Weekend Break in Mallorca?
by haleysmith
For the last three years my husband and I have really enjoyed a weekend break in Palma. We loved the pavement bars and old town squares where we could people watch, we loved the shopping and a bit of sunbathing too. Is there anywhere else in Mallorca that would make a good weekend break where we could enjoy the same kind of stuff particularly the traditional town squares? Many thanks VTers!

My favourite is Pollensa -we have been there more than once and one of the best things we like about it is the square and its cafes from where to watch the world go by.
We liked to visit Puerto de Pollensa bu have not stayed there
Our three daghters have all enjoyed short breaks in Mallorca and their favourites, outside of the old town in Palma de Mallorca, are Soller and Deia. They have used this site
http://www.i-escape.com/mallorca/hotels.php
Favourite in Soller was C'an Soller and in Deia S'Hotel D'es Puig.
Hope this helps

I'd vote for Pollensa as well, particularly the Sunday morning food market. It's almost cartoon like in it's atmosphere and colour. The square is a brilliant place for a meal in the evening, but Sunday morning is really special.

Pollensa above sounds an ideal choice and it's worth pointing-out that you wouldnt be very far from Alcudia where you have the old town as well as the newer resort with its modern marina area.
The only down-side is that these towns are as far from Palma as its possible to get, so getting from and to the airport is at least 60 - 90 minutes travelling time.

I remember that on our first visit to Pollensa our flight arrived about 7.45 in the evening. We asked the owner for details of a place to shop for essentials before we arrived at the house.
We picked up a car at the airport, shopped in a supermarket that closed at nine but were sitting down to eat and enjoy a glass of wine by 10pm, having unloaded and unpacked.

I totally agree with your suggestion re Pollenca as we have been there many times and I suppose, if I am honest, I am trying to find exactly what Pollenca has but in a new location that we have yet to discover. So thank you, at least we're sharing the same thought process!
What about Soller anyone?

I'll be awkward now and suggest Cala Bona.
We went last Sept and are going again this Sept!
Its a nice "adult" sort of resort - laid-back, nice walks along the promenade and a lovely harbour area. Then, if you want a beach or a bit more activity, it is 500-600 yards from the start of Cala Millor with it's shops and bars.

I did not mention Cala Bona because it is so long since I went there - Itook my Mum for what turned out to be her last holiday.
We both loved it and I am so glad to hear it has obviously not really changed.

I love the old town of Pollensa as well as nearby Puerto Pollensa, and the old town of Alcudia is another favourite. I think a combination of Soller and Puerto Soller might suit you, I've only visited them during daytimes but friends have enjoyed holidays there. Or maybe try Fornalutx which is reputed to be the most beautiful village on the island? A friend goes there every year and is addicted to the place!

when going to a shop or restaurant, always start with HOLA instead of Hello, you will get better service. It's also good to learn some spanish and try to speak it, they might speak English to you back, but they do appreciate the effort you've made!!
BY Train

If you want to go from Palma to Soller there is an amazing way to go: by a traditional train, it seems that is like 100 years ago. It is an unforgettable trip along several tunnels. The view along the way is astonishing. You must try for sure!
La Seu Cathedral
by Fam_Stoica
The La Seu Cathedral was erected between 1230-1601 on the site of an existing Arab mosque.
The legend : in 1229, as the king Jaime I was on his way to recapture Mallorca, his fleet was struck by a terrible storm; he vowed to the Virgin Mary that if he survived the storm, he would erect a church in her honor. After the storm had blown over, finding himself safe and sound, he immediately undertook the project.
Designed in the French Gothic style, the cathedral is 121 meter long and 55 meter wide. The main body of the church is set in the middle of a mass of pillars and spires, behind which lies the strong buttress reinforced with a double row of flying arches. The bell tower, still unfinished today, is 52 meter high. The main facade, which overlooks the Almudaina Palace, collapsed during an earthquake in 1851 and was later completely reconstructed, with the exception of the Renaissance-era door which miraculously emerged unscathed.
The vast, airy interior is striking for its large-scale harmonious proportions. It features three naves resting on 44-meter tall octagonal pillars, eight chapels each side of the nave.
Valldemosa
by German_Girl
Located at 410 m height in the north-western part of Mallorca, you find the romantic village of Valldemosa where Frederic Chopin and Georg Sand spent some days in the winter of 1839. You don't wanna miss this place on your hot spot list.
