Pico Aneto (3404 m) - Winter Ascent
I was in Benasque between 28 and 30 of december 2003. We were a group that came from Oporto, in Portugal to try the summit of Pico Aneto (3404 m). But when we arrive to Benasque the wheather was very bad, lots of wind and snow falling all the time with temperatures below 0ºC. So we wait one day to start the ascent.
We sleept one night in a camping park with our tents and in the next morning we were already in the mountain. In the beginning there was -5ºC and we saw some people doing backcountry ski, but as we get up to the mountain we were alone. And soon starts snowing and the route were covered with very deep snow, but after four hours of opening the way up we were near the renclusa hut, which were closed, but we find a small hut near it to spend the night.
In the next morning, as the wheather were worst, we weren't to the summit and return back to the camping zone and then to Portugal, and me back to Azores islands, where i live. Althouh we didn't reach the summit, it was a great experience and the mountain still there for the next time.
As you can see in this picture, which shows how deep the snow was in the route, on the half way to renclusa hut.
