Must-see piece of art
by frenchderek
You have to see the Guggenheim: and keep on seeing it, at different times of the day, on different days. It always looks different. As a work of art it's a masterpiece. As an art-gallery, it fails. Here, form does not follow function.
On the outside it overshadows both the (not small, or un-noticeable) Jeff Koons' "puppy", nor the equally impressive spider of Louise Bourgeoise, "Mam". Inside, despite two excellent shows, we fely constantly aware of the building. The cafeteria has to adapt to the constraints of the building; and there's only a tiny card/souvenir corner.
So, go see it, look at it but only go inside if the show interests you. Walking along the riverside (opposite the old town) in the evening, gazing at the varying styles, shapes and sizes of the buildings on the opposite bank (and admiring the Spanish families doing the same thing - but much more animatedly!)..
Guggenheim Museum

Guggenheim Musseum, this part of Bilbao has changed a lot since I left.
I like this photo, as it was a little dificult to do it, as there were some constructions on my side, and i did not expect to get so nice pic! ...
Children's play area
by timtregenza
A new children's play area opened in July 2004 next to the Guggenheim.
This play area, aimed at the active c.10 year old features many scrambling nets and similar equipment. There are also things for small kids, all done with style.
Bilbao is full of small playparks, in particular along the river on the Deusto side (start opposite the river museum and head towards the centre of the city).
EUSKERA, the basque language
by RudoElCojonudo
Euskera is how we call our most precious treassure, our language, the Basque Language. From the south of France to the banks of river Ebro, and from Santander to the Pyrenees, the Euskera is the soul of our ancient country, The Basque Country.
With no known relationship with other indoeuropen languages, Euskera is one of the oldest languages in Europe.

Semana Santa
by timtregenza
Processions occur all through holy week all over the city. Some are silent at 5am, others are large and noisy, with wailing trumpets and loud drumbeats accompanying the movement of large icons depicting the passion.
