Mendi Bekoa Lodge: Axpe, in Spain's Basque Country

The Mendigoikoa is a former farmhouse constructed in limestone. It sits on a hill, overlooking the village below, and is surrounded by mountains.

The interior of the lodge is somewhat rustic with heavy wooden doors, stone floors...you kind of feel like you've regressed to midieval times. The first floor is a bit sterile...there isn't a cozy lounge area to hang out in. This I would have to say was my biggest complaint about the lodge...not really a big deal. There is a small bar on the first floor. The glassed-in terrace where breakfast is served (included in price), is atmospheric with views of the surrounding landscape.

The rooms are cozy and very tastefully decorated with antiques, but did show some slight wear. The bathroom was very spacious with a large tub. The view from my room was great. In general, I loved the place, and slept well.

On weekends the lodge is often booked because it is a popular place for weddings, so try to make a weekday reservation. I read somewhere that the lodge is closed from November to March.

The adjacent farmhouse, the Mendi Goikoa, has some of the best food I found in Spain. The wines were excellent also. I believe the chef studied at the Cordon Bleu, but you will find traditional Spanish food here.

The setting is beautiful and relaxing, the architecture has character, and the food in the restaurant is worth a stop in itself.
