Old Jewish Quarter
by beehive273
I am thinking about taking a ship's tour of Seville in April. In the old Jewish Quarter are there any places to buy Jewish souvenirs or is the area just named for the past history? Thanks for any clues you can give me.

Mostly it is just the name - that area called Santa Cruz or the Juderia. There are some nice walking tours of that area, but it is not like in Barcelona or Cordoba where they have discovered 14th C synagogues and restored them.
Went on a good walking tour of the area with a lovely lady called Concepcion. The tour group met at Plaza Nueva. It was was informative and interesting.
We walked all around the Cathedral, up and down some of the streets in the Santa Cruz Jewish area and had entertaining explanations.
Cost was Euro 12 pp for a two hour tour in September 2009.

Depending on what time you have to be back at the ship you might want to visit the Casa de la Memoria Al-Andalus situated in an old Jewish home. Today it is a cultural centre connected with the Casa de Sefarad in Cordoba. Every evening there is a show in a cozy, intimate patio (open in the summer) beautifully decorated in the old style.

Travel Tips for Sevilla
Strolling around Casa Pilatos
by agarcia
The garden of Casa Pilatos earned an especial place among my memories from Sevilla, something remarkable if you take into account the fascinating collection of romantic spots that the city treasures. The beautiful configuration of the garden, the lively colors, the fragrance and freshness of its patios and fountains. An authentic jewel for the senses, indeed.
Artistic Sevilla
by acemj
This Diego Velasquez statue in Barrio Santa Cruz, exemplifies Sevilla's proud artistic tradition. In addition to Velasquez, the painter Murillo was also a native of Sevilla. The poets Antonio Machado and Gustavo Adolfo Becquer were born here and arguably the most famous hero in the world of literature, Cervantes's Don Quijote, started his adventures from Sevilla. Molina's seductive Don Juan did much of his wooing here and Rossin's Figaro, that famous barber of Sevilla, was set in the Barrio Santa Cruz. And, of course, Bizet's most famous heroine, Carmen met Don Jose in Sevilla.
Azulejos
by tompt
Azulejos are glazed tiles in lovely colors. They are strong, cool in summer and for those reason everywhere in Seville. The art of making them is brought to Spain by the Moors. The word azulejos comes from the Arab word az-zulayj (stone). Origianlly it was used to make colorfull mosaics with little stones of one color. The colors the Moors used were blue, green, black, white and ochre.
Later the art of glazing was further developped and the tiles had several colors in one tile and even entire pictures were glazed on a tile.
The tiles in the pictures are on a balustrade in front of the Plaza de Espana. Here you can find some great examples of the azulejos. More pictures can be found in our Plaza de Espagna travelogue.
Feria Gateway - Portada de Feria
by spanishguy
It's a huge structure representing each year one of the city’s monuments. It's the entrance point into the fair and traditionally the meeting point for visitors. In the end it becomes one of the most difficult places to meet anyone.
Esta gran estructura representa todos los años uno de los monumentos de la ciudad. Es el pricipal lugar de entrada a la Feria y tradicionalmente es el punto de encuentro. En realidad es uno de los lugares donde resulta más dificil encontrar a alguien al final.
