Paseo Marítimo/Passeig Marítim
I bring this tip because this is, from my point of view, the best place for accommodation (despite the price of the hotels). Obviously, they are not to chepa but you may find good offers during the low season.

Esmeralda Park: Hotel Cala D'Or
Esmeralda Park is Charter Tourist Hell!
It caters to groups primarily from England, Holland, Germany and Scandinavia. It has 3 pools and one tiny beach cove where speedo wearing sun-worshippers can line up to fight over the best spot to lounge all day long.
As for the apartment/hotel room itself, it is clean-ish (maid service could certainly be better...but they do show up and make the bed) and has plenty of space. The balconies are ok, but only a few have unobstructed views of the ocean. The kitchenette is not something that you could actually cook with (2 small stove-top burners, no oven and a mini fridge). There are 2 lido restaurants (but beware, hotel staff 'accidentally' added 4 extra items to our lunch cheque one day). In terms of entertainment, there is nightly music and the hotel staff lip-sync on stage, doing renditions of Sister Act, Grease, The Little Mermaid, etc. Our balcony was unfortunately just above the PA system, but I think the entire complex can hear the music throughout the night (7-11pm).
If you are the kind of person who wants a holiday where you don't have to think, go anywhere, experience anything, and let the hotel staff deal with your children during the day, then maybe this is your kind of place. But Esmeralda Park, and Cala D'Or for that matter, are not places we will go back to should we ever be on Mallorca again. It seemed solely geared for mass tourism, had no character and the whole area was more expensive than it needed to be.
Thank God we rented a car, explored the island and escaped the throngs of this place!

El Arenal Accomadations: Hotels in Mallorca
During our stay in Mallorca the hotels were usually pretty clean. Even if you select a budget hotel. There it depends on how flexible you are. If you look for just a place to stay or require extra comfort. Keep in mind that El Arenal is a party district and the hotel guests are not always as quiet as they should be. When you book a hotel stay in Mallorca they normally include breakfast or both breakfast and dinner.
Unique Quality: Both places we stayed did not have much of a view and the pool was not heated or very big. But our accomadtion was a place "to stay". There are plenty of hotels available with spectacular views and large heated pools but usually that comes with a price tag.

Hotel Bahía Park (S'Arenal): Where's the air conditioning???
What to say about this place....? Well, the hotel was nice, big room, clean toilet, nice balcony, great swimming pool, good food...but...(and there's always a but)... THERE WAS NO AIR CONDITIONING!!! And, believe me, Mallorca in August is hell. 40 degrees Celsius, 90% humidity. The first night we couldn't sleep, the second night we placed the mattress in the balcony.... and couldn't sleep either...why? there was a block of apartments opposite the hotel and hundreds of drunk Germans were having a party and puking through the windows, peeing, and a long list of so ons.
My advice: if you like a place on the beach to relax, avoid Mallorca. The island is really beautiful, and so are the beaches, but some tourists only go there looking for cheap drinks and party and end up spoiling your holidays.
I have nothing against Germans (I've got lost of friends there) but when they come to Spain...it's a shame. They seem to come only to get drunk all day and night long. I think this is not enjoying a holiday. At least, if you come to Spain to get litres of cheap alcohol try not to annoy the rest of tourists who only want to relax and enjoy their free time.

Albergue, Platja de Palma: Really cheap and clean!
I arrived in this youth hostel last week in April 2005 and I had no idea what it was like before. I took a cab from my friends' house in Palma, near Porto Pi, as I didn't want to carry my big big luggage. Anyway, the hostel's situated very close to the sea,you just walk out and follow your direction,it's a 1-minute walk to the sea! Rooms are cleaned every day ( I mean the bathroom, trash), breakfast is...well,it's just some bread, margarine (yak!),marmelade,corn-flakes and something to drink. It's the same every day, but once you start partying in the area, you don't care because you get up late and later, have to go out to get sth to eat :-).Or it's possible to pay some extra money to get lunch/supper. This hostel is pretty small, there are frequent school trips so sometimes it can get too noisy, but it's not such a headache. It's located in a "german holiday resort", so it is pretty hard to find a pure Spanish restaurant.Sure, there are paellas and sangrias offered, but offered by German restaurants and I could always say this...food's not identical there.
Unique Quality: As far as this hostel is located in El Arenal (a few km from Palma, in the east), there's nothing really interesting in the area, there are just hotels, a strip of beach and the sea, that's it.But, talking about accommodation,it was really good. There are 4-bed rooms, but it's pretty rare to stay with more than 2 other people in one room. Depends on the season,of course,in April-May,it was OK. There's no pool, but it doesn't matter as the sea is close. and the view....well, you can see other hotels and buildings, not the sea. But it's ok. It's a good place to sleep and meet other travellers!!!!!!!

Good breakfast, dinner is also ok.
Situated along the boulevard and the beach.

Sorry, I can't recall the name of the place: Hotel in Mallorca
It was okay, as far as hotels go. The nice thing about it was it across the street from the beach. The bad thing was it was inhabited by the Senior Citizen Convention that seem to be in town that weekend. No, it wasn't that bad. The buffett was, for the most part very good except the dining room was crammed with tables which made eating a challenge.
