We are not "hotel" holiday makers and usually prefer to be self catering but this time we decided to be looked after for a change.
It was nevertheless with some apprehension that we booked two weeks in an hotel that also catered for package holidays.
We need not have worried -the hotel with 82 rooms was, in 1956, the first "big" hotel to be built in Mahon on the cliff overlooking the harbour and in the old "colonial" style..
Our twin room with a small balcony and a view of the harbour had very comfortable beds and sufficient accommodation and storage space - without being luxurious.
All the hotel staff were the most professional, helpful and friendly anyone could encounter.
The breakfast and dinner buffets always had an excellent variety to choose from and were well presented..
I particularly enjoyed the fresh fruits, salads and fish dishes but the meat dishes also offered interesting choices.
Although the food could not be described as "gourmet" it was much better than I expected from a holiday hotel. I certainly do not agree with the some of the very negatives comments about food at the hotel on TA.
Best of all was, that with the exception of one night, when we had a heavy shower, we had all our breakfasts and dinner on the large, attractive terrace overlooking the harbour.
Those evenings were memorable - but we could have done without the piped music that was occasionally relayed in the evening from the restaurant - piped music being one of my pet hates and a definite turn-off for us. Pipedown!
There was live music on 2 nights each week aimed at the mainly mature guests of the hotel.
Once or twice the wafting fumes on the evening air from a group of heavy smokers at an adjacent table was unpleasnat .... we did suggest to the management that all eating areas should be smoke free zones.
The hotel belongs to the SETH group which sets high environmental goals - so disposing of our empty bottles , newpapers etc in the neat receptacles provided, was easy and guilt free.
Housekeeping was of a very high standard - everywhere in the hotel, the attractive grounds and pool area was immaculately maintained.
The large Piano Bar Lounge (with TV), little used during our stay, is an area in need of refurbishment.
Unique Quality: The location overlooking the harbour. It was possible to walk down to the harbour or up in to the old city centre and for longer distances the local public transport was very good.
The staff - the friendliest and most professional you could find.
The cleanliness and high housekeeping standards both inside and outside the hotel including the pool. We would definitely return.
