We had only two nights in Palma so wanted somewhere central.
Nothing could be more central than this.
Top of the Born, less than a ten minute walk to the Cathedral and marina.
A two star hotel (only because of no lift) this is a converted 'nobles' mansion complete with typical Majorcan 'courtyard.
Some of the rooms are impressive - we were originaly in the one featured on their website
and in the picture below.
We did ask for a move on the second night as it had been a bit noisy and we were tired.
Slightly more expensive are those rooms facing the inner courtyard (worth the extra).
Cold buffet breakfast on the ground floor with access to tables in the courtyard - still being used although this was the end of November.
Unique Quality: Worth the experience.
The lobby, courtyard and fittings make it a unique stay.
Staff very helpful and friendly.
Directions: Go up the passeig de born to the place Rei Joan Carlos.
The hotel is down the alleyway on the left hand side of C & A
this hotel is fantastic a 16th palace that to day is a hotel ,fresco`s on the ceiling ,grand marble staircases, luxury at the best
you can dream about beeing the marquris that used to live here
the taxi will drop you off on the main street ,a very short walk down a narrow alley to the grand glass fronted entrance hall
the rooms are nice and clean, air con
Unique Quality: very centeral near the la rambler and cathredal
We had the best few days in the Hotel Born, which is based in the very heart of the Old Town and suitably distant from the stacked racks of tourists in the beachfront holiday apartments
The atmosphere was very relaxed and we were never bothered by anyone.
(The receptionist even lent us his umbrella when a few drops of rain appeared).
The hotel is a converted 16th century old palace of the Marquis of Ferrandell (Ca'n Maroto), restored in the 18th Century with a classic majorican yard full of palm trees for shade. It's tucked away on the edge of the tiny narrow streets of the old part of Palma.
The rooms all have bathroom and lovely traditional green shutters., our room looked out over the courtyard. Most furnishings are antique and there can be quite a spooky atmosphere at times which can be amusing! There is a strange room on the upper floors, with a long, 'altar-like' table and candlesticks (ooh er!)
The excellent breakfasts were traditional Mallorcan food, wonderful little savoury canopes, fruit and yougurts, cheeses and strong black coffee. Evey day there was something different in the way of savoury pastries and it was always very fresh.
Unique Quality: Fantastic 16th century building.
Shadey courtyard.
Good breakfasts.
Relaxed.
Very convenient for just about everything.
Great for a romantic long weekend.
A little bit pricey for a 2 star, but still reasonably priced and worth every penny.
Ring or email direct for best prices.
Handy tips :
Don't be alarmed if a rather strange green beam of light appears letting out a strange sound in the middle of the night, it is just the air conditioning!
Also remember, two sets of shutters in bedroom - So if lying naked on the bed and opening the lower shutter for air, people in the courtyard could get a birds eye view of your bare behind ; )
The hotel welcomes children, but I think it is better for adults as there are no child facilities.
Directions: In the heat of the Old Town, just steps from shops, cafes, transport etc...
I recommend the very beautiful Hotel Born located in the old part of the town right in the center and where it is very convenient to reach the harbour, the shopping area and most of the sights in walking distance.
Unique Quality: Its romantic 'patio' (the yard) is one of the sights of Palma where you will have a calm and nice breakfast in the morning under palm trees before you get part of the tourist crowds.
The Hotel is a 16th century old palace of the Marquis of Ferrandell (Can Maroto), restored in the 18th century . This place is very old which implies that you also have to ignore some inconveniences.
Directions: Center, near Passeig Borne and shopping street Jaume 3
My friend and I will be in Mallorca next Thursday-Sunday. Puro is booked, can anyone recommend a hip/trendy hotel that is walking distance (or a short ride) to great shopping (not the cheezy tourist kind), restaurants and nightlife? We would like to be on the beach if that is possible.
Any thoughts on what to do , etc. while we are there is much appreciated!
Allie
Beach and shopping areas don't really mix, that I remember(Palma trend). The downtown Palma area will have the best shopping but, the out lying areas have the best beaches.
The nightlife, in my memory is el Arenal and downtown Palma. There is a great walking street in Palma wit fantastic bars and restaurants.
El Arenal is a kitchy German area with LOTS of pubs bars and restaurants.
There is another area that is prodominently English between Palma and el Arenal but, I don't remember the name.
Thank you Barbara. The Hotel Born looks like a nice hotel
