Fiesta San Valero

by ginirover

We're going to Zaragoza next January and found out that by coincidence we're there during their fiesta San Valero (Jan 29).
We do find enough explanations why this fiesta is taking placet, but nothing so far on what we can expect of this fiesta...
Does anybody have an idea Would it be open to foreigners (I speak spannish) or is it more something for the locals ?

Some years have already passed since I was living in Zaragoza, but the only I can remember for that day was having a day off and eating a special pastry (roscón). As far I remember is a low-key holiday, can't remember any special event associated to it. A "fiesta" in Spain does not necessarily means a big party or public event (and by the way, when they are, it's unlikely to be exclusive to the locals, everybody tends to be welcome :))

Probably MiguelZGZ will chime in to confirm or to correct me ;-))

'Zaragoza honours its patron saint during the Fiesta de San Valero. The lively fiesta sees theatre, children's events, rock concerts and street dancing held around the city centre. Don't miss the giant roscón cake in the Plaza del Pilar.'

People go across continents to certain fiestas, so all welcome. However if you are actually staying in the Plaza del Pilar here, it may be a bit noisy by night!!

Good fum but not if you want a quiet life

Hello.
San Valero is not big deal in Zaragoza. Just a day we don´t go to work...so, thinking about it, it is big deal. ;-)

It uses to be too damn cold and WINDY (Zaragoza is known by its wind). Yes, they give out the special pastry(Roscon) at the main square of the city, but be ready to wait a LONG line, just to get a portion. They sell it in any pastry shop of the city, diferent sizes, so you can get the one that fits you!
I checked the calendar. This year it is on a saturday...so, no big deal. Maybe a bit more crowed streets during day-time, or maybe a concert in any of the places for concerts at night...so, don´t worry.

Have fun.

Travel Tips for Zaragoza

Aljafería Palace

by Aitana

This palace was built in the 11th century, during the Moorish domination. When Zaragoza was reconquered, the palace became the residence of the christian kings of Aragón. Later, it would be also the palace of the Catholic Kings, Isabel de Castilla and Fernando de Aragón.
The Aljafería is a good example of Mudejar architecture.
