More about Valentin Son Bou Hotel-Aptos
Me and my wife stayed at San Valentin for one week Half Board from 06 July 2007 - 13 July 2007.
We booked our holiday through First Choice and used this websites reviews as a basis which we found very misleading.
We had very good flight times during the day which made the journey very smooth indeed. The flight is only something like 1.5 hours - very good airline also (First Choice). Upon arriving at the airport in Menorca there was a rep who pointed out the coach and after about half an hour waiting for the stragglers we were on our way. The hotel is about 30 mins from the airport.
The first impressions we had of the hotel upon arrival was just how large it was. There seemed to be at least 250 rooms in the hotel and then some more apartments (about 50). It was much larger than we anticipated. The reception people were on the whole friendly, there were a couple of miserable people later in the week behind the desk but generally not too bad.
When we checked in we were offered a room change to one next to the 'adult only bar' and as compensation we were offered all inclusive. We decided to stick with the original room.
The room itself was very clean and comfortable. It had a safe, aircon, a tv and a balcony. It didn't have tea making facilities or a fridge. I know the lack of kettle was a hindrance to those with children. We found no fridge annoying as the drinking water and beer does not stay cool.
The first night of half board in the restaurant was something of an eye opener and really did set the holiday off on the wrong foot.
You are supposed to wait by the door for someone to seat you. There was one head waiter who smiled and was polite but the others were so surly and rude that it surprises me that they decided upon a career in hospitality. I cannot believe how obtuse and downright rude they were. They would shout 'You. Stop and wait there.' if anyone didn't queue by the door. 'You. Sit at that table'. Very very rude. If rude people annoy you then you are in for a treat here. We also had occasions where they showed us to a table, we went off to get starters and came back to find someone else sitting in our seats!! This happened to a few people. There surly response certainly didn’t make things better. Best to get seated and one of you get some bread or something to put on the table to make it look occupied.
The actually waitress staff were very pleasant and like I say, one of the head waiters was fine.
The process for getting your food is even more unpleasant than the greetings from the surly head waiters.
It really is a free for all. You grab a plate and then fight your way to the food. In Britain we tend to queue and wait our turn. You can forget that. It was none stop pushing, mainly from the Spanish guests or from the British guests who had been there a few days and got used to the system. The Spanish guests simply did not queue at all, they just pushed you out of the way and pushed in left right and centre. We didn't experience this in Majorca but it created a very unpleasant atmosphere here. Every British guest we spoke to said the same thing. One guest started shouting at a Spanish lady who simply pushed ahead of about 10 people. There was lots of pushing. Prepare yourself.
I'm not overly convinced that they were pushing to get to the food though, because, apart from the odd decent dish there was a lot of mediocre food. Standard fair really and nowhere near what I would class as 4star. I know the star rating can vary between countries but this food was definitely two/three star. It was chips, tinned vegetables, tinned mushrooms and hard bread. Some of the meat was nice and occasionally they would have some very nice pasta. A lot of the food was just mass produced tinned food which combined with surly waiters and lots of pushing meant we completely regretted going half board. Looking at the town centre though, there didn't seem a massive amount of places to eat for self catering either though!
Most of the food was not labelled either so not great for my wife who is both a vegetarian and pregnant! The veggie food was not great, especially if you don’t eat fish. Some of the Paella, the fruit and the morning baked goods were quite nice, but again, not four star.
The first night was a real eye opener as well, literally. The hotel is so so so so so noisy. I've never stayed anywhere with so much noise. Each of the hotel room doors has a stupid lock on it which means that you need to slam the door to close it. So, from about 8:00pm onwards there is pretty much constant banging. There is also lots of shouting and screaming at all hours. Ear plugs and a pillow of my head did nothing to stop the noise. Some other guests were also asking to change rooms because of the noise from the kitchen staff.
The tour rep was supposed to give us the standard introduction to the resort on the first morning. We were given a welcome card when we checked in which stated 10:00am - reception. At 10:20 we'd had enough of waiting around and instead went to the pool only to find the rep in the bar giving the introduction. It appeared we and another couple had been given the wrong information on our cards. Great start. We were also given no check out information either so we had to phone the First Choice head office. Useless. We very rarely use the reps and only book for peace of mind but they really were quite poor.
The pool area was very good. The pool and surrounding area was very clean and pleasant. They do play loud music though so avoid any of the outdoor speakers. The food at the pool bar is good for salads and sandwiches but the pasta and pizza is awful.
The evening bar is pretty decent as well with a nice outdoor area. The beer is pretty good and most of the staff are pleasant. Some are awful though, fighting it out with the head waiter for the surly award.
The kids entertainment seemed pretty decent with Dino the penguin. A word of caution though, the entertainment put on for the adults is on the whole poor. The Beijing Acrobats was very good, but the Bee Gees tribute were poor.
The staff Hollywood production was woeful. It was so poor that almost everyone in the crowd was laughing when I think the entertainers thought it was dramatic. It was so bad that it actually was funny, for about 10 minutes. The bar was pretty empty that night though.
I would not recommend staying at the San Valentin Son Bou. Especially not during peak time. It is noisy and the members of staff who are rude ruin the atmosphere of the whole hotel. The decor, hotel and facilities are definitely 4star. The service and food are strictly 3star.
Great Family Holiday
4 Adults Travelled 61,59,37,28 Children 3 & 1
I will begin my report on this holiday with the method of travel.
We travelled through British Airways and was firstly impressed by the level of service BA offered especially the extra leg room and comfort of seats. We had not opted for an in flight meal as our flight was only 2 hours but was still offered food & drink for free for both on our outbound and inbound journey.
We had booked online with Travel Republic.co.uk who also arranged our transfer from the aiport to the resort, again I was impressed with the service of a private mini bus straight to our resort. A good start to a very intersesting holiday.
We arrived at our resort at 22:30 and although it was late and we very tired we were pleasently greeted by very smartly dressed reception staff who spoke very good english gave us our all inclusive wrist bands and directed us to our accomodation.
We initially were placed in the Apartments of the resort which were clean and tidy but not what we originally thought we had booked. This was not a problem though because after a conversation with the Manager we were able to be upgraded at no extra cost to the hotel.
Generally I was very impressed throughout the two weeks we were there with the level of service the staff offered ranging from the smile and 'Hola' you got each morning from the cleaning staff. The friendly smile and level of service from the catering staff. The energy and enthusiam from the Entertainment staff and the care and attention to detail you received from the reception/Mangement team.
My two children 3 & 1 although were quite young were always kept busy by the various activities that were going on. A free nursery is offered on site with good facilities and qualified staff caring for the kids. Although we never left them out of our site due to the recent events on the news, we were impressed with the care and attention the staff gave to the kids.
For the older children there was also an activity hut on site that had a range of games, plus a little play area with a swing slide and a climbing frame.
There were two pools, an adults pool that did not exceed 2 metres and a seperate kids pool that did not exceed 1/2 metre. These were manned by a lifeguard throughout the day. Get you sunbeds early though they do get snapped up quickly.
We had gone all inclusive, although the hotel offered a half board and a self catering option. I had a couple of issues with this:
Firstly the snack bar located near the pool did not offer the full menu as AI and you were only allowed to eat between certain times of the day at this bar.
Secondly the drinks throughout the complex were not all part of the AI so you had to be careful what you ordered, as this would be charged to your room if not part of the AI. Even lime & Black current cordial was not part of AI this was especially annoying for me as I am quite partial to a rum & blackcurrant or a Lager & Lime.
The food in the complex was buffet style plus a chef cooking area it was varied and plentiful.
One issue my wife had was a lot of fish dishes were on offer during lunch and dinner times and if you were partial to a pork chop or two then you were okay. On a whole though the food was cooked fresh and very well presented.
The upgraded room we managed to get was a Junior suite and although very clean and tidy and with a great view, the furniture and decor was a little outdated. I will add though that the room was cleaned on a daily basis and was kept to a very high standard.
The entertainment of an evening began firstly with a mini disco and entertaiment for the kids with TINO the PENGUINO. This was a good start to what I would say was a varied entertainment program, ranging from the in house staff entertaining us with there comic take offs and songs, to the Abba, Freddy Mercury & Bee Gees tribute bands to the magician and Chinese acrobat nights that were on offer during our stay.
I would have only one small gripe, no food on offer during the evening. Somtimes after a few drinks during the entertainment, a portion of chips or a burger would have gone down a treat.
The other issue we did discover during our stay was the limited toilet facilties around the hotel complex. Apart from going back to the room and using your own toilet, during the evenings entertainment there was only one ladies toilet nearby with two cubicles and one mens toilet. These did break down on a couple of occasions probably due to there excessive use during the evenings. People then had to resort to using there own room facilities.
Although we spent most of our time within the complex we did venture out to Son Bou on a few occasions.
The hotel was located on top of a hill and the walk to Son Bou was about 15 minutes. The hotel did offer a free bus service every 1/2 hour but this stopped at 19:00. So if you decided you wanted an evening out into Son Bou you had a very tiring walk back up the hill or alternatively a long wait for a cab back.
Although I have highlighted some issues with the holiday overall this was a very good holiday and I would recomend it to any young family wishing to travel to an entertaining but also a relaxing resort.
Amazing memories, loved every minute!
this hotel is AMAZING!!!
i have been going since 2001 with my family and we kept going back for more. the one year we went to barcelona instead we missed it so much we booked straight up for the following year at san val.
very very friendly, everyone is welcoming, reception is very helpful and can speak about 6 different languages perfectly! always activites on no matter how old you are - mini club, maxi club, teenies and adults for during the day - anything from aerobics to football to archery to the cocktail games. the entertainers work really hard to make sure u have the most enjoyable time you can.
very safe complex, new addition of a lifeguard by the pool the past two years. Lots of returning guests so everyone gets to know each other and look out for each other. parents can relax in peace and feel happy that their kids will be safe. The no-reserving of sunbeds policy means the family can always get beds next to each other.
the town is really nice - theres a regular free shuttle bus down to the town as the hotel is a bit of a walk from the beach - but not a problem at night when theres no glaring sun. lots of souvenir shops and some pretty boutiques. some good cafes and of course the hawaiian bar for those MASSIVE fruity cocktails, joes bar for english newspapers and sky sports - u wont miss out on wimbledon or the golf!, club tropicana for a bit of a dance and more!
on site at the hotel theres a really well stocked supermarket with most of the things you would need - snacks, snadwiches, bread, juice etc and more! but if theres something more specific there is a bigger air conditioned supermarket down in the town. for even more shopping there are regular buses from the bus stop in the town to mahon.
food and drink in the hotel is excellent. great pool side bar and snack bar with a shaded seating area lets you stay in the warmth without getting burnt. meals in the main hotel restaurant is buffet style and offers a wide variety of both cold and hot foods. there are always vegetarian and children's menu options. there is also a drinks service and the waiters are very efficient. the lounge bar is also very good offerring a wide variety of cocktails and other drinks. there is table service so there is no need to queue at the bar and miss the entertainment. there is also a private adults bar.
evening entertainment varies between proffessional shows and shows done by the resident entertainment team. the professional shows are carefully selected and of a high standard. the shows put on by the entertainment team are always good fun and they like to involve as many of the guests as possible. every year i have stayed at the hotel i have been in the show - as an orphan, as a mermaid and as raffiki to name a few....
i have had some of the best holidays i have ever had in this hotel and would reccommend it to anyone who wants to have fun, relax and meet some great new friends.
nice hotel shame about the other guests!
We have recently returned from our 25th Anniversary holiday at the Hotel Valentin. We had been treated by our children for a 1 week break at the end of May.
The hotel itself was very nice, rooms clean and staff friendly. However, our holiday was totally ruined by a group of so called families, who were the typical english lager louts!! They obviously took advantage of the all inclusive drinks!!!!!!!!!!!
During our stay my wife was extremely offended by the bad language and loud drunken behaviour by the pool bar. This group were also unsuitably dressed on many occasions - cross dressing and wearing togas! She spent half her time worrying about their children who were left to their own devices and up far too late!
I took it on board to complain to the Hotel Manager, but i think it would of been an impossible task to tame this crowd!
I really feel that they should have been thrown out of the hotel and the other many guests put first!! My complaint is with the management!
Please do not let this put you off the hotel or resort, as i am sure we would of had a lovely time without this particular crowd!
Just returned from the San Valentin, had a great time. I think we had the best room in the hotel (302). The ones at the end of the wings have extra large balconies on two sides. This means more room, plus able to move into/out of the sun!
The food excellant, fresh varied and well presented. We used to go for the restaurant opening for dinner (6:45), that way we got the best seats, plus greatest choice.
We will DEFINATELY go back here again.
We have just returned from a fully inclusive weeks, stay in this hotel. We (2 adults & twins aged ten) were comfortably accomodated in a one bedroom apartment in the hotel grounds. The buildings and grounds are well kept and maintained, the staff are polite and helpful, especially the staff at pool bar, Tropicana. The buffet food was excellent for on mass catering albeit repetive in choice, and leaving you wishing for table service by day three. The evening entertainment was varied and interesting, the female quiz compere deserves recognition for repeating each question in three languages -indeed it was a long quiz night. The sun beds, bus to the beach, beauty treatments, internet facility, car hire, excursions, indoor pool, Gym and adult only seating and bar areas were all very accessible.
So, for the but! Far to many under fives, with parents who did not respect that couples, singles or families with older children might find small children who constantly screamed, shouted, cried, ran around the pool, restuarant and bars a tad irritating.
The hotel does have a large childrens pool and terrace, yet non swimming babies and children continued to float into the deep end of the main pool! This high percentage of under fives also dictated that the childrens entertainment was very uncool, when you are ten.
This hotel is not for you if babies and pre-schoolers along with their parents have the potential to spoil your summer vacation.
My partner and I stayed stayed at the Valentin in the apartments self catering for a quiet get away for a week. The Hotel itself is lovely and the staff very helpful and attentive. Our apartment was quite dated and I wouldn't really rate it a 4*, however the hotel complex itself was worthy of the rating. The free bus service was efficent and great as the walk back from the beach is up hill and hard work in the heat! As the bus last pick up is at 7.10 if you can't face the walk at night there is a mini train that leaves from the beach front and drops you off at the hotel reception (3 euros each), last one is at 10.30pm again this was very good and a great photo opportunity as the views are amazing. On our last night we ate in the hotels resturant and was disappointed. The Head Waiter was very rude and we were told off for sitting a table made up for 3, rather than 2. I didn't want to sit in the middle where the smaller tables were and really didin't see the issue with sitting in a quiter spot - it wasn't busy and there are lots of tables! Our flight back was late and the hotel was vert helpful, there is a room to put your suitcases in and a shower and changing area to get changed before you head for home. Hotel entertainment isn't really my thing, but we did watch The Beatles who were fab - a surprising must see! The Adults bar was a god send and offered a quite realxing atmosphere away from the chaos in the main bar!
Son bou is lovley we ate at Casa Andre most nights, it was lovely food and excellent service - you'll probably have to book though as they are very busy. The house special steak for two is highly recommened!
We're going to book again for next year - hopefully next time our room will be one that has been refurbished!
me my wife and two sons just had 2 weeks in the valentin in son bou.the hotel is very nice and we had a lovely time the kids club is just fantastic.we had a self catering apartment witch was very nice and clean.i must advise anyone traveling to this hotel to go all inclusive because it is very exspensive otherwise even the supermarket on site is very over prised comperd to the ones in town.the hotel bus is free and leaves every half hour to bring you down to son bou and back again the beech is the nicest ive ever seen.hotel entertainment is very good something differant every night over all a great holiday in very nice part of the world bring lots of money if you go self catering.
Just returned after staying at the apartments for one week all-inclusive with my family (Wife and 2 kid aged 1 and 3). The apartments are basic (i'd say a 3*/ 3+*) but very clean, they consist of a bedroom and a living room with a kitchenette. The living room sofa can be turned into a bed, it is actually very comfy! Only gripe with the rooms being that they are not cleaned on a daily basis, maid came twice during out stay. By the way, the apartments are being refurbed, ours had not yet been refurbed and it wasn't bad, the refurbed ones looked even better. The pool area at the hotel was very clean, the water in the pool was clean and well maintained but very cold until mid afternoon. Ample sunbeds available and even a polite notice warning that sunbeds are not to be reserved by leaving your towel on them! Entertainment for kids was mediocre, same thing every day and only suitable for the younger kids. Adult ents was good and to be honest, most kids stayed up to watch too. They had professional entertainers most nights, during our stay they had the four tops, a soul/swing group, the Beijing acrobats and a magician. Food at the resaurant was good, buffet meals with a large variety of dishes on offer every day. Always several fish dishes, roast meat, vegetables/ chips, pizza, pasta, salads, fruits and nice deserts too! Even my veggie wife managed to find suitable food for a whole week so it can't be bad! Staff at the hotel are very friendly and accomodating. There is very little we could fault at the Valentin and would recommend it to anyone. We spoke to lots of other guests whilst there and we only met one whom was dissatisfied there. The beach is a mile away and would be a difficult walk, espcially the way back as the hotel is at the top of a hill. The courtesy bus is frequent and seemed a popular choice of the guests staying here. We had a hire car, ample parking for you at the hotel and there is even as Avis office inside the hotel if you want to rent. The beach on Son Bou is nice, lots of space and clean. We visited Cala Galdana to see what all the fuss was about, personally I prefered the beach at Son Bou. If you have any doubts about this place - Don't it's a safe bet andunless you looking for 5* you are unlikely to be disappointed.
My boyfriend and I have just returned from a one week stay at San Valentin. We had a fantastic holiday and could not fault this hotel. The reception staff were lovely apart from one man who was slightly rude. The rooms are of a very good size and very clean and decorated well. The cleaners do a great job and are also very friendly. We only used the hotel main bar once because it was full of children, this was not a bad thing as it is a very family friendly hotel and we expected this. Just not our scene. We used the adult bar which was great, nice and quiet and a lovely outdoor section. Most nights after our meal we went into son bou which is a 15min walk down a steep hill, this is fine to walk down and ok to walk up at night but hard in the heat of the day. The bars in son bou are nice and copacobana is a great entertainment bar.
The restuarant was nicely decorated and the waiters were friendly and very efficient (I am convinced the review dated the 16th July went to another hotel) The food was fantastic, great choice and all fresh! Lovely - we couldn't fault it. Yes I agree (16th july review) that the spanish people don't know how to wait in queues but that was hardly a major issue and certainly not the hotels fault! Breakfast also was fantastic, so much choice and always lovely fresh fruit!
The hotel pool was great - not overly crowded. Very clean. Yes there were kids but they are only enjoying their holidays as well. The snack bar was also good. The pizza was lovely and there was lots of choice and plenty of places to sit in the shade. Waitershere were great too.
So overall a fantastic hotel! I would recommend it to anyone.
