Network

Hi,
I'm travelling to Mallorca next week (near Pollensa).
My job (running a company) requires that I have easy access to the Internet.
I have a GSM modem for my laptop, and my question is: where can I buy a prepaid SIM-card with EDGE connectivity, and what are the rates? I can't seem to find anything like that on the operators' websites.

Thanks,

Hi. You can have broadband connection in many hotels. If you want wireless connection you can choose:

1). wi-fi (you will need choose a hotel according to)
2). Mobile Network connection.

There are 3 mobile operators in Spain, Vodafone, Movistar and Orange. All of them have enough signal level in Pollença (urban area) for Packet Switched connections (Internet access). You don't have to worry about that.

EDGE system is not used in Spain. Mobile Operators elected GPRS to evolve their Packet Switched Networks up to broadband access. The system used by mobile operators to get mobile broadband access to Internet is UMTS (also called 3G). I recommend to you:

1). Find out if your Laptop Modem is compatible with 3G (UMTS). If it is you will not have any problem. You will get up to 1 Mbps (download) and 384 (to upload) depending on where you are (distance to your server station, I mean) and the modem capabilities.

2). If your laptop modem is not compatible with 3G(UMTS) you only have one option if you want mobile access: GPRS (or wifi, if you fin an access point). With GPRS you can get arround 30 Kbps, like an old V92 fixed line modem.

Refferred to prepaid SIM cards you will find it in many shops in Pollença.

Salute.

Travel Tips for Palma de Mallorca

MAJORCA (Mallorca)

by patrikske

MAJORCA (Mallorca), the largest island from the Balearic island chain, is most famous for its beaches and resorts. Towering mountains in the northeast, beautiful caves in the east, and a very picturesque coastline.

BCM (British Club Majorca)

by joecooper about BCM (British Club Majorca)

The biggest club on the isalnd and as the name suggests, British run. They actually have a Spanish night!! There are lods of good DJ's who play here and entrance/drinks are reasonably priced for a British holidaymaker! The Millenium bar downstairs in a seperte venue and just as good. Can't rememebr. No, seriously - I can't remember anything from that holiday!!

Mallorcan cuisine at its best!

by Senoritasmile about Ca'n Pedro

A family run institution which has two big, buzzing restaurants in the small town of Genova, a short taxi ride from the centre of Palma.

This is a must visit restaurant. Rustic ambience where you can enjoy well-cooked local dishes. Renowned for their 'Pa amb oli', (toasted bread which you rub with cloves of garlic and small, viine tomatoes and sprinkle with salt) and their huge bowls of snails in a peppery 'broth'.

This is mainly a grilled meat restaurant although their are a few fish choices available too. Cochinillo - suckling pig
Lomo con Col - pork fillet topped with pate, pine nuts and raisins and wrapped in young cabbage leaves

Valdemossa

I found this place so charming. La cartoixa is an ancient monastery with the special history that George Sand and her lover Frédéric Chopin lived one winter in this place (it seems they weren't really happy there:-))
anyway it's worth to visit this monastery but the village as well is very beautiful with many tourist shops and restaurants...

Parc de la Mar

by pugwashman

The Parc de la Mar can be found in between Sa Seu and the sea. You can walk along the walls next to the Cathedral looking down onto the lake beneath, and then continue along into the old town and return through the parc itself for views back across the water to Sa Seu. There are also cafes/restaurants there where you can lap up the view.
