6 hours in Palma de Mallorca
by collegeprof
My husband and I will be cruising the Mediterranean in May and will be stopping from 7am to 1pm in Palma de Mallorca. We would prefer to "freelance" rather than sign up for the cruise ship tours. What would you suggest? What are the "must sees" which we could gently visit while spending time strolling and enjoying the city with plenty of time for a non-touristy lunch? Oh! And does anyone have recommendations for a lovely lunch? Thanks! Marilyn

There is plenty to do within walking distance of the pier. We "freelanced" on our cruise and did some research before we left on what is within walking distance that we wanted to see. When we got hungry we just found a place that looked good and grabbed something.

Hi
You've got loads of time in Palma.
The town is pretty small and there are some street entertainers there for you to see.
A coach tour would not be worth the money in my opinion.
I would do the same.
Have fun

Travel Tips for Palma de Mallorca
Sand's sculptures
by ncfg
Walking on the beach we can admire lots of things: sunset, the sea, people ...
Well, but this beach had something special, what i call art made of sand.
I just took this photo, but every day I saw a different sculpture made of sand. Beautiful isn't it?
Day Trips

Once in Palma de Mallorca, if you have tome, I recommend to visit some other places not far from the city (the distances within the island are not long actually):
- Valldemossa: 20 kms.: An old Monastery that was inhabited by Carthusian monks and where Frédéric Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1.838-1.839.
- Soller: 25 kms.: Beautiful village.
- Port d’Andratx: 34 kms.
- Manacor: 50 kms.: Important centre of pearl production.
- Alcudia beach: 57 kms.: Beautiful bay and beaches
- Drach Caves: 68 kms. (www.cuevasdeldrach.com)
- Artá Caves: 78 kms. (www.cuevasdearta.com)
Resting on Porto Cristo
by NunoF about La Marina
Although we saw some other places on the main square of Porto Cristo, near the beach, we found this little cafe with an interior garden... The food wasn't bad at all, and for an hamburguer with eggs and chips, a pizza and 2 drinks we payed EUR 14,00
Palma's Town Hall ~ "Ajuntament"
by starship
Not far from Le Seu Cathedral and located on the Placa de Cort is the "Ajuntament" or "Town Hall" building. I thought this was a beautiful building because of its perfect proportions, graceful balcony and the ornate window and door pediments. The added color of the 3 flags above the main door and the large clock known as "En Figuera" on the facade of the 3rd story just add to its interest. The Ajuntament was built between 1649 - 1680, described in tourist literature as "Baroque with Mannerist" features, was once the seat of the important personages of the Old Kingdom of Mallorca ( "Medina Mayurqa"). Today it serves as the seat of Palma's Town Council.
Although the Ajuntament faces the lovely Placa de Cort with its beautiful and ancient olive tree, the near side ( presumably part of the same building) reflect a different style of architecture which is just as beautiful but with one extraordinary addition----massive, dark wooden doors are fitted into an arched doorway with the most exquisitely designed hinges and handles. I know that sculpted bronze doors in other European towns such as Florence are quite renowned and are genuinely artisitic masterpieces; but to me these particular Mallorcan doors (click on 3rd accompanying picture for closer view) are somehow even more beautiful because of their elegance of design.
Palma's Cathedral
by NunoF
In 1229, James I, the Conqueror was sailing to Mallorca when he was surprised by a tempest. The king then promissed if the expedition reached the destiny he built a cathedral in honour of the Virgin Mary. The work begun on the year of 1230 on the site of a former mosque and it only end on the 17th century.
After we payed the entrance fee (€ 3,50 each) we saw some guards saying that we couldn't take any pictures in the church, but when we enter the cathedral we saw an huge number of persons taking pictures with or without flash, so I take a few that I put in a travelogue...
