    HOTEL / APARTAMENTOS

    by

    February 5, 6 & 7, 1996
As Hans and I were vacationing in Portugal, we wanted to visit the Costa del Sol for a few days. We decided upon Torremolinos, as Hans remembered it as being a wonderful beach town. We looked around for accommodations and decided upon the HOTEL PALOMAS which was situated 200 metres from the beach in the lovely part of Carhuela.

Unique Quality: The Palomas complex, which consist of the hotel and apartments, is located 10 minutes from the centre of Torremolinos. The Hotel has 303 rooms with full bathroom, and the majority of them have a terrace. The 46 apartments also have a lounge, refrigerator and kitchenette.
The complex has 2 adult swimming pools , one of which has a section for children and the other one is heated.
Lounge, TV and games room, conference room and Sauna.

    Close to the beach

The hotel Las Palomas is an excellent holiday hotel. Not far from the beach and not far from the city center.

Unique Quality: It has two swimming pools a nice garden and it offers you during the day and nighttime an entertainment programme.

Three of us (males) arrived at the hotel in blistering heat of 38C. Upon our arrival at the reception desk we were greeted by three scowling Spanish receptionists. "Name?" was the greeting that we received. Following this we were given our room key and room number and proceeded to go to our room.

Upon arrival in our room we noticed that there was only one double bed in the room and there were three of us!!! Chris headed to reception to try and sort it out and their solution was to give us a camping bed, which for all purposes was fine but three beds in a small room at temperatures of 38C was not comfortable.

We then proceeded to inspect the bathroom and furnishings. The toilet bowl had last nights evening meal splattered up the sides of it and the smell, well.... it can only be described as stomach churning.

Later that day we went to dine in the restaurant. We were shown to our table by another scowling waiter dressed in a hideous haiwian shirt. "Ticket???" was the cry- we weren't told that we needed our room card to get a meal. "Bring it next time". We sat down and ordered our drinks and then went to the buffet. The choice of food was limited to say the least. The vegetables were swimming in vegetable oil and the dessert ice cream was melting in the heat. After we finished the meal we left to go back to our room when we were chased across the hotel reception by the restaurant manager "Hey English Pigs- You not pay for drinks!" We thought that our drinks were added to our room bill- again something else that hadn't been explained at check in.

As the week went on we noticed more and more problems:

1. The evening meals became inedible and on Wednesday I developed chronic diahorrea. The bedroom was stinking for 24 hours.

2. The swimming pool had a scum mark around the edge.

3. They cut our Pay TV off before it was due to run out.

4.Lee developed a horrible rash from the bed sheets.

5. We woke up on Fridaymorning to find toilet roll floating in the swimming pool.

All in all I wouldn't recommend anyone go to this Holiday Hell Hole.

The best little bar/cafe on the Costa del Sol

by aroundtheworld123 about The Mermaid Bar - La Carihuela

A great little bar on the way to the beach from the Hotel Las Palomas in La Carihuela Torremolinos, in Calle Carmen Montes.
The bar is run by British couple, Jacqui and Michael, with their delightful little dog Millie always around for the cutie factor.
We were impressed at the quality and choice of hearty British and International food on offer, at the most reasonable prices. Food is served from 10 am until closing at 3 am.
The fun and friendly atmosphere in comfortable, relaxed surroundings, make this a a great place to eat and drink.
Not feeling hungry? then simply sit and relax on the terrace. Drinks are fantastic value for money with good size measures, and a range of humerous cocktails that will keep you laughing into the early hours.
All Day Big English breakfasts incl. tea and coffee start from 3.00 euros. There is a full menu of starters, main courses and desserts, including Michaels homemade specials that included Spaghetti bolognese, chilli con carne, lasagna, Liver in Malaga wine and A variety of curries cooked to order. The freshly prepared salads are also magnificent.
Simply a great place to eat, drink and be merry! My favourite dish has to be the Jacket potatoes, with a choice of fillings delighted my taste buds whatever I chose. I recommend the Chicken and crispy bacon in mayonaise, with fresh, crispy salad garnish. they are the fluffiest, most delicious jacket spuds I have ever tasted, washed down with a huge glass of iced cold homemade sangria - yum!
When I required a more substancial meal the Gammon or Entrecote steak, or Surf and Turf platter with chunky chips and a choice of sauces, served with mushrooms, griddled pineapple and onion rings, was the best in town.

Priego de Córdoba Arrival

by 36waterfalls

Flying in from Amsterdam, we arrive at Malaga airport early in the afternoon.
The rented van with chauffeur is waiting to take us west to our first hotel on this trip; at Priego de Córdoba.
My first impression is that of a dry, rocky landscape. But it's growing more lush when driving away from the coast. Hills appear, covered in olive trees. From a distance they look like a neat pattern of little dots, the pattern Andalucia is famous for.
Spain produces 60% of the global amount of olive oil, of which Andalucia takes up another 60%.
We stop for lunch along the road, where the locals only speak Spanish and we have a good laugh trying to figure out what food to order.
Well, I'm still here, so I díd eat eh!
It's late afternoon when we arrive at Hotel Huerta de las Palomas at Priego (see hotel tips).
Still on time to freshen up, since dinner here won't be until 20.30!

We had a great time here!

by A TripAdvisor Member

We too had booked a last minute deal via Direct Holidays and were placed in this hotel. Our trip was in last week in June into the first week of July 2004. To be honest, I had read the reviews about this hotel here before we left for our holiday and was a little worried. But worry I needn't have!

This was a family holiday for myself, wife and our 11 year old son.

The Hotel was clean, the rooms were particularly spotless, maintained by the friendly staff every day. We had a pool side room and a pleasant (part) view of the ocean. The location of the hotel was very good, the only criticism was that it's on a slight incline which can be a little hard going when coming back for our siesta, the temperature races up to 37 degrees, but generally good all round location.
We had read (on this site) that the food was nothing to write home about.... but we're not sure what the other reviewers are on about - we thought it was very good. The breakfasts were ok, but the evening meals were excellent. The choice was very good, and the help yourself buffet was welcomed by our son who could choose a bit of everything!! He loved the fish, incidentally.
The hotel has nightly 'entertainment'. It's mainly the Hotel entertainment man and woman (they were at poolsode thru the day too, trying to get the guests involved in various activities) and the nightly bingo seemed particularly popular with the children. There was also a Magic Night and a Flamenco Dance Night. Nothing outstanding, but everyone seemed to enjoy it, and again the children were well catered for.
All in all, we really liked it. The only real negative thing I can say about this hotel is that our room didn't have air conditioning. And the room was very hot at night.
However, we had a great time. The staff were friendly (except the restaurant staff for some reason!) and the rooms were spacious and clean and well serviced - it's just a pity about the lack of air conditioning.
So, anyone off to Hotel Las Palomas, this summer at any rate (Summer 2004), have little to worry about. We had a great holiday!

Think twice

Just back from this supposedly 3* hotel. What a joke. I have been going abroad for 20 years and have never came across a more run down and dated place in my life. Reception staff on arrival couldn't care less, neither could the dining room staff and bar staff. The nicest people there were the room maids who kept the rooms spotless. No air con,no kettle in room, which you would expect from a 3* and very, very noisy at night. The pool area is the dirtiest i have ever seen in a hotel and the few sun loungers that they have need a good wash. Food was not up to much, very under cooked and dirty cutlery.
However, this hotel is in a great location, right in the heart of things which was just as well, as i did not want to spend a lot of time there. Happy holidays.

Great holiday

by A TripAdvisor Member

We arrived back home after our fortnight's holiday at this hotel on the 18th July 2004.

The room and hotel were kept spotlessly clean. There was nothing wrong with the food or the location. My husband can be a very choosy eater, but he never went without a meal at the hotel and was never hungry. We had a room which was away from the pool side and we did not have any problem sleeping and I might add neither of us are deaf.

We had a brilliant holiday there and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to any one and we would return here with pleasure.

The only complaint we would have is that other British holiday makers monopolised the sun beds for the whole day even though a lot of the beds were actually unoccupied for the best part, only towels were left to "book" their place in the sun.

If anything the hotel staff should remove these towels when the beds have been vacant for over 15 minutes to allow others to use them.

The staff were only too happy to help you if needed.

Anybody thinking of going here, please do not be put off by the derogatory comments made by some of the other holiday makers. Some people just love to complain about anything and everything.

We will certainly go back again and let's face it a holiday is what you make it.

apartments are superb value

by A TripAdvisor Member

we booked apartment via direct holidays . the apartments which are on three floors only, are situated in the gardens of the main hotel. closer to the beach than the main hotel and on approximately the same level as the beach with is about 5 hundred yards away the apartments also have its own pool you can use all the facilities of the hotel including booking or upgrading to half board or full whilst retaining the apartments .
the apartments have been fully refurbished and have full air con and a ceiling fan in the bedroom (we had a one bed apartment .) if u have an even numbered room you are on the main street side of the block can be a little bit noisy at night but hey you also have double glazing so shut your windows and keep air con on . these are delightful apartments and if you want total quiet ask for odd numbered room and you will find yourself at the back in a very quiet neighbourhood.
we were on the front of the apartments overlooking the road and a few bars and supermarket etc. we stayed there during the european fottie championships and only on one or two occasions were we disturbed by dutch supporters who partied till dawn when their team won thru to the finals.
all in all superb apartments for the independent minded whether you are old or young alone or with kids ...you really woulf find these apartments hard to beat if you want to use the main hotel and have mobility problems then you may find it a bit of a prob as the main hotel is situated up a steep hill .
We would not hesitate to book these apartments again and indeed will go back . we stayed here last week in june 2004 and have no doubt whatsoever that apartments are much better value than main hotel plus you can use all the facilities and entertainment that hotel offers whilst distancing yourself from that package holiday feeling if you want .palce is spotlessly clean and staff are friendly and helpfull .all reception staff speak english very well too .
oh by the way the gardens which link the hotel and apartments are lovely places to read a book sit in the shade or even sit under a tree beside the apartments pool .
. you are a 4 euro taxi fare from the town centre which is great for shoppers and bargain hunters also the town centre is for the clubbers if it suits you. We are not joking when we say this is prob one of the best kept secrets in torremolinos (the apartments that is ) what are you waiting for book it !!. Whatever your age
GOOD LUCK
