Looking to stay in a parador

by scallens

We will be traveling by car from San Sebastian to Barcelona in early October. We are looking to stay 1 night in a parador just for the experience. Can anyone recommend a nice one in the Pyrenees that won't break the bank?

I am not sure if there are any Parador Hotels that would be entirely suitable in the Pyrenees. I love the stuffy old converted castles or monasteries and the ones in Santo Domingo de Calzada (sort of Rioja land) and the one further west towards Madrid at Lerma are pretty special. But those are off your route. And the one in Hondarribia overlooking France is too close to San Sebastian and anyway not in Aragon! So I think the best one is the hotel in Sos del Rey Católico, Zaragoza although have not stopped there myself and it looks like it is situated in the lower Pyrenees foothills and maybe the real majesty of the Pyrenees will not be recognised from such location.
For example the Parador beneath the mighty Monte Perdido: Parador de Bielsa would get my vote but I would need to stay in that place for a few days to enjoy the scenery and not just the Parador. And anyway you can spemnd a lot of time driving through the foothills of the Pyrenees and in october the sun light hours get shorter so maybe if it is one overnight stop why not look at Zaragoza ? Some nice places to stay !

Sos del Rey Catolico is, as others already said, in the pre-Pyrenees area, but the town is one of the most beautiful in the area. Besides it's in an old castle building (I guess is what you want "if just for the experience"). Actually it's the only one near the Pyrenees I'd consider if looking for "atmosphere".

The parador in Bielsa it's nice, closer to the Ordesa Park (but as said, you need more time to explore this, not just one night) but it's not in castle, it's just a nice mountain hotel. More or less the same about the one in Arties. The parador in Vielha (Vall d'Aran) is a modern building (from the 50's or so).

So, actually the only one that's more or less in the middle of your route and that will be an experience it's the one in Sos. You will not regret.

Olite it's another amazing castle but probably too close to San Sebastian for you. But, if possible, stop in the town on your way .

We always carry a set of Michelin maps and now have a GPS with maps of Europe. Most helpful.
