Travel Tips for Úbeda

Holy Week - Semana Santa

by spanishguy

There are lost of Brotherhoods in Úbeda, as in any Spanish city, which take their images out of the churches during the Holy Week to commemorate the Passion of Christ. They are processions where all the brothers are dressed with tuniscs and they have their head covered with a mask while going with the images of Christ and the Virgin Mary.

by spanishguy

This tower was part of the medieval walls (13th century) and the clock and its bells were added at the 16th century. It's placed at Plaza de Andalucia, which is a kind of social centre, where the people from Úbeda usually have meetings at social events.

A walking tour of Ubeda - 7 - P de Vasquez Molina

by alucas

Next to the church of Santa Maria de los Reales Alcazares is the Carcel del Obisco – Bishop’s prison - the story has it that this is where misbehaving nuns were sent for punishment ! It is now the town's courthouse (sorry, no picture, the police were looking a bit fierce !).

Next to the prison stands the Palacio del Marques de Mancera with it's imposing, if rather bland, tower, and adjoining the palace is the Antigo Posito or Old Granary Store. These buildings are fine individual buildings, if not outstanding, but collectively complete this fine square.

Some details . . .

by elucas

Many of the buildings are decorated with figures, gargoyles, family crests or saints, which all add to the character of the town and emphazise the wealth of their original owners.

This little gargoyle is one of four on the top of the front facade of the Casa de las Torres on Plaza San Lorenzo. Behind and around are a selection of mythological creatures. The Casa was commissioned by Andres Davalos, who was a Governor of Ubeda, in the early 16th century. The facade of the Casa is shown in the second picture in this tip.

The other pictures show a couple sitting on either side of the top of an archway - the lady appears to be holding a bunch of grapes, another shows a small tower, and finally the family crest over the front door of the Palacio de las Cadenas in Plaza Vazquez de Molina.

A walking tour of Ubeda - 11 - Plaza Santa Lucia

by alucas

At the end of C. Baja del Salvador, you will be rewarded with this view over the countryside and hills over the east. Just to your left is the Plaza Santa Lucia, with an impressive streetlight in the middle. The shop at the back sells crafts, some good, some touristy, but not interesting enough to draw us inside. The drinking fountain outside seemed to attract the schoolchildren, who had stopped in the square for a packed lunch, after visiting the Capilla.
