Places simlar to Nerja

by annaandsie

Hi, We have been to Nerja for the last 3 years ( 5 times in total ) with our 2 young children and Love it but it is time for a change. Any advice on simlar ( quiet with a good restaraunt or 2 ) places along the coast ?

Difficult to answer. I am sure that there may be some nice places further east along the Costa Tropical. But have not yet visited.
However I have been to the Costa de la Luz and there are some good sandy clean Atlantic (not Med) beaches west of Gibraltar. CONIL is one popular town in summer with a huge beach and more activity in the town than most.
Another town that is very popular with Spanish & English is CHICLANA and hte seaside called NOVO SANCTI PETRI. Barrosa beach is again awesome.

Go further along the coast in the direction of Almeria. Just passed Motril you'll come to Calahona and even smaller is Castelle de Faro. Really good beaches, fish restaurants - Spaniards holiday here. I really enjoyed last August lazing about here...of course there's always Salobrena too.

I live in Cadiz on the Costa del Luz - crazy busy here in high season, no space on the beach - the accomodation prices go OTT too.

Messing about with boats at marina del Este

by ranger49

Stay on the coast road going east from Nerja until you see a sign for Marina del Este then take it!
If you like to mess about with boats or enjoy watching other people do so the short winding road to Marina del Este will be a good one for you. You will see on the way down lots of smart looking villas before you come to the Marina.

This is a man made harbour without any of the charm of, for example, Lymington on the south coast of England or any other sea port and harbour that has grown over centuries.
It is a beautiful location close to the Punta de la Mona with the Penon de las Caballas (mackerel) as a backdrop, but everything is new.
The "arcaded" harbour boutiques and restaurants seem to be waiting for tourists and, out of season, most of the local, new or newish, properties are shuttered, closed up.
But it makes an interesting littledeour, gives an insight into the world of people with money to spend sailing aroun the Med in winter - and you can get a passable cup of coffee and lunch there.

The Commy bar. (Calle Alejandro Bueno)

by Pauldelabar about Los Bilbainos

Spanish Tapas Bar.
Los Bilbainos is otherwise known amongst the English here as the 'Commy Bar' due to the picture of 'Che' over the clock. This bar is very traditional Spanish. Low prices and a tapa are the rule here.

The bar has 2 tables outside but the views are a bit limited and only limited sunshine gets to this narrow street. You may need to speak a little Spanish (Andalus) here. The beer is good and the wine reasonable.

Price range:
Excellent value for money and includes 'Tapas'.
Very good.
Old time Spanish which really works.
Opening times:
Lunchtimes and evenings.
Disabled notes:
One step up from the narrow pavement. Casual.

You may want to look the street up on the map in the Nerja Essential (Website link below) Grid ref. E6.

Fish &Chips at The Codfather.

by Pauldelabar about The Codfather

English Fish & Chip Bar
Civilised isn't it ? Why can't they do one of these here in England ? A fish and chip restaurant with a drinks bar. Heaven !
There is terraz outside at the rear and usually tables outside at the front as well as facilities inside.

Opening times:
Closed on Sunday evenings and all day Mondays. All good.

Disabled notes:
Level access.

Scuba diving with Barny

by stickynickyuk

You have to go scuba diving if you visit any warm country ~ Id previously been diving and lucky enough to have be trained as a child by my step/dad as he was an instructor~
But going with Barny was such great fun

Not only is he down to earth but he will give you and your friends and family what it is you want from your experience~~
being it a daytime dive
or nightime for more experienced divers
you really cant miss out on this great adventure it is after all
Another world under there

me and Gee did a few dives one of which was on the beach of Playa de Cantarrijan
this was a beautiful nudist beach not for all ~~ Smiles ~~A lovely beach with some excellent bars and taverns. A lively setting with a variety of music. It is reached via a very precarious cliff track (wide enough for one car) desending at a very steep rate - not for the nervous.
I didnt like it at all but it was worth it ~~ when you got down to the beach ~~
It is used as the base for one of Scubanerja's dive sites - a very beautiful setting

The marine life includes octopus, conger, moray, lobster, grouper, weaverfish moonfish, dasmil, wrasse, scorpion fish, salifish, swordfish, dolphin, silverfish, nudibranchis, flowers, faunas and corals.
