a room with a view..

Had a lovely relaxing week at the Cala Vinas Hotel, Majorca. Having read some of the bad reports, became a bit dispondant, but they very soon disappeared on arrival, as non of these were justified in my opinion. I travelled alone & went on a B & B basis, and was given a room near to the ground floor, but after my 1st night changed rooms due to a continual buzzing noise outside, probably from the powerbox on the wall. There was no quibbles & i was then put on the 5th floor.
All the rooms have the most spectacular views across the cove & sea towards Palma, and are clean, tidy & well equppied, although it had no kettle (but took my own anyhow) and the hotel itself is right on the sea's edge. The food at breakfast was very good, and the choice was diverse & tasted good. The restaurant was very clean & tidy & staff helpful, and I even managed to escape with the odd 'doggy bag or two'!
The outdoor pool was very nice, and although heated, took ya breath away on plunging in..there was also a bar nearby & plenty of sun-loungers. just a very short stroll away was the small beach, which was lovely, but i'm sure could get very crowded in peak season. IF i had to pick a down side to the area, it was that the entertainment, bars & restaurants were limited & you had to take a 15-20 minute stroll into nearby Magaluf\Palma Nova to get this, although these resorts are not everyones cupof tea due to the lager lout reputation they have been labelled with..
The hotel is a good base for exploring the rest of the island, and if your looking for a very relaxed, charming & picturesque area with a nice hotel & surroundings, this is the place for you.
Overall,I had a very enjoyable holiday & would definately go back to the same hotel in the future.
Fantastic Hotel

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights (4th/5th May 2007) and had a great time. A group of 7 friends (Age range mid 20's to mid 40's) for a short break. Arrived 11.45pm & checked into our rooms on the 8th floor - what a fantastic view! The moon was shimmering over the med, the pool directly below us was illuminated and the sandy beach to the right. All rooms spotlessly clean and fresh. Went down to bar to revive ourselves only to find that it shut at midnight! Never mind, over the road to one of only two restaurants - The Caracas - where we found friendly, efficient service and staff.
The resort itself was very quiet and peaceful with 2 supermarkets (that we found) an 1 bar (The Sports Bar.)
Breakfast in the hotel was fine with lots of choice and all food hot & fresh.
No problems with sunbeds - only about 15-20 people around the pool. Pool bar service was fine but they informed us that no snack bar service available until later on in the season. (Back to the Caracas where the food was very acceptable & very reasonably priced (4 euros for a toasted chicken sandwich).
Evening meal in the Hotel was again hot & fresh with plenty of choice. Entertainment in the bar was a Bee Gees tribute band of a higher quality than some I have seen at home.
When checking out on Sunday, we asked to keep one of our rooms until 7pm & the maid kindly provided us with 7 clean towels to use.
All in all a fantastic weekend in a fantastic location.
My kind of Hotel

Ended up staying in this hotel by pure accident. Was due to be staying in hotel in the centre of Magaluf (all night partying on your doorstep), celebrating my nephew's 21st birthday with family and a few of his mates.
Me being in my late thirties im no spring chicken, but I knew before I left what I was likely to be letting myself in for.
Just after arriving was told couldnt stay at that hotel due to leaking water main or something (should have just told us truth - overbooked).
We was told that we can stay in nice, recently refurbished hotel but the hotel was much further out. To apease the situation was told the hotel would cover all taxis into Magaluf. The hotel would be a 4 star and would have its own beach. (hotelier was selling it well, trying to soothe the situation)
When we eventualy arrived at the hotel the rest of the lads were all moaning. The place was just too far away from the action for their liking. My first impressions was what a lovely, tranquil place with a fantistic view of a beautiful cove.
The place looked very modern, fresh, with a hint of sophistication to it.
When the lads got used to the idea that this would be their base, we eventualy checked into our rooms - Fantastic
We was put into appartments. The rooms were huge, the layout was very contemporary with LCD Televisions, two air con units, and a lovely fitted kitchen.
The lads soon warmed to this place and after a few heavy nights out, appreciated the tranquility as a means of escape.
After returning from the largest dance club in europe (BCM) at 7am, the serenity was total bliss!
With lovely views, small beach, pools, facilites, gym and overall location, this will be on my shortlist for future holls with my girlfriend.

any comments on using the big read double decker sightseeing bus; ease of use cost etc. I am on a cruise ship and am trying to avoid the high costs of excursions, but want to get a taste of the area

How long will you have on the island?
The city of Palma has plenty to fill a few hours if your time is limited.
You might like to look at the Palma de Mallorca Travel Pages on VT - just type it into the destination search box at the top right of the page.
Have a great cruise and enjoy whatever you can see of Palma!

Well - that's quite a decent time to do something worthwhile in Palma.
You are right to be aware of the need to be back at the ship on time.
So by allowing yourself plenty of time to get to and from the dock you should have time to see the old town of Palma and the Cathedral, the shops, have lumch and afternoon refreshmnets.
That way you can take your time and get a real feel for the Capital of the island in a relaxed, leisurely way.
Also don't forget to look up the Tips for things to do on the VT Travel Guide.
Have a good cruise and enjoy Palma!

You want to know about the tourist bus, here is all the information you need it about it:
http://www.mallorcatour.com/palma/infopalma_ing.html
As you can see, price is 13 euros/adult and 6.50 for children. This bus is great if you will be short time on the city. I used the services of this bus on Milan, Sevilla and Barcelona and my advice is to use it, you will have a quick look of the city, and can hop on and off withou problems. There is a bus stop right on the dock when you leave the ship
