More about Hotel d'Or Punta del Mar
We had a great holiday!
We have just returned from a very enjoyable holiday at the Punta del mar. We went self catering so I cannot comment on the resturant facilities but the snacks we had in the bar were nice, pizzas, salads & cocktails etc. Our 1 bedroom apartment was much more roomy than what weve had on previous hols, with a bedroom with twin beds and a bathroom plus another room with twin beds and 2 sofas, this room was a little cramped with all this in, but atleast my kids were sleeping on real beds and not sofa beds. This room also had its own bathroom. Kitchen facilitys were very basic with no microwave or grill, just a hob and a whistling kettle that took a while to boil ! Each room had its own balcony and the sea views are fab.
When we first arrived the apartment seemed very clean, we did however have some freindly ants visiting us daily (we were on the 2nd floor). The pool area is very beautiful but very sliippy as previously mentioned by everyones reviews. Sun beds are in short supply so yes unfortunatly we did finish up having to go early and reserve them (not too early) If you cant beat them join them!
The location of the hotel I personally think is the best in Santa Ponsa, just a short stroll from the Square where certainly anyone with young children like us will want to be, Live music, mini disco, face painting. The kids loved it running around dancing and making freinds, The livelier part of Santa Ponsa is only about 10 to 15 mins walk certainly not far, we walked down to the beach frequently and with a four year old, those who say it is a long walk must either be very lazy or old and infirm!
The first few days in the hotel I was worried that the only other residents were indeed pensioners and did feel out of place with my two lively children (4&7) but thankfully each day more and more kids were arriving and the oldies were out numbered! I think this was just because it was still early season.
Our room was cleaned every other day and our bedding changed once, although we had clean towels each time they cleaned. I had no problems with any of the staff. Entertainment was poor but with the square so close this wasn't a problem.
Overall I thought the hotel was good and we had a very enjoyable holiday, We chose Santa Ponsa as we didnt want too long a taxi ride from the airport, it took about 25 mins and the resort I thought was nice. We'd certainly consider going back and staying at the Punta again. We give The Punta del mar the THUMBS UP!!!!!
Give it a miss
10 of us have just returned back from 7 nights at the Punta Del Mar, hotel can be summed up by saying the most helpful employee was the one who replaced the thermostat on the shower to prevent us being scalded every time we switched the shower on. The room was adequate and cleaned daily with fresh towels every day however the reception staff were not very helpful, the snack bar staff - especially one of the females - were rude, the restaurant staff were a joke only interested in serving elderly guests who would normally offer a tip, having to wait until you were halfway through your main course before being offered a drink is unacceptable, most nights we were not offered a drink at all. The staff were generally unhelpful and hardly acknowledged the guests not even a "hola" the food choice at breakfast was dismal unless you were a "full English fan", dinner was hardly inspiring, one of our party was vegetarian and the choice was virtually chips and pasta for a week, when asked if a dish could be prepared in advance the answer was no even though we were prepared to pay for the meal. Entertainment has to be found outside the hotel unless you are a glutton for punishment !!
Would sum this hotel up by saying the weather was better than the hotel and it was cloudy for 3 of the 7 days, would not go back under any circumstances.
Not bad but.......
My wife and I have just returned from a 7 day holiday with Direct Holidays staying at the Hotel d'Or Punta Del Mar. We chose this hotel as it was Star Choice in the Direct Holidays brochure.
Our first impressions of the hotel were good in view of it's magnificient setting overlooking Santa Ponsa bay and the plush reception area. On entering our allocated room however we discovered that we had no balcony, only a sea view through a large picture window which could be opened. Although the brochure implied we would get a balcony or terrace with sea views the Direct Holidays rep was very unhelpful and told us that the hotel had 10 rooms with no balcony and basically it was just our hard luck we didn't have one. Despite her promising to take the matter up with reception we ended up having to do this ourselves and after being fobbed off a couple of times they eventually sent us to room 101!!! At least this room had a balcony though it did not appear to have been cleaned for some time and was clearly kept for awkward clients like ourselves!
To be fair the cleaner came to our room every day thereafter and she was very friendly which is more than can be said for the staff in the restaurant which resembled a works canteen as it was so busy. Every mealtime was a free for all trying to find a clear table then trying to get served with a drink by a waiter if one could be found. The quality of the food was good though choice could be a little limited at times. The desserts were excellent and there was a choice of six flavours of ice cream at any time!
The pool areas were kept well maintained but there did not appear to be enough sunbeds for the size of the hotel and we usually spent our days on the beach and came back to the hotel later in the afternoon for a dip in the pool.
The hotel was a good half mile walk uphill from the town and is only recommended for the able bodied.
As I say there were lots of good things about the hotel but we felt that it did not live up to it's star choice rating for the aforementioned reasons.
Good 3 star hotel, with room for improvement....
We visited the Punta Del Mar for 10 nights (6 June- 16 June) We booked our flights back in October 05, and got a great deal with Globespan, and then booked a one bedroom apartment on a half board basis thru Find-rooms just after the new year and again got a great deal. The taxi fare from Palma to the hotel, is around 35-37 euros.
We were given a one bedroom apartment on the 5th floor, which was en-suite with a walk in shower, a large living area with another bathroom, the balcony was massive and had great views of the med and got the sun from around lunch time until sunset. They were cleaned every day and we were given fresh towels too. There was a couple of cracked tiles and the room could have been doing with a lick of paint but apart from that it was fine. Dont bother with the TV they charge you 3 euros a day for the remote control, and you dont go on holiday to watch the TV anyway.
The hotel itself as reported before has great views from nearly every room, and you notice this when you arrive at reception. We found all the staff very freindly especially in the bar/pool area on the first floor. Reception is on the 6th floor, and the restaurant is on the 4th floor so we only needed the lift when we were going down to the pool. There is internet access at reception and costs something like 6 euros for 10 mins. In other reviews people have stated about the hill climb, this is only if you turn left coming out the hotel, if you turn right as you come out there is a more easier 5 min walk down to the square by the lovely 4 star Jardin Del Sol suites which look excellent.
This hotel is used by a company called Ocean Village who specialise in cruises and one week stays, so this is why the majority of people are a tad older. There were hardly any children there, although this would probably change once the school holidays start.
The entertainment is quite poor, Lee trys his best with offering archery, water polo, & shooting during the day and the evenings consist of Bingo, Karaoke, Quiz nights & live music. One live music act you have to look out for is the scary women on keyboard with the dyed long blonde hair, who is a cross between the old granny in the Catherine Tate Show, and the singer from Almost Angelic, in the Karen Dunbar Show (the scots readers will know who I mean) she is so bad you just have to laugh...
As stated before the square is a 5 min walk away where the kids can have a great time while a bit later there is acts like Mamma Mia, the Temptations and a Robbie Williams look alike act which is only just bearable as he brings a couple of fit female dancers with him.
As for the food, its ok you won't starve but if your there for 10/14 nights it can become a tad repititive, so we ate out a coule of nights. The cutlery and plates could be doing with being changed, and there is not enough waiters to clear tables, & take drinks orders. We seen many people standing around waiting on tables being cleared and other people including ourselves still eating dessert with your plates from other courses still on your table. These are the things the management should be looking at to improve the hotel. Best times to go to the restaurant are :
Breakfast 8-9am , 9am till 10am can be hectic and the fruit and coffee machines go off automatically at 10. The fried eggs are the worst I've seen, they look as if they've been deep fried from the early hours. however you get the proper bacon from back home most mornings.
Dinner 6.30 - 7.30...after this it gets busy.
Now onto the funniest things i've seen in a while, as reported in other reviews the poolside beds need to be claimed early, and the patio doors open at around 8am. This hotel is used by a lot of different nationalities, Germans (usually first in the Q) Dutch, Danish, English, Scots & Irish. As the doors open it's like a game from It's a Knockout, as everyone dashes to claim their beds, all that 's missing is the inflatable suits and Stuart Hall's hysterical laughing as he commentates (entertainment staff take note). There is also a pool cleaner who noises up the baying crowd by pretending to open the doors only to turn back and water a few more plants, however he came a croper a few days later by talking to someone near the pool & wasnt watching where he was going and fell straight in ! I havent laughed so much in ages. On a more serious note please beware of the tiles around the pool, these become very slippy during the day and we seen at least 3 people falling, one elderly gentleman fell and hurt his elbow and hip and another lady broke a wrist so if your going with children warn them not to run around the pool area.
So overall a good hotel, yes things can be improved, but we had a good holiday the weather was great, the World Cup games were on, the drinks were flowing and there was enough to keep you amused.
Have a great time if your going to this hotel ! ...you've probably stayed in worse !
Rest easy at the Punta
Just returned from a family holiday at the punta. Stayed for 14 nights on a half board basis . On arrival we were very impressed the reception area was lovely with fantastic views over the bay. Our apartments were on the same level as the reception we had two apartments next door to each other with a small hallway then an outer door which meant we could leave our apartment doors open and shut the outer door . Each apartment had a bedroom with twin beds en suite shower room , a lounge area and a separate bathroom . The veiws from our balcony and every other balcony were great all sea views .
We all enjoyed the food , loads of choice and always hot .
Indoor pool was lovely and warm , seemed not every one knew about it as we often had it to ourselves . Out door pool was very cold but my partner and daughter managed to get in and found it ok after a few lenghths .
Bar prices a bit high . Entertainment not up to much . Unfortunatly the "square" nightlife had'nt started when we were there . We enjoyed the Glasgow pub just across the road from the square .
Made good use of the local buses went to palma , palma market , palma nova , peguera and Marine Land . bus fare between 1euro 20 and 2euros 40 .
Great hotel not suitable if you have walking difficulties
This hotel is in a beautiful location, right on the sea with great views. We had a lovely room and the food was very good. There is only one problem ,there is a very long wal;k downhill to get to the main town and even if you want the bus it is agood ten minute walk from the hotel, although this is on the flat. We enjoyed our holiday but it would have been better if the hotel had been in a better location for the town.
We stayed at this hotel for one week during Easter holidays and really enjoyed our stay here. The most impressive part was the view from our balcony and the common areas...spectacular! Our room was basic but more than adequate for a family of three and we were pleasantly surprised to have a separate bedroom with ensuite for ourselves while our daughter had the living area for sleeping and main bathroom for herself. There were a few loose tiles that required fixing but other than that no other problems. We were on a half board basis and the food was fine with enough choice to keep everyone happy although I think two weeks of the meals would be too much. The pools, while lovely to look at, were definitely COLD and not that enjoyable to swim in, especially for April! It was nice to have the option of a much warmer indoor pool! This is a great hotel if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Santa Ponsa, which we did, yet close enough to walk to in 15 minutes.
On first impressions the hotel was lovely. It had great views and was really clean. The domestic staff done a great job and were friendly However the rest of the staff were very rude and unhelpful. The receptiopn staff would walk away from you if you wished to discuse a problem. The resturant staff were not interested in serving you drinks until you were almost finished your meal and they would then bang the drinks menu down on the table if you requested a drink which was not available. When I politely advised the bar staff that she had given me a drink which I had not ordered I was shouted at and still expected to take the drink. The choice of food was poor and you had no hope if you were a vegetarien or wished to eat a health meal. The evening entertainment was poor and you a long distance to walk to the busy part of town. I can not belive this hotel has been given a three star rating. However the pool area was very nice but I could not advise anyone to go to this hotel and I will not be returning. I would be able to understand the staffs attitude if I had been rude or demanding however I had been very respectful of them.
spectacular views across the bay
We had two weeks here from 30th May. The view was fantastic from the balcony, we were on the fifth floor, a bit of an upside down hotel, we went up to reception and down to the restaurant, bar and pool. The staff were brilliant, the room was cleaned every day, with clean towels, the maids were friendly, even trying to teach us spanish. Restaurant was good, with a variation of food, staff were very friendly and helpful, greeting us and making sure we had drinks. The hotel was full while we stayed there and the waiters made sure the tables were cleaned and ready for the next customer. They seemed very overworked and did a brilliant job, speaking most languages, even if only a little, which was a nice touch. The square at night is great, especially for younger children early on and then for adults later. We met some nice people here from different countries and had one of the best holidays, its the first time for quite a while that we were sad to leave. The weather was a bit cold the first couple of days, but after that it was hot and sunny. We would definitely return to this hotel.
game for a laugh!!
"as was stated by the reviewer from glasgow, the hotel was not to bad, and his description on the sun beds was very funny as i was one of the ,"its a knockout gang"
his view was very accurate!! i have not stopped laughing since i read his review!
as i along with another glasgow guy ,we broke ranks and made a bee-line for the sun beds when the attendant was not looking!! ,the look on the rest of the guests who were waiting in line from 8.00am was priceless!! very very funny then they made a break for it and they were all falling over one another!! and argueing [belly laughs around!!!]
anyway if you are going to the punta have a ball , but remember these reviews on the sunbeds!! " griff
