Not fantastic

by TripAdvisor Member dochalli

Myself and my wife stayed here for 2 weeks during the world cup.The Balmoral is part of a 3 hotel complex and is certainly the poor relative of the family. It was our first, and last, holiday of going all inclusive. OK, from the top, the rooms were kept clean everyday, there is no air-con but there is a fan on the ceiling, which in June is of little use. The shower in our room did not work and the toilet cistern broke on the second day. The hotel consists of 7 floors and has a hollow middle which as you can imagine works as a loud speaker for any late arrivals or rowdy guests. Swearing and loud door bangs were not uncommon as were kids running up and down the corriders. The food consists of salad, veal, pork, fish every lunch and dinner, though you can survive on chips and gravy. Breakfast was ok and the only time you could have coffee but the glasses for water,OJ etc were only slightly bigger than a thimble and i am not joking the same size as shot glasses. The bar seved Cruzcampo beer and is ok but not when it is served in a childs party size plastic cup. What is the point in that? Two gulps and its finished and then return to the queue. Not my idea of fun. I also got told off from the barman when i attempted to get 2 rounds at the same time. The entertainment was as far as i am concerned very amatuerish, and thats flattering. Attempting to watch the world cup was also a bit of a joke. There was a large screen tv in a big seated area but it was surrounded by pillars so getting a view was the first problem, the second was no air-con, the third was the ammount of sweating because of the lack of the second. On one day we were visited by a big group of Spanish tourists and what a difference that made. Now we were treated like third class citizens and i gather there is no Spanish word for queue because they do not know what that means. Because of the above we spent most of our time away from the hotel, sunbathing at the sister hotel, which is right at the sea, or at the back of block d, which has a pool also but which most of the guests were unaware of. Drinking in the town centre is cheap, there are a few 2 for 1 offers and a very good chinese, China house i think it was called but then i was forced into spending a lot more money than i expected because of the state of the Sol Balmoral. I would not recommend.

Good value

Stayed for a week in September 2005. Purchased direct from the Sol web site. Had stayed the previous year for a week.
The weather was good in both years and the outside bar was open, and the terraces were used. If the weather was bad, then i do not know where all the guests would sit inside.
Good value for an all inclusive. Food above average, always something for every taste. Fresh fish, and meat, both cooked on a grill for you. The dining room can become busy and noisy. So get in early or late.
Rooms basic, no tv, but clean.
Entertainment is good. They cater for all ages and work hard. Every night there was entertainment either by the staff or outside groups. If you did not like what was on there is another Sol Hotel within 300 meters with other shows.
The resort is about 60 miles from Palma Airport.
The resort centre is about 800 meters away, but is showing its age.
This is a good family hotel. But the teenagers will be bored.

would not return to balmoral

by A TripAdvisor Member

have just returned from the balmoral and would not recommend hotel or resort .The hotel was clean but drinks were the cheapest spirit on the islands and even then watered down and served in little plastic cups! If you like pork and veal you will like this hotel served everyday in some form. food left over from lunch was served again in the evening. The snackbar was a no go area and all food was just left overs from breakfast lunch and tea and was cold.If you wanted to take any food from restaurant snackbar you were not allowed signs were on all tables PROHIBITED TO TAKE FOOD OUT OF RESTAURANT if you did you would be charged extra. If you want to go to this resort go to the hotel samoa. The beach is advertised 500mts away but you cant get down the very steep cliiff at least 1000meters down nobody used this beach and had to use another beach 20 mins\walk away.

Great Holiday

by TripAdvisor Member markyboyo

Stayed on kids first week of summer. After reading mixed reports on this site felt a little nervous as we booked in.
Room a bit small for 4 people, but as we only slept in there didn't matter, the ceiling fan did cool the room. Our room over looked the road, but as this only leads to another sol hotel it was very quiet. Breakfast choice was extensive, even my vegeterian child was happy here, resturant was very tidy, staff very polite.
Lunch time again large choice, freshly cooked meat and fish every day, local style foods and some variations on english, all looked and tasted lovely.
Dinner again plenty of choice, we had no complaints about the food or resturant at all during our stay.
We didn't use the snack facilities at all, who would need to with what was on offer at all meal times.
The pools were great, busy most of the day, we used the lower pool all the time, slightly quieter, there is a bar here, but when we stayed they were only serving soft drinks, tea, coffee and ice creams. This pool they were allowing inflatables to be used, although that could change in the season. Entertainment was ok, kids loved it, again as it was first real busy week i assume this will improve. Couple of the men doing the entertaining are manic and funny, the "Travesty" night they done was very very funny, although not suitable for young children, but even then most young children wouldn't really have a clue, and would find it funny.
To answer other points raised by others:-
Drinks from bars are in plastic cups, but as 99% of people were outside, this made sense. Not overly big (250ml), the measures were large. Local spirts, but really the same as we get in local co op etc. Tasted the same as our spirts so no complaints.
All the staff we dealt with were polite, so no problems at all there.
We would go back, no worries. We had a very relaxing holiday.

Where to stay

by epallaron

I've seen a few hotel deals in Manacor, but the Sol Balmoral is a 3 *** and the Columbo is not available in early December. Has anyone stayed at another hotel in Manacor and what is the weather like in early December?
