not-so-touristy beaches near Palma?

by sophief

Hello,

I was just wondered if anyone had any advice as to which beaches were accessible from Palma town centre. Are there any within 1 hours walk? Also, any tips as to which are less touristy, even if these are a longer journey away, would be great (I don't really fancy going to Magaluf)! I know Palma isn't the best place to stay from the point of view of beaches, but I would much rather base myself there than stay in a resort.

Thank you!

Hi Sophie,
Glad to see you survived the wedding trip to Ireland! Palma is a great city but I'm not really familiar with the beaches nearby. Despite what you say I would still suggest you stay in a resort and visit the city from that base. Puerto Pollensa in the N.E. of Mallorca is a beautiful resort, quite low-key and not a 'late-night partying' resort like Magaluff. There is a long sandy beach adjacent to the town and a lovely 'pine-walk' at the other end with smaller bathing places. Also you can easily get the boat over to Formentor Beach, which is one of the best and most scenic beaches on the island. There are lovely coves with sandy beaches near Alcudia, in the areas of Manresa and Mal Pas, which you could access by bike or by bus to Alcudia (old town)and then walk.
For general info and accomodation in the area check out www.Puertopollensa.com

go to the old-city-where the restaurants are and to the yachting-harbor-nightclubbing is great !! I always miss Palma, because my mum lives there and I have nice memories of the city: the people, the restaurants, the clubs, the shops, the old houses...

View of Valldemosa

by ncfg

When I went by the traditional train from Palma to Soller, we stopped in great viewing points and we could appreciate some amazing landscapes.
The old village of Valldemossa was one of those amazing views.
Take a look at the photo. Beautiful, isn't it?

Fancy something different ?

by pugwashman about Baisakhi Hindu restaurante - Palma

This place is not your average Indian restaurant. There is no menu, you go to your table and various courses are served to you, along with copious amounts of red wine.
It is interesting and it's quite nice to try things that I would not normally even think of ordering, such as:
Quail kebab, Banana Curry, Duck and Mango Curry, Vegetable kebab, Green Pea & Cheese Curry.
Nothing was horrible, and some of it was surprisingly nice, but I'm afraid at the end of the day I have to say I think I'd probably prefer a chicken vindaloo and keema naan with a few pints of Kingfisher.
However it is a different and certainly makes a change from the normal Curry House experience.
The ambience is very nice and the service is great, but be warned once you finish your main course the wine suddenly stops flowing, so make sure your glass is full. Duck and Mango curry.

Parc de les Estacions

As the name suggests, the park close to the railway stations - in truth not much here but if you,ve time to kill before a train or bus take a look at the fountains here, press the foot valves to make your own display - we enjoyed.

Palau de l'Almudaina

The Palace is located directly opposite Sa Seu Cathderal.
It has nice gardens and a large lake with black swans on it.
We didn't go inside but it is a nice place to take a walk around on the way to Sa Seu.
