Palma this December/January?

by e2traveller

I want to visit Mallorca Island this December/January more specifically during Christmas holidays, will it be the best time to visit there? http://www.majorcainspain.co.uk/weather.html says it will be the worst but now I have booked my trip. Please advise if it will be really bad to in fact bear the cancellation cost? And if it is, then which place particularly in Spain will be worth visiting during this season?
Also, if there is any airport other then Palma De Mallorca? I want to go to Santa Ponsa in fact, how long it will take to get there from Palma if there is no other airport?

Thanks in advance

I was in Palma during the first week of January in 2007 and could happily walk around in long sleeve tops. It won't be T-shirt weather but I had 3 days of sunshine and it was lovely.

Of course, Palma is one of our own (UK) "Snowbird" destinations - a location visited for long durations by retired people during their own winter season.

Can't help with your other questions.

Have a great trip!

WE HAVE BEEN TO MALLORCA AT THAT TIME OF YEAR FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS.
WE GO OVER THE NEW YEAR BEFORE THE KIDS ARE BACK IN SCHOOL.
ITS NOT GOING TO BE HOT BUT WE HAD MANY DAYS WALKING ABOUT IN JUST JEANS & TSHIRT & HAVE NEVER HAD ANY RAIN. YOU WILL NEED A LIGHT JACKET AT NIGHT. BOOK HOTELS WITH INDOOR SWIMING POOL FOR THE KIDS NO PROBLEM.
WE FIND IT BETTER TO HIRE A CAR AS THE TAXI TRANSFERS SEEM A RIP OFF & CARS ARE QUITE CHEAP.
WE FOUND ON OUR TRAVELS THAT A LOT OF RESORTS SHUT DOWN AT THIS TIME OF YEAR EG (MAGALUF, ALCUDIA)
RESORTS ON THE OTHER SIDE STAY OPEN (CALA MILLOR, PORTO CRITSO).
SANTA PONSA WOULD BE A GOOD CHOICE. WE STAYED HERE LAST YEAR. LOT OF BARS SHOPS & EATING PLACES STILL OPEN. I WOULD SAY ABOUT 70%.
PALMA AIRPORT TO SANTA PONSA ABOUT 30MINS BY CAR.
HOPE THIS HELPS.

Others' experiences about winter vacations in a such variable climate as the Balearics have is only anecdote, not facts. Mallorca MAY have very pleasant weather during winter, but it MAY be very cold, rainy and VERY windy. Snow is not unheard of (and very fun for locals), even it usually only snows once per season, and just for a few hours. Weather changes fast, so no prediction over a week in advance (sometimes over a few days in advance) will be accurate.
You can look for averages at

BTW, there is only one airport in the island

I'd say the island in plenty of possibilities even under bad weather, but if you want a "secure" sun destination maybe is not the best choice. Is a matter of luck, if you are happy having a b-plan in case of cold and rain, you can have a perfect vacation.

Over Christmas time, you have more chances of sun and warm weather in the Andalucian coast (even I had there one of the coldest Christmas of my life, given then bad insulation of the apartments). However, I'd say the only Spanish territory that can guarantee sunny warm Christmas are the Canary Islands (and not all of them)

Es Baluard

This is a modern and contemporary art museum located in the old defence bastion of Palma.

I bring this tip for some reason: You can enjoy some sculptures outside the venue itself, there is a bar where you can relax having a drink or coffee, and the views of the bay and the sunset are great.

El Pozo Restaurante in Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca
We had a birthday dinner for my mother at the restaurant. The restaurant manager and chef made special arrangements and provided a birthday cake for dessert. The restaurant had a very wonderful rustic atmosphere. The night we ate the weather was rainy and cold and the restaurant was warmed by a fireplace. They also had a Flamenco/Gypsy guitarist and singer entertaining the guests. Sea Bass with Mallorcan Seasoning.

Sa Calobra

nice street to do... big turn to go down to the sea...
It should be one the most big mountain street in Europe.
It's nice to look the street from the high.. you can see "a snake" along the mountain and a lot of cars and buses travel on...

El Corte Ingles

This is a Spanish department store, and, if you've never been to one, they're much nicer than your typical American store. They have everything, including great souveniers of Toledo gold, fans, castanetes, and other typically Spanish items. They also give out free maps of Palma which are EXCELLENT.
