More of Seville or visit Carmona?

by GingSaldajeno

I will be in Seville for 2 whole days in October and plan to follow a pretty comprehensive walking tour of the Old City in Seville on the first day. In the evening, I plan to watch a flamenco show. On the second day I was wondering if I should revisit some of the places in the old city or is a side trip to Carmona worthwhile?

Re: More of Seville or visit Carmona?

It depends completely on your tastes.

Sevilla is a very big city, with ancient history. Spectacular monuments, amazing old quarter, cathedrals, churches, museums....many people visit the city time after time, and they don´t get tired of it...

October is not highseason, so you maybe you can wait and decide right in the last minute. If you have had enough with the tour, you book the excursion. If not, you stay in the city.

I agree. I go to Seville and never tire of the city - always something of interest. But may depend on the weather or the places covered during your walking tour or indeed the day of the week because some places may be closed for example shops on a Sunday ! Wait until you get to Seville. By the way you can take a bus to Carmona from Prado de San Sebastian - Avenida Portugal - using CASAL.

I spent a week in Seville and it wasn't enough! A comprehensive walking tour is a great intro, but you want also to go into some of the sites and for that you will need more time. The Alcazar alone is a good 2 - 3 hours for a comprehensive visit. Don't skip the Seville Cathedral, it is magnificent.

To see detailed itineraries and ideas of what to see, click on the name of any one of the people that have answered you here and you will be taken to their home page. From there you can click on Seville to read about their own personal experiences in the city. Also you can put the word: Seville into the Search box on the upper right of any VT page and get a lot more personal details from others that have visited or live there.

For a great - and unusual - flamenco show I can highly recommend the Casa de Memoirs:

Have fun!

MUDEJAR ARCHITECTURE

by LoriPori

Ok, so I keep seeing references made to MUDEJAR ARCHITECTURE. What exactly is it? Developed in the 12th century and influenced by Islamic traditions, MUDEJAR reflects various contemporary European styles, particularly the Moorish. Primarily used up until the early 17th century, it is characterized by an extremely refined and inventive use of brick and glazed tiles in architecture, especially in the belfries.
For more information you can check out the website www.arteguias.com/mudejar.htm Also pictured here is the Alcazaba in Malaga, also in Mudejar style architecture.

Plaza de España.

by A2002

I love this place best in Sevilla. We had a short tour on the horse carriages around the Plaza de España, Parque de María Luisa, and Plaza de América. It was a romantic experience. :-)
Oh yes, there's a scene in Star Wars Episode 2 being shot here! No wonder the place looks familiar when I was watching the movie......

LA FERIA DE ABRIL

by Fen

The April Fair in Seville is very famous. People come from all over Spain to celebrate it. It started during the XIXth century as a market for buying and selling animals.
For a week, the streets in the Fair ground are covered in golden sand and there are paper globes everywhere.
On both sides of the street there are attractive canvas tents which belong to a family, company or club.
The women dress up in the typical flamenco dresses and dance sevillanas. The men dress in riding outfits and ride on horses. During the ride it is common to stop at someone’s caseta to have a drink and something to eat.
Other people promenade in a horse and carriage and the whole family participate.
At night time, the main gate of the Fair gets illuminated and the people spend the night with friends singing, dancing, drinking and eating until the early hours.

Olympic Stadium - Estadio Olímpico

by spanishguy

Why there is an Olympic Stadium in Seville? It could be the question that anybody could have thinking that Seville never hosted a Olympic Game. This huge stadium was built in 1999 because the town tried to be an olympic city for 2004, 2008 and 2012 games. Finally, Seville has decline to pretend the Olympic games any more after three IOC refusal and the Madrid candidature. At least the stadium hosted the Athletics World Championships in 1999 and the Davis Cup final in 2004 between Spain and the United States... and we won!

¡y ganamos nosotros!
