Wine tasting

by Susumarie

Looking for a nice wine tour -- had an excellent trip in Melbourne that took multiple sign ups (instead of a private tour)in one big van to different wineries (had the sweetest, most rib-tickling driver, especially on the trip home! :). Everything I see in Spain seems to center on "private" tours. Any help finding a more "assorted" group (and more reasonably priced) tour? Either Madrid, Sevilla or Barcelona?

You might be able to find wine tasting. The closest area to Sevilla will be Montilla/Moriles DO. Generally you will have to go further North for more conventional wine tasting, i.e. the Marquez Riscal near the Basque area. I had some excellent Ribiera del Duero while in Sevilla, but couldn't tell you exactly where they were from. Try http://www.winesfromspain.com/icex/cda/controller/pageGen/0,3346,1549487_4946338_4944445_1083_-1,00.html,

Unforunately there are no major wine growing establishments near to Seville so a wine tour like the one you describe is really best by trying the bars and especially the better tapas bars in Seville.

Possibly the closest area for serious wine growing to Seville is Sherry country. I don't know if you are familiar with sherry but there are many types, from the super dry to the extra sweet, and by visiting JEREZ its possible to explore the sherry area. These are 'fortified' wines. Jerez is about one hour by train south of Seville on the way to Cadiz. Tours in sherry land is really limited to individual Bodegas (wine cellar or rather large storage warehouse for casks of wine) such as the popular one run by Tio Pepe : http://www.bodegastiopepe.com/
But there are many others in Jerez and also in El Puerto de Santa Maria - especially OSBORNE http://www.osborne.es/

Spanish wines are very good these days. The reds or 'tintos' used to be mainly made from the Tempranillo grape but nowadays you have more grape varieties and blends. The ageing process in barrels also gives wine in Spain that distinctive flavour especially the Riojas.

Travel Tips for Sevilla

Sshhhh It's a secret

by deeper_blue

Andalucia is very hush hush where Britain is concerned. A lot of British holiday makers make their way to resorts on the Costa Del Sol, and miss out on these beautiful area.
What a shame, although there probably isn't enough nightlife for them.
Madrid apparantly is great for nightlife.

Sevilla-history (cont)

From 712 Seville is under authority of arabs and refers to Ishibilia. In 1030 Seville became the capital of the Arabian state. The palace and a huge mosque is under construction there. In 1248 after two-year-old siege Ferdinand III released city from the authority of arabs. He moved 24 thousand of castilians there.

Seville is much more...

Seville is a very old city, even before from the roman culture. During this time Seville was known as Hispalis, name that continue in use in many enviroment, like the University, many times referes as "La Universidad Hispalense". Seville is also one of the most traditional and classical cities of Spain. Most of the topics of Spain come from Seville or Andalusia.
But Seville is of course, as a big city, a city of changes and negocies and in the last time intercultural people. Shops of any fashion can be found in Seville and many big comercial centers are found. To relax, to leave or to visit, Seville is a very nice city.

Carmen's walks

by Carmela71

I missed this when i visited Sevilla, but I may do it during this year, if I go for a day trip, I can not recomend as I did not do it myslef, but I added here as I find it interesting.

the walks are held from March to October, except in july and august, and if it rains. There is no standard price, you give what you want.

An actrisse featuring Carmen of the Bizet opera will show you all the palces related with her history, the tobacco factory where her story really starts, the Arenal disctrict, the bullring passing the Alcazar Palace, etc. Also hsitories about her friend Don juan lol

The walk ends near the border of the Guadalquivir river where Carmen was killed by her lover and where she also reveals why her spirit never really died.

Duration is 90 minutes.

Days to enjoy it Monday, Wensdays, friday and saturdays at 18.00 h. (6 PM) on the corner of Calle Sto. Thomýs and Calle Miguel Maýara
