Sevilla vs. Bilbao

by thelittleteapot

I'd like to study abroad in Spain for Spring 2010. I've narrowed it down to Bilbao or Sevilla. What are your opinions for pros and cons on both? Weather? Culture? Transportation? Student/night life? Food? Safety? Costs?

In Bilbao, I'd be studying at Universidad de Deusto. In Sevilla, it would be either Universidad Pablo de Olavide or Menendez Pelayo International University.

I like Sevilla because it feels more romantic and "Spanish". There's also the famous Spring festivals.

I like Bilbao because it's a smaller city/program, has great public transportation, and a better university.

Thanks for your input!

Really personal decision, but I would opt for Bilbo, but only because it is on the coast of the Bay of Biscay and close to the Pyrenees.

You are right about Seville feeling more romantic, but I'd still take the ocean.

i think that if you want something more authentic, go to bilbao. there are tons of american students in sevilla.

there is good nightlife everywhere in spain. and in bilbao you're also close to san sebastian and those beaches.

If the major object is to study, isn't the better university the deciding factor?

if the university in Bilbao is better, go for it

and the plus of Bilbao is you will experience something different than the stereotypical Spanish postcard

Sevilla Sevilla Sevilla!

I studied flamenco dance and Spanish in Sevilla for 2.5 months in 2007 and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Especially in springtime when all the good events and festivals happen - Holy Week, Feria de Abril, Romeria del Rocio, etc.

Travel Tips for Sevilla

Sevilla is one of the most...

Sevilla is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen. The buildings have been impeccably maintained and there are gardens, trees and flowers everywhere. This city will take at least a few days to fully appreciate. As with anywhere you go in Spain, you are better off learning some Spanish before you go because there are not a lot of people who are willing to speak English.

"Seville, is a pleasant city, famous for oranges and women."
Byron

"The air soft as that of Seville in April, and so fragrant that it was delicious to breathe it. "
Christopher Columbus

"The city is as large as Seville or Cordova; its streets, I speak of the principal ones, are very wide and straight; some of these, and all the inferior ones, are half land and half water, and are navigated by canoes. "
Hernando Cortes

"There are fully forty towers, which are lofty and well built, the largest of which has fifty steps leading to its main body, and is higher than the tower of the principal tower of the church at Seville. "

Sevilla tours

This buses sometimes are a good option if you do not have much time to spend walking around, or it is raining or it is too hot.

We did not do it, as we walked all sevilla around, getting lost (on purposse) in all the little streets and walking all over the places we could manage, but the itinerary of these buses is veery complete, so if short of time, I recomend them

Ancient Rome and olive oil

by puerto_lover

Going up to Italica gives some extra historical perspective. this was the large town that Trajan and Hadrian knew so well. From this outer part of the Roman Empire vast quantities of olive oil were transported back to Rome in clay vessels - the amphorae - across the Mediterranean. Vast fortunes were made by those who controlled this entire process. In Rome there is a hill formed of millions of discarded broken amphorae, most of them would have originated from here or hereabouts. It's called Monte Testaccio.
Trajan was born here in September 53 A.D. he would rise to fame in battles and be crowned Emperor in 98 A.D. His travels took him all over the Empire including modern day Iraq which was now to become the latest province of the Roman Empire. However the peoples of Mesopotamia were not easy to subdue and Trajan's last days were soon to come as he returned to Italy and died in modern day southern Turkey. His chosen successor Hadrian then became Emperor in 117 A.D. and he too had his roots and family very much in Italica and the Roman Baetica Province.
