Renting a car in August

by Gregi

Hi!
I'm taking my family on vacation for two weeks starting Aug 1st in port de Soller. I'm defenetely thinking of renting a small economy car for a week whilst there. What are my best options? To rent up front per internet or do it on site? What prices can I expect?

While I don't know the costs you are asking about, I can tell you to reserve your car in advance. Walk ins, those that wait until they arrive and then go to the car rental agency always pay more, it can be top dollar, as they are now at the mercy of the car rental agency.

August is extra-high season in Spain so expect lots of people...most of them looking for a car to explore the island...so, as said above, I think it is wiser to book in advance.
It is true that Mallorca is very well prepared for tourism, so you may find several agencies there to rent a car, maybe you would get a car at a similar price as in the internet...I don´t think there may be a big diference, so in my opinion, the sooner you get your car, the better.

As others said, book the car as soon as possible. You will not only get better prices per Internet, you may find there are no cars available (or no small economy cars, the most wanted) for your dates if you wait to the last minute. It's probably already late to get a good deal.

You may use a broker as hispacar.com to get prices.

Gregi, that's the busiest time of the year for car rental so I think you need to book straight away or you may not get anything. Car rental in Mallorca is not as cheap as it used to be, expect to pay a minimum of €200 per week for the most basic model. There are lots of companies - Sixt, Europcar, Mallorcacar, Avis, etc. Just google car rental+Mallorca for lots of options.
Enjoy your holiday! AM

It is always beneficial to rent a car from internet. This way you can save some money as you book a car in advance. The major disadvantage of booking a car 'on the site' is that the car you are looking for might not be available at that moment. So it is always better to pre plan and book things before catching a flight to an unknown destination. You may check out http://www.bestspaincarrental.com/ for the cars of your choice. If you stretch your budget a little, you will find some other cars too having comparable pricing to economy cars.

Travel Tips for Majorca Island

Palma, open all hours

by jol1y

Don't just stay in one place, travel around the island, you'll be surprised. Sunshine, sunshine, sunshine!! Thunderstorms!! People. Food. Wine. Festivals. Smell of fresh bread early morning. Swimming in the warm sea. Smiling children. Early morning walks before the heat. Markets. The smells. The sounds. The sights. The tastes. The quiet. The noise. Gracias Majorca.

NO mosquitos or jellyfish!!

by KeenTraveller08

In case you were worried, there were absolutely no mosquitos or jellyfish for the whole duration of our stay -end of August and first week of September. Which added to the pleasant experience of our trip.

Local delicacies

by nigelw6443

If you get the chance visit a local restaurant and try what the locals are eating.

One of my favourites at lunch time is the Pa Amb Oli which consists of slices of majorcan bread rubbed with garlic, olive oil and tomato and grilled slightly. This is then topped with a number of different selections such as Manchego cheese, York ham, Serrano ham of Tuna to name a few and dressed with salad and olives. This is especially good with a nice glass of chilled white wine. Sitting in a cafeteria and being the only non Spanish customer!

Flower wheel windmills

by hundertmorgen

This typical flower wheel windmills you can see especially in the south of majorca. They hem your way to the saltwork fields of Llevant with the pink-white gleaming salt lakes. In San Jordi a wonderful sandy beach with crystal clear water wait for you.

Packing List

by Kristina1701

If you're coming to Mallorca in spring I recommend to bring some trousers and t-shirts, as well as some pullovers and a light jacket for the evenings. Temperatures should be about 15-20°C. However in the evnings it gets a bit cooler. In some parts of the island it was also very stormy all day long.

In summer it gets really hot and you'll need summer clothes only (probably there are also exceptions; me, I always bring a pair of trousers, a pullover and a light jacket anyway). Oh, and don't forget your sunscreen as well as your sunglasses!
