Please help

by Robynm.nz

There is three of us heading over for a week in June, but i am so stuck as to what part of the island to stay on.
We are really keen to experience some good cuisine, decent nightlife, and beautiful beaches or coves.
Can anyone suggest a part of the island to stay on or a certain area.
I would also love to know of any markets on the island.

Thanks so much guys!!!

I think everone will suggest different areas. I stayed in El Arenal, I liked the German kitch of it. Lots of beer gardens and nightlife. i went down town to see the othe night life, very worthwhile. You should rent a car for a day and do a tour of the island. Good prices on Mallorcan pottery in the North West area.

I would highly recommend the area of Puerto Pollensa in the north of the island. The town itself is situated in a beautiful bay, has a fine beach with lots of water sports, a lovely promenade called the 'pine walk' and tons of good restaurants around the town square and the promenade. The best beach on the island is a boat ride away at Formentor. There is a market in the town every Wednesday. There is a huge market every Tues and Sun in the nearby old town of Alcudia and another one in the nearby town of Pollensa. You can also get the bus to Inca where one of the biggest markets on the island is held, I think it's on Thursday but check this. Slightly off the beaten track are the beaches of San Pere and San Joan nearer to Alcudia in the area of Manresa/Mal Pas. Day trips could include a visit to the monastery of Lluch, not too far to drive or can be done on public transport. Also the caves at Campanent are a short drive away. There are plenty of organised day trips with companies such as 'No Frills Tours'. The tourist office is on the seafront near the bus stop/taxi rank, they can supply all the info about local attractions.
There are plenty of independent apartments available to rent on www.puertopollensa.com which also gives lots of tourist info. The only aspect of Puerto Pollensa that I cannot vouch for is the nightlife, in all honesty it's mainly restaurants and bars, there are nightclubs but I've never been but the nearby area of Puerto Alcudia (a bus or taxi ride away)would probably have a livlier nightlife. If you want a holiday in a beautiful place with lots of amenities I would strongly recommend Puerto Pollensa, you'll be so tired from all the activities that you won't need nightclubs!

Travel Tips for Palma de Mallorca

Beaches to choose from in Palma

by russian_yaz

Hello there... I´ve seen in forums a very typical question about nice beaches in Palma, near the fun or in the contrary, really lonely and peacefull... here is my tip...

Looking for fun? The first place that comes to my mind are the classical Arenal and Magaluff, only 10km from Palma but they are really over crowded, I don´t recommend them, only if U´re looking for bars and discos all day long. Other good place is Cala Blava. It´s a nice place around 25km from palma, with nice not so crowded beaches and U have the city nearby. There are also Palma Nova, Portal Nous that could be other choices, about 15km from Palma. There are two other places, but in the other side of the island, Port Alcudia and Port Pollenca, with lot of bars and nigh clubs to choose from.

If looking for nice quiet places.... Port Andratx is a good place, 30km from Palma. It has some bars around where to have drinks and enjoy the sea breeze. Other good choice could be Sant Elm, is a very peacefull place, with a nice beach but is not so close to Palma, is about 40km and not so much night life. If U rent a car U will have many more options. Cala Millor, Cala Figuera, Cala Ratjada, Cala Murada, Cala Mallorca and may other places.

As U can see, there are many options, hope the info will be usefull.

Chopin

The village where Georges Sand and Frédéric Chopin transfer to take refuge during their winters.
Chopins being sick, the malorcains fearing the contagion, had constantly repulsed the couple of lovers.

When in Rome ( or Palma )

by Tricky_Dicky69 about Piccola Italia

Large Italian restaurant located on Paseo Maritimo with views of the Marina and Palma Cathedral. Lots of tables inside and some outside but these are between the pavement and the busy main road. We had a table just inside which was perfect as it has fresh air but less noise than dining "al fresco". Service was good. All dishes that we tried from the large and varied menu were nice. Wine was well served and reasonably priced.

Worth a try.

Tour round the island

by tashka

This tour includes traveling by bus, boat and train and takes the whole day. This is a good chance to get the general impression of the island in general, not only the beach part of it. You will go by bus to a monastery (a new-built one) in the mountains, then go down to the sea by bus, where you will have a chance to have lunch and to have some rest at the sea - you can choose the beach at the small port or walk through a tunnel to another beach. After that you will take a boat to another port and take a tiny train from there. The train goes through chilly tunnels and over beautiful valleys. Actually, I liked the train part most!

If you go to this tour, don't forget a swimming suit.

The price was 60 euro (50% for kids).

Processions on Holy Week

by russian_yaz

Spain is a very religious country. Through out it´s history the kings and the government was allways helping and supporting the Vatican. Nowdays U´ll see not only lot of churchs and cathedralas but also in special days, processions.

During Holy Week U can see procession of all kinds. 24 of march, 2005, 3 days ago, I went to st Los Olms, near plaza Espanya and stand there for almost 3 hours. It was worth seeying. People told me that in other cities like Sevilla or Andalucia are prittier and better. But nontheless, I enjoyed the evening. Many people watching and waiting with religous fervor. Many kids, dads, moms and grandmas with tipical religous suits folowing the processions.
