Hotel Suggestions Please

by mandybailey

Hi All, I'm helping my sister and her family plan a holiday. She has 3 young children (age 1, 4 and 6 years). They like to stay in small, friendly, family run hotels/apartments. They don't mind if it's basic but they would like a swimming pool need a good location; close to town and the beach. Can anyone recommend somewhere?

Thanks!

Hello Mandy, I'm from Mallorca, I recommend you the north-eastern region of Mallorca. For example, from my experience when I was a child, "Cala Millor". I was in "Hotel Sabina Playa" (I was there a couple of summers) and it were a good holiday.
(Sorry for my english, I don't speak very good english.)

I'd recommend Puerto Pollensa, it's a beautiful resort and ideal for families. Have a look at www.puertpollensa.com for general info and click on 'private villas and apts for rent' on the left-hand side menu where you will find lots of private apartments for rent. I usually choose the 'south sandy beach area' from the drop-down menu.
Also if you want an apartment complex I can recommend the Villa Concha (google it) in Puerto Pollensa, which you can book privately or through either Falcon or Thomas Cook package holidays. It's in a good location, has a pool, the staff are friendly and helpful. With a young family I'd suggest you ask for an apartment that's that's all on one level (ie not a duplex) and probably even better on the ground floor.

I realize this may be a bit too late, however there is a group of hotels on the island that range from resorts to smaller bed and breakfast type places. They have one hotel located right in Palma's old quarter which is a restored house called Hotel San Lorenzo, its right in the middle of town, but a little farther from the beach. You can check out their website here

Travel Tips for Majorca Island

Countryside

by barbskie

The sightseeing excursions around the island.
I'd love to take part with the hiking trail tour in the Traumuntana mountains. I think it is the reason for planning the next trip. (???) Our trip was a birthday present from my husband and thus made it very, very memorable. Those beautiful, impressing scenic views of the island, long long boulevards, its fine cuisine, hierbas and the people at the hotel bar.

Local Liquor

by nigelw6443

When I travel I love to try the local specialties whether it be food or drink. In Majorca there is a large industry for liquors and often there are tours to the factories along with sampling of the products.

There is a company called Tunel and they specialise in local liquors such as a drink called Hierbas, which is native to Majorca and is made from special herbs. The drink comes in three varieties, Dulces which is sweet, Seco which is dry and Mix which is a mixture of the two and of course my favourite.

Most local bars will offer a small glass on the house with your bill.

Another way of drinking Hierbas is to have this on ice with your Cafe solo after a meal. Whenever we went for a drink or a meal an after meal drink or a shot with the bar owner was always a Hierbas!

Food

by hundertmorgen

Traditional food is being rediscovered in the Balearics. It varies from island to island but reflects the cuisine of Catalonia, with its combinations of sweet and savoury. Pork is a main ingredient, and vegetable dishes and soups are also typical fare. Menorca's capital, MaĆ³, lays claim to the invention of mayonnaise, which is often served with succulent fish and shellfish. Mallorca is the home of the Savoury sobrassada, a delicious spicy sausage, and the sweet pastry known as ensaimada.

Typical Local Dishes
Huevos a la sollerica are fried eggs served on top of smooth, red sobrassada sausage, served with a pea sauce.

Langosta a la parrilla partners spiny lobster with the local mayonnaise, which is made with eggs and olive oil.

Berenjenas rellenas are aubergines stuffed with onions, herbs and bread. Tomatoes and pork are also often added.

Tumbet, made in a brown earthenware preixera or casserole, combines layers of peppers and tomato with potato.

Coca de trampĆ³ is a pizza style dish, topped with a selection of fresh vegetables, especially onions and peppers.

Ensaimada is a spiral shaped yeast bun from Mallorca, and can be eaten either for breakfast or as a tea-time snack.

Festivals

by jol1y

We always try to get to the opening of the Arta Festival.
You will not find it advertised in the papers.
Early August for 2 weeks. Fireworks, audience participation, music.
Don't wear your best clothes they 'will' get burnt.
This festival shows you the true spirit of Majorca.
