A two star hotel with a four star soul

The hotel:
don’t let discourage you by a quite anonymous entrance hall, this hotel is a very nice place to spend some days in Zaragoza. The hotel has been recently renovated and everything is spotless and new.
Location:
it is located less than 100mt from the Church of Pilar, in the historic centre. The street is reserved to the residents and cars pass just occasionally. If you have your car with you, you must park it in the hotel garage, unless it would be very hard (say impossible) to find a parking downtown.
Rooms:
rooms aren’t very large, however they are fine decorated. Mine (n° 409) had a wooden pavement (finally no carpets!), a writing table, a built-in wardrobe and a LCD tv. The bathroom wasn’t very big too but it s new, it had a bath tub but no bidet (as everywhere in Spain)!

Unique Quality: The good:
it may sound as a flattery, however I found a lot of good things in this little hotel, beside the rooms, I found a very rich breakfast, with sausages and eggs and so on to satisfy Anglo-Saxon clients and home made cakes for Mediterranean clients (like my husband and me). The staff is friendly and always ready to help, giving you information about things to see, where to shop or to eat. They have an internet connection in the hall at price of 1€ per hour.
The bad:
yes there is a little spot in this immaculate picture: they have no rooms for non smoking people, so when you enter in the room, if you have a sensitive nose, you’ll surely feel a light odour of smoke, however keeping the window open for a while eliminates this problem. I must advise you that in Zaragoza it will be very hard (say impossible) to find restaurants for non smokers, because even in the non smoking areas they allow clients to light a cigarette as an end to the meal.
Price:
Quite low, taking into account the quality of the service. (average of € 65 for a double room, breakfast included).
Score:
I would advise this hotel for business and leisure travels.

More about Hotel Sauce

Friendly hotel in central Zaragoza

by TripAdvisor Member struzzetta

My partner and I had a very pleasant stay at the Hotel Sauce last week, and we would definitely book there again should we happen to travel to Zaragoza again in the future.

It is a simple hotel but has nothing to envy to more luxurious and more expensive properties.

The staff was friendly and smiling all the time, and we received many good suggestions for restaurants, sightseeing and shopping in town.
We were especially impressed by Pilar's kindness at breakfast!

The room was large and clean, with a comfortable bathroom and a great shower.

We wish Hotel Sauce a growing success in the future.

What more would you expect?

by TripAdvisor Member john_t_riffic

For a budget hotel slap in the centre of town what else would you want? Hotel Sauce is well placed, affordable and great value for money.

The rooms all seemed to be pretty large, have good facilities for a budget hotel (TV, toiletries, safe, etc) and above all they were clean.

Reviews complaining of night time noise and terrible restaurants nearby can not be comfirmed here. We certainly didn't have any interuptions to our sleep and found great places to eat... the only difficulty was not speaking Spanish as most places we visted didn't have English speaking staff, but why should they - we were in their country.

Great choice for a break on a budget...if you want 5 star though go elsewhere and pay 4 or 5 times as much per night.

Final comment is a story that might have ended differently in another hotel, getting ready to go out one morning my wife left a diamond necklace on our unmade bed. We hung the please make up the room sign and left. About an hour later we realised what we'd done and rushed back in a panic that the necklace was, at best, going through the hotel washing machine. Not a bit of it, it was neatly laid out on top of the TV where we could easily see it. As i say, in other budget hotels i've stayed in that may have been the last we saw of it!

Somewhat over-rated

Hotel is not that easy to find from the airport bus set-down stop on Paseo de Pamplona so ask the hotel for directions ahead of arrival. Check-in was efficient but neither welcolming nor warm. We had a room on the 4th floor - 407 I think. It was street facing (it's a side street) and with double glazing I figured that would be fine. When there's no wind blowing through Zaragoza, a pall of pollution descends from a nearby paper factory - the air hangs heavy with a nauseating stench that pervaded the whole hotel as well as the air outside. It made both of us feel quite ill. This is not the hotel's fault but it seriously coloured our experience nonetheless! We stayed at the hotel on a Friday night and courtesy of the nearby all-night disco-club I didn't manage to get a single wink of sleep. What a racket! People shouting, fighting, vomiting, overturning the bins all the way through until about 7 am!! Don't these people have homes to go to?? The mattress in the room had definitely seen better days and was well overdue an upgrade. It sagged here, it sagged there and roll together was completely unavoidable. My back still aches from it. Bathroom was fine. Clean and roomy with good amenities.

Buffet breakfast next morning was a bleary eyed affair. Selection is okay but for the EUR8 charge, you'd probably do better at a nearby cafe. Lady in charge of the breakfast buffet is a gem. Cheery, warm and a smile for everyone!!!

Maybe we just had a bad experience but I cannot echo the gushing praise for this hotel vocalised elsewhere on this thread.

One final word of extreme caution. Avoid the Italian pizzeria at the end of the street - it's called Le Tagliatelle. Both our meals were undercooked, a chicken dish was practically raw and the diners at the table beside us walked out in disgust at their pizza. Crusty round the edges, completely uncooked underneath. Rude staff and it's overpriced. Avoid like the plague!!!

Hope your experience is better.

Great Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member VivBromley

Stayed for 2 nights in May 2008, really good small hotel in a good location.  Room was fine and very clean.  The lady who serves the breakfast is wonderful - always smiling and welcoming.  She makes fresh coffee for each person plus freshly squeezed orange juice - I have never had this in large hotels where it is usually stewed coffee and artificial juice. Very good selection for breakfast - too tempting!  Reception staff very good and with good English - a great stay.

Great hotel, great location

by TripAdvisor Member ej17

This is an ideal hotel if you are staying in Zaragoza. Great location near to the old town and Pilar cathedral as well being close to the Paseo de Independencia to pick up buses and the main shopping strip.
Very comfortable room with a good bathroom. Great value and lovely breakfast. Hotel staff are very friendly. Would definately recommend to friends and family and would return there in the future.

Nice hotel and excellent value

by TripAdvisor Member PaulSEA1

I give this five stars for being a much greater value than reflected by the 75 Euro price we paid. I've paid many times that for much less in Europe.

We found Sauce to be conveniently located in the heart of town. It's an updated hotel, everything functioned well, and the staff was quite friendly. Our room was largish and very tastefully decorated. Our room was in a back corner and had no noise issue at all.

This hotel has fewer stars in the European rating system because it does not have things like minibars and a shoe shine machine. I'm delighted as-is with the lower rates.

The posted rate for internet use was 1 Euro / hour but they wiaved the charge seemingly as a matter of course.

We did not use the bar or restaurant in the hotel so cannot comment there.

Good work Sauce!

Great central position

by TripAdvisor Member humbert1

A good value Hotel in the centre of the old part of Zaragoza( only 200 metres from the magnifecent cathedral) Plenty of bars and restaurents nearby. the room I had at the top of the hotel was large and very comfortable. The receprion staff were very helpful and spoke English
