A palace or church on every corner !

by elucas

Palacio Vela de los Cobos - the handsome family seat of the Cobos family. The palace has an elegant loggia on the top floor and most unusual windows on the corner of the building. Ask at the tourist office for opening hours.

Not far away is the early 17th century Palacio de Conde Guadiana - another impressive building with corner windows - all very useful as the important families could then "keep an eye on one another".

The church of San Pedro is one of several ancient churches in the old city.

If you enlarge the picture of the sundial on a palace wall you can clearly see the date - 1604.

Tourist office: Palacio Marques de Contadero, C/Baja del Marques 4 (off Piazza del Ayuntamiento).
Tel: 953 75 08 97. Open Mon-Sat 8-3. Closed Sunday.

Vázquez de Molina's Palace (Town Hall)

by spanishguy

This wonderful palace was commissioned by Juan Vázquez de Molina, Francisco de los Cobos' nephew, both of them Chamber Secretaries of the King Philip II. It is a typical Renaissance palace, and it's by far the best one in town. It was a monastery, a palace and, currently, the Town Hall. It has two façades: the main one, at Vázquez de Molina Square, is Renaissance and the other one, at Ayuntamiento Square, is of classicism style..

by spanishguy

Francisco de los Cobos, Chamber Secretary of the King Philip II, became a really powerful man. He commissioned the construction of a church devoted to the Savior of the World. This is the masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance private religious architecture. The church has a original style, with a rounded tower (one of the few in Spain) and lots of sculptures either inside and outside, giving a irregular outline to the building.

A walking tour of Ubeda -12- Redonda de Miradores

by alucas

Turn south from Plaza Santa Lucia and follow the Redonda de Miradores round the outside of the old city walls. You pass this row of small houses, built up against the walls, and then the view unfolds in front of you. Olive plantations cover the valley, whilst in the distance the hills of the Sierra de Cazorla, the Sierra del Toya and the Sierra de la Cruz rise up to over 2000 metres. Have a close look at the other photos, and you will see what is so special about the countyside around Ubeda.
