Various outdoor entertainment in the center.
by Regina1965
There are a lot of activities at night in the center of town so it is best to get an agenda of various events each month at the Information centers so you don´t miss out on these events.
The dance at Plaza Ríu Mesa is called Baile Andaluz, The Ballet Flamenco at Plaza "Pablo Ruiz Picasso" is performed by Grupo de Baile de: "José Lucena" and the performers at Plaza de la Independencia both danced Flamenco and sang. At Plaza de la Independencia at another time there was also a theater for kids and on Plaza de la Nogalera there was a fantastic English opera singer.
Día del Turista - The day of the tourist.
by Regina1965
"Día del Turista" or The day of the tourist was held this year for the 21st time in Torremolinos. It is held in honour of the hundreds of thousands of tourists visiting Torremolinos each year. Unfortunatly I missed this event only by few hours and the photos show what it looked like after the festivities. I add this tip here so that you will not miss it like I did. It is held on the first Thursday in September. It starts at 10 with a parade through local streets led by the Musical Marching Band and girls in traditional costumes offer flower to people. Then at 13 there is music and dancing and complimentary paella (a big one), sangria, Malaga wines and soft drinks on the beach and Paseo Marítimo in front of Hotel Melia in Bajondillo and at another location in La Carihuela-Montemar and Playamar. There is also celebration and paella and street entertainers at La Plaza Jesus Santos Rein - La Nogalera in the center of town of Torremolinos
Then later on there is a bull-fight at the bullring.
Remember to get your latest issue of the agenda of the month at the Informacion centers so you don´t miss this one like I did.
The train from Malaga to Fuengirola - Renfe.
by Regina1965
There is a train running from Malaga to Fuengirola every half an hour. Fuengirola is the final station and from there the train returns back to Malaga. It is a cheap and fast way to travel. I used this train a lot as I love Fuengirola. The train is modern, clean and there is a security guard on-board so you feel very safe. There were incidents some time ago of people being robbed on the train, thus the security guard on-board.
The trip from Torremolinos to Fuengirola lasts ca 15-20 minutes and a return ticket costs 3,20 euros (2010). One way costs 1,55 euros so it is strange really that a return ticket (ida i regres) costs a little more?
The trip from Torremolinos to Malaga lasts longer, ca 25 minutes as it goes first to the airport. A return ticket costs 2.05 euros (2009).
The train station is situated on Avenida Jesús Santos Rein on Plaza de la Nogalera.
You can get a train timetable at the Information centers in Malaga and Fuengirola, but not in Torremolinos. You might be able to get the timetable at the train station in Torremolinos though.
The city center in Torremolinos.
by Regina1965
The city center in Torremolinos is lovely, even though some say it is too small and that it lacks big shopping malls. For me it is just the right size and has got a lot of charm, one can always go to Malaga for the shopping malls or visit the big shopping-center in La Canada in Marbella for that.
The main shopping-street is Calle San Miguel which is in the very city center, surrounded by squares with beautiful fountains and statues. There are so many interesting streets and alleys off Calle San Miguel with Chinese shops, boutiques and restaurants. There is also a Mercadona supermarket right there off Calle San Miguel on Plaza Costa del Sol (see a photo under my tip on shopping). There are other supermarkets further up in Torremolinos, including a big Super Sol. Further up there is also a small "China Town" with a Chinese supermarket and smaller Chinese food-stores. I go there regularily and especially like Super Oriental Wen in Calle Rio Alba, which has got good prices on Oriental food.
The Bus Terminal is in Calla Hoya, we had troubles finding it when first visiting Torremolinos. From there you can catch a bus to f.ex. Malaga. To get to the Terminal walk to the end of Calle San Miguel, turn right and pass Plaza Costa del Sol. Calla Hoya is joined to Plaza Costa del Sol, walk for a couple of minutes and there is the Terminal and residential properties and blocks-of-flats with a lot of immigrants.
There is a gay-area in the city center by La Nogalera with drag-shows and discos, and the gay scene in Torremolinos is lively. In Calla Casablanca there is a good gay- and straight-scene and a disco called Eugenio's, I have been there a couple of times and it is verly lively for all generations (above 20 i.e.). Across the street from Eugenio's is Gussi Bar, the Icelandic bar.
So all in all the center is very lovely and diverse.
Best tapas in town
by randstad about El Gato
One of the oldest restaurants in Torremolinos hidden in a sidewalk of Nogalera just 200 meters from busy calle San Miguel. Serving fresh tapas traditional style and poular with both locals and tourists. Pinchitos is a local specialty of grilled chicken kebab in sour sauce. Another good one is gaspacho: cold tomato soup as eaten for centuries here in Andalusia.
