Nightmare in Seville
by Kashpir about Casa Sol y Luna
We stayed in Casa Sol y Luna in October 2006 (3 nights) and it was a terrible experience. We were given a small room without a real window - the only window was directed to the covered patio. The bed sheets were not very clean and the room did not have any kind of ventilator - you can rent a small fan for an additional 3 euros per day (even in October it was quite hot as the temperature were over 30 degrees Celsius). Parking a car near the pension is not allowed, the only way is to find a place on one of the plazas nearby - which is mission impossible - or pay for the underground parking (up from 18 euro per day). The only good thing about this pension was the clean common bathroom. We paid 38 euro for the double room and it is not worth it. I do not recommend it.

In our search for accommodations in Spain during the Christmas period, we stumbled across this very nicely landscaped B&B in early November 2008, initially booking the nights of Dec. 24 and 25th. As our plans changed due to flight cancellations from England brought on by the world financial crisis, we were able to book at third night a few weeks later without any problems. Casa Sol y Luna is located outside Estepona and is quite difficult to find without detailed instructions, which the owners forwarded to us!
This is a beautifully built and maintained house, located on a hillside with a beautiful view of the countryside below leading toward the Mediterranean Sea. The main feature of this B&B is its very picturesque outdoor pool as well as the immaculately maintained grounds of various flowers, shrubs and trees of all sorts. Of the three bedrooms in the house, one 1st floor room is used by the owners with, in our case, the second available for Sue's sister. Sue and I had the only ground floor bedroom, with access to both the living/dining room and the outdoor swimming pool. The off-season room rate was 45 Euros per room/night in cash plus an additional 5 Euros for breakfast if you wish. We enjoyed our room - it was really quiet without nearby neighbours and, if we felt like it, we could walk out our patio doors and fall right into their swimming pool! The bed itself was very comfortable but, being a hot-blooded guy, I found the double duvet a bit warm for my tastes - still I survived somehow.
The room had a small adjoining bathroom with a modern shower, toilet and sink arrangement that worked just fine. Another door opened into the living room where they had a fireplace and we also watched a CD movie on their TV on Christmas Eve. The breakfast table and refrigerator are located at the far end of the living room with a small bar providing access to food being prepared in the adjoining kitchen.
We enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere so much, that we made just lazing around the pool our major activity on one of our few off-days from travelling - this was just too good to pass up. Our young hosts from Belgium and The Netherlands were very helpful, providing us with small cakes in pottery bowls as a gift on on one of our evenings there. They also were very helpful in the weeks leading up to the trip as I emailed them with various questions on road conditions at that time of year. Iris and Hadelin were having a glitch with their banking accounts when I booked the rooms but, after brief email correspondence, they just said forget about sending an advance and simply pay when we arrive!
This B&B should be a 'tourist attraction'!

After our brief exploration of Cadiz, we took the inland route over the mountains to reach the Mediterranean coast near Gibraltar, but continued eastward to our next accommodations (a B&B called Casa Sol y Luna), where we had booked three nights - including Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. It was on Boxing Day that we finally decided to just sit tight for once and enjoy where we were on such a beautiful day amidst great surroundings! Because the sun was shining, after returning from our morning beach excursion in Estepona, we decided to simply sit back and enjoy the amazing ambiance of our B&B.
It was great to take a day off from driving to enjoy a beer or two in the sunshine while enjoying the visual pleasure of this swimming pool area, while reading a book! The owners kept a supply of cold San Miguel beers in our breakfast refrigerator so I helped myself to a few (he said they were free but I just had to give him a few Euros for having them so handy). We also enjoyed some chips and our usual sandwiches while relaxing. Despite the mid-teen C temperatures, the water was still holding at a much lower temperature if one was brave enough to actually dip their feet in for a brief time.
With the owners away for the day, we had the place to ourselves - no other guests. Frankly, I could get used to this life, especially after seeing on the internet that it was approaching -50 C back in Regina, Canada! One of our most enjoyable days in Spain. Take a look at my Accommodations tips for a more detailed description of our stay - it was one of the best experiences of our entire trip.

Hello,
If you are looking for a nice and central accomodation try in Marco Polo´s House. You can let a good studio-room in the attic floor by 36 euros/day, with a big terrace, barbecue, refrigerator..., close to Alameda de Hercules, night-life and restaurants zone and five minutes walking to the commercial district (Campana-Duque).

Perhaps I'm replying a little late, but Plaza Encarnacion is VERY near the center, more so than the Alameda. Don't personally know a lot about Casa Sol Y Luna but it does look nice. Everything is VERY close by from there.
Cheap & cheerful hostals in mid-May
by bruceecurb
Hello,
I'm travelling to Seville with four friends from 17-22 May and we're looking for a cheap and cheerful hostal. In the course of my research I've found a number of places that look quite good, such as the Hostal Redes, the Hostal Santa Catalina and the Hostal Gravina, and I was wondering if anyone knows these places, or others, that cost under 30 euros per night per person, are located in the centre of town and are welcoming to five male, moderately-civilised, Spanish-speaking tourists.
Many thanks for any help,
Bruce

Hi,
two weeks ago i stayed 4 nights at Hostal San Benito in el barrio santa cruz. If you don't need a private bathroom an you are really on a budget it could be a choice. I paid 20 Euro for a single room. But don't expect too much. It was clean, friendly owners, in the middle of the the historic center and that's it.
They have a website : http://www.hostalsanbenito.com/index.htm
Sevilla is wonderful, enjoy your trip.

I don't know any of the hostals you've seen. However, i know a hostal in Barrio de Santa Cruz, close to the Alcalzar which is beautiful and clean. I was there in 2001 and it's wonderful.I think the price now is:
20 Euros-single-bath outside.
40 Euros-Double-bath outside.
50 Euros-Double-with bath.

i don't think you have many problems to reserve(difficult in Easter and Feria de Abril) but i think that is better to reserve before any hostel or hotel you decide!
have fun,
eva

A couple of months ago I spent a week at the Casa Sol y Luna by the main sites of interest. Great place, good people and well located. Have a look, they are listed in most of the hostel directories....and...they have a comprehensive website at www.casasolyluna1.com. Good luck and enjoy Seville...it's just wonderful!
Restaurants near hotel
by thuyronald
Hello,
I'm coming to Seville in mid April and wanted to get some tips on restaurants near my hotel. I'll be staying at the Hostal Casa Sol y Luna on Calle Perez Galdos, near the Plaza De La Encarnacion & the Plaza Alfalfa area.
Can anyone suggest any budget restaurants or tapa bars in this area? Also, any good one offering tasty paella.
Thanks for any help on this subject.

Sevilla is only small so you won't have a problem walking to most areas from where your hotel is.
Alfalfa is a good bar area, night time, maybe not so much restaurant like though (well there is a good pizza place!). Not far off though, at Salvador Square there are several cute (some tapas, some only drinks) bars (standing room type) which are fun and then there is a tapas bar with chairs in the corner too (sorry the name escapes me).
Finding tapas bars/budget restaurants won't be a problem, there are loads of tapas bars in Sevilla; the cheapest (and often the best) ones will be the ones that have standing room only and is packed with locals and tourists alike :)
Avoid the restaurants boardering the Cathedral though, they really do overcharge you. You really are with in walking distance to Santa Cruz and the road Mateus Gago has about five tapas bars, my personal favourite being "Las Columnas" which has the best atmosphere and great tapas (and cheap!).
Not sure about a good place for paella though, sorry!
Enjoy your visit,
Anna
