More about Catalonia Majorica
Excellent stay in Palma!
We recently returned from a 10 day holiday in Palma and stayed at the Catalonia Majorica. This hotel is excellent with very good facilities and is in an ideal location. Anyone who is relatively fit will find the hill an easy climb and if you rent a car (like we did) you can park right outside the door of the hotel - as long as you have your rental badge showing. The staff were always friendly and helpful and the buffet breakfast contained everything you could possibly want to start your day. Palma is beautiful with lots to do and plenty places nearby the hotel to eat and drink. As this hotel is slightly of the main road. there's no traffic noise to keep you awake at night. We thoroughly recommend this hotel and would go back in a flash!
Lovely hotel wonderful four days holiday
We spent a wonderful four days holiday at the lovely "Catalonia Majorica" in February and have no complaints whatsoever, we would certainly recommend it and hope to return. I always change rooms if I am disappointed but we were extremely lucky and the room allocated to us was well designed, quiet, comfortable, modern and attractively decorated with a spectacular view over the Bay of Palma. The breakfast was excellent and lovely to sit at the window looking at the panoramic view and sunshine after the dull London weather we had left behind. The lovely romantic restaurant a little further down the hill "Porto Pi" is excellent with splendid cuisine as was the lunch at the lovely glass fronted restaurant on top of the Royal Yacht Club on the harbourfront which we found by chance on Valentine's Day. The trip to Soller on the little wooden train going through the mountains was also a nice thing to do and the pretty little seaside destination would have been good for a day strolling but Palma beckoned and we returned after a couple of hours to our chosen resort. Most of our days were spent strolling along the water front and gazing out to sea watching the boats and having lunch at the restaurant cafes facing the Bay. I think the "Daumesil" was the name of our favourite. If that name is not correct you will soon spot it with the umbrellas and tables outside near the sea. The old town is lovely to stroll around and we enjoyed the modern art museum but as time was limited, nothing beats people watching and the tranquility of the seaside cafes. I should also say the hotel staff were always friendly and helpful to us and although we only ate at the hotel restaurant twice, the food was healthy, delicious and good value and the view at night splendid. Another treat was the panoramic view from the rooftop balcony outside the bar area where it was relaxing to have a drink in the evening. The fact that the hotel was not right in the town centre was a plus as it made the holiday more tranquil and only a few minutes walk to the waterfront or as you know a 5 euros cab ride when you are tired. In all definitely to be recommended. Wish I was there right now!
Pearls in Manacor
At the entrance of the Majorica Pearls factory we found this statue that I presume that is from the founder of the pearl industry in Manacor.
One of the best known goods from this island: the fake pearls, on this day, before we arrive at Porto Cristo to see the caves, we stop at Manacor to see the pearl industry...
This picture was taken in the factory outlet, where I bought something for Ana...
Below Avergage, NOT 4 STAR!
First with the positives. The views are great and the pool is nice.
The fact that the hotel is not in the middle of Palma can be looked at as a negative but we enjoyed the long walks.
Now, with the problems. The hotel staff is not very helpful. When asking what time the castle bellvar is open to, the response was, "I don't know" and then we were told the wrong time anyway. Whenever we had a question for the staff I was made to feel as if I was a bother.
While checking out, the receptionist actually got up and started doing some other paper work...all while I was standing there and the taxi waiting outside.
Twice I had faxes sent to me from my office and was given them the next day! The same with phone messages.
and the housekeepers somehow forget to sweep under the beds.
Overall, I would go to Mallorca again, but not to the Hotel Majorica (it has nice views but it is definetely not a 4 star hotel).
Not a 4 Star Hotel
This hotel is on top of a very steep hill opposite the Port of Palma. It is a long long way from the centre of Palma so I would not recommend it for visitors who don't have a car. We did have a car and parking around the hotel is a bit hit n miss ....... had to park in an adjoining street and driving up to the hotel is not for the feint hearted as the roads are very steep and narrow.
Rooms are ok, not particularly clean - we moved our twin beds apart as we were two ladies travelling together and found quite a layer of dust underneath. Always always ask for a front facing room - we were allocated a rear and the outlook was depressing. The hotel staff were very obliging and moved us to a front facing room as soon as one became available - stunning views right across the bay of Palma. Our room was always tidied fairly early in the day but other clientelle said that their rooms were still not ready at 4.30 pm. It was winter and there were very few staff on - possibly the problem.
Most of the clients of this hotel were independent travellers booked through the internet - and indeed if you book direct with this hotel you will beat the deals available on the net. Very friendly and lots of English people staying there when we did.
The bar is quite lively in the evening but ........ and this is a big but....... they cook bar meals in the bar area and the smell of hot oil and smoky atmosphere is just too much to sit in. No doubt in Summer months the windows and doors are open which would alleviate this problem.
All in all not a bad hotel - dinner was ok but would not rate it at 4star - more like a 3star.
On top of a mountain.
There was a sewerage problem in some of the rooms and in the dining room. Smell was very bad at times. Could not say in any way this is a 4* hotel. The hills (2) caused problems for most guests.
Stunning views, but a long way out of town!
No problems with hotel. Typical modern hotel lacking atmosphere but no complaints with standard of cleanliness, etc. Vast choice at buffet breakfast. Yes it's on a hill but if you walk up from the Porto Pi side the gradient is more gradual and the road wider. Biggest problem is that it is a considerable distance from Palma centre. The compensation is the stunning view - make sure you get a sea / harbour view. There is an excellent bus service - no 1 or no 3 go into Palma - which we used despite having a car. The Mondo Cane Restaurant down the road is excellent and reasonably priced!
We stayed at this Hotel for one week during Feb 2005, we found it to be clean and friendly, the breakfast was good value with plenty of choice and the evening meals, generally buffet style, again to be good value, however slightly dull.
Overall we were not disappointed with this hotel bearing in mind the tariff we paid, you could do a lot worse
PALMA DE MALLORCA 2006 SUE'S PARTY
"HOTEL MAJORICA, PALMA CITY"
EVERY YEAR AROUND THE 4th DECEMBER (SUE'S BITHDAY) A CROWD OF OUR FRIENDS GO ON A CITY BREAK, AFTER LAST YEARS MINUS 10 DEGREES THE DECISION WAS PALMA.
AND WHY NOT, £35.00 RETURN INCLUDING ALL TAXES WITH BMI FROM MANCHESTER, 2 & A BIT HOURS LATER AND INTO A SUN KISSED PALMA @ 30 DEGREES. TOPPED OFF WITH 4 NIGHTS AT THE FOUR STAR HOTEL MAJORICA FOR £25.00 A NIGHT INCLUDING A HUGE BUFFET BREAKFAST. A GREAT CHOICE ESPECIALLY AS WHILE WE WERE AWAY MANCHESTER WAS NEARLY WASHED OR BLOWN AWAY BY STORMS FOR THE WHOLE 4 DAYS.
THE HOTEL WAS SUPERB, THOUGH IT WAS UP & UP AGAIN WHEN WALKING BACK FROM TOWN, FOR THEM THAT ARE NOT TOO HAPPY WALKING UPHILL, A TAXI DOES THE JOB FOR 6ish EURO'S. THE HOTEL DOES HAVE SOME KIND OF LIFT SYSTEM TO THE LOWER STREET LEVELS BUT IT WAS NOT WORKING WHILE WE WERE THERE. THE BEST VIEWS ARE OVER THE HARBOUR SO ASK FOR A HARBOUR VIEW WHEN BOOKING IF POSSIBLE, WE BOOKED OUR ROOMS WITH TRAVELREPUBLIC.COM & IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO PREBOOK ROOMS BUT THE HOTEL WAS NOT BUSY SO THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. THE ROOMS WERE CLEAN & TIDY & TOTALLY ADEQUATE, THE BED WAS COMFORTABLE, WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED, WE ONLY SLEPT THERE, THE TRUTH IS THE WONDERFUL VIEW WAS ONLY ENJOYED FOR A FEW BRIEF MOMENTS, I DO NOT GO ON HOLIDAY TO SIT IN A HOTEL ROOM.
THE HOTEL HAS TWO SWIMMING POOLS A HEATED INDOOR & A LARGER ONE OUT ON THE TERRACE WHICH IS OVERLOOKED BY THE BAR TERRACE.
WE DID NOT TRY THE HOTEL RESTAURANT IN THE EVENING PREFERING THE WALK TO SAMPLE THE SITES, SOUNDS, FOOD & DRINK IN THE TOWN, THERE WAS NO DISAPPOINTMENTS & LATE NIGHTS.
THE BUSES GO ALL OVER THE CITY, ARE NUMEROUSE & CHEAP, TAXIS ARE PLENTIFUL & ARE ONLY SLIGHTLY MORE EXPENSIVE
PALMA IS NOT THE MOST PICTURESQUE SPANISH CITY, TOURISM HAS DEMANDED THAT MUCH STORIED WHITE CLIFFS OF HOTELS CROWD THE COASTLINE BUT VENTURE AWAY FROM THE FRONT, LEAVE BEHIND THE STUNNING LOOKING MILLIANAIRE YACHTS THAT NEVER SEEM TO SET SAIL & YOU WILL FIND ITS ARAB HEART. THE CATHERDAL TAKES NO SEARCHING IT CAN NOT BE AVOIDED & DESPITE THE BEST EFFORTS OF THE CATHOLIC MASONS THE MOSQUE CAN BE SEEN BENEATH. INSIDE IS A RELATIVE MUSEUM OF RELIGIOUS ARTIFACTS BUT STRANGELY WITH A WONDERFUL WORK OF ART BY GAUDI, WORTH THE ENTRY MONEY ALONE.
