Tella - another gem of a village
by duncanlbrown
Tella is another village up in the Pyrenees - turn off the road between Ainsa and Bielsa at the "Dolmen de Tella" sign and follow it up the tortuous mountain road. The dolmen itself is a bit disappointing, if you've seen dolmens in Brittany or Cornwall you might even miss this one!
Up in Tella there are fantastic views of the mountains, a church which is the start of the Ermita trail (well worth the 30 minutes walk) and a visitors centre. And a fizzy drink dispenser!
Hiking up Petramula
by duncanlbrown
This is a valley from where you can hike up to the Lagos de la Muna, but if you have turned into a flabby office monkey like me, you won't make it all the way up. Park at the wide open car park by a shepherd's hut (about 3 km up the dirt road from Chisagues, the road after this is only good for 4WDs. Hike up the road to the top of the valley, then round the right hand bend and take the first path on the left. Keep going up til you are worn out. Then eat the huge bocadillos you got from the Parador. Snooze for 20 mins then come back down for your Gin & Tonic. What a great day out. We climbed from 1600 metres to about 2100 and were totally knackered,
Better in the centre than it looks from outside

"Get out of the car"
Bielsa doesn't look too hot from the main road, but park up next to the swimming pool and explore - it's a lot better inside. Plenty restaurants, cafes and bars, nice church, square etc. But the best thing about Bielsa is the surrounding coutryside - perhaps some of the most spectacular in Europe. It's a bit off the beaten track so isn't yet too developed.
I love it there, wish it was closer to home.
