Balcon de Europa
by Carmela71
The heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcón de Europa, a great promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, once the site of a Moorish castle.
Wonderfull panoramic views of the Mediterranean (see travelogue) and the small coves and beaches below, against an awesome backdrop of hazy blue mountains.
Factory 'San Miguel'
by nettyfitz
This is part of the ruined building of the Sugar Factor. Mr Miguel Sanchez bought this on land purchased from Larios. He died in 1869 and the building reverted back to Larios.
The sugar factory ruin is quite near to the Coaching tapas bar.
Orange Square al fresco. (Plaza Canterero)
by Pauldelabar about Bar Canterero : Prop. - Scott.
Spanish Ice creamery/Bar.
Bar Canterero is situated beneath the Hostal Canterero in Orange Square, or to give it its proper name, Plaza Canterero.
The bar itself is clean and new but quite small inside, however, Scott, the bar owner, who is Spanish/English and speaks both languages fluently, has comfortable tables and chairs across the road and actually in the pergola surrounded square which has a large fountain at its centre. The fountain automatically switches itself off at 3pm for Siesta purposes but the bar is open until late evening.
A fantastic place for a drink or an ice cream in the sun. Parasols are provided to keep the hottest sun off and over €1000 worth of ice cream varieties are stocked.
Price range:
Very good value for money. Cheaper than most with 'al fresco' tables.
Atmosphere:
Being as most tables are outside. Take company with you. However Scott the owner is a great person to talk to if for any reason you are stuck inside the small bar.
Theme:
Inside clean and bright. No real theme. Outside you are amongst orange blossomed pergolas and in the centre there is a spectacular fountain which shuts itself off at 3pm for siesta reasons. (for people not the fountain !).
Opening hours:
Closed Mondays and exceedingly bad weather.
Disabled notes:
Level access. But althought the toilet has been fitted with wheelchair bars etc., it is too small to manouvre a chair around. As you please.
Spanish flavour at El Nino
by Pauldelabar about El Nino
Spanish Restaurant
I cannot comment on the food here as I only popped in for a drink. But every night (winter) the restaurant seemed very busy. You get a propper Spanish flavour at this place with the hams hanging up (and not just for show). The decor is very Adalucian. and very comfortable looking.
Beer here is Alhambra - Very nice. As I say, I only popped in for a drink but a very nice few glasses of Alhambra beer was consumed.
Disabled notes:
Steps inside. Not good for wheelchairs.
Go to the Fair

Most of our visits to Nerja were in February or March and on several occasions we were there for the Fiesta held usually on the weekend before Ash Wednesday.
It was always great fun and.although obviously managed and overseen somehow, it had an air of spontaneous organised chaos.
It was lovely to walk around in the carnival atmosphere that gripped the town centre in absolute safety; small children played freely and we never saw any drunkeness or anti-social behaviour.
We have not seen been there at the right time for several years so I only have reports that it has become a much bigger, more orgainsed event in recent years.
