    Good value 4* chain hotel

I stayed at the 4 star NH Villa de Bilbao with my girlfriend and her parents for 4 nights during New Year 2012/13.

At the time of our visit, this hotel was ranked 12th out of 47 Bilbao hotels on TripAdvisor and nearly 80% of the 110 reviews scored it as 4 or 5 out of 5. That was good enough to convince me to book.

We booked our stay through www.hotels.com (as it was offering 12% cashback through Quidco) and paid £324.85 for 2 double rooms with no breakfast included. This worked out at just over £20 per person per night, which we thought represented very good value for money for a centrally located 4* hotel. The cashback offer reduced the price further still; we received almost £40 cash back after we had completed our stay. We paid in full at the time of booking, several months before our stay.

NH Villa de Bilbao is located at the western end of Gran Via, just a few metres from Plaza del Sagrado Corazon.

It is particularly conveniently located if you are travelling to and from the airport on Bizkaibus #3247 as it stops on Gran Via just a short distance from the hotel.

There are two Metro stations within a short walk of the hotel. In one direction, San Mames station is a little over 5 minutes walk away. In the other direction, straight along Gran Via, Moyua station is a little under 10 minutes walk away. From San Mames it is 4 stops to Casco Viejo (Bilbao's old town) and from Moyua it is 2 stops to Casco Viejo.

Right next to San Mames metro station you will find the Termibus station where you can catch buses to nearby cities such as San Sebastian (Donostia) and Santander.

There are plenty of shops, cafes and pintxos bars within a few minutes walk of the hotel. In particular, you will find a good selection of local pintxos bars just around the corner from the hotel in the area surrounding San Mames football stadium.

There is a selection of banks (with ATMs) along Gran Via and around the perimeter of nearby Plaza Moyua.

Across the road from the hotel is Parque de Dona Casilda de Iturrizar. By cutting through this park, we were able to walk to the Guggenheim Museum in 15-20 minutes.

Our double room was clean and comfortable and contained everything we needed for a short stay. It was typical of hotel rooms in mid-range hotel chains the world over – functional, but lacking that homely, personal feel.

The double bed was comfortable and we slept well every night.

Our room contained a large wardrobe, bedside cabinets, a desk and chair, a small sofa, a mini fridge and a key-operated safe. The flat screen TV mounted on the wall at the foot of the bed picked up dozens of local and international channels. There were ample electric sockets for charging batteries and devices overnight.

Free wi-fi was available in the room and throughout the entire hotel. It worked perfectly (and was reasonably fast) throughout our stay.

My only slight complaint with our room is that it was a bit on the hot and stuffy side. We tried in vain to cool the room down with use of the aircon system, but it seemed to be fixed at a certain temperature. Our window could only be opened a fraction, so it was difficult to get fresh air into the room.

The en-suite bathroom was clean, modern and well-equipped. It contained a bath tub and shower, twin washbasins and a separate cubicle with the toilet in. There was a heated towel rail on one of the walls and a hairdryer next to the washbasins.

Fresh towels and an extensive supply of "Agua de la Tierra" toiletries were provided and replenished each day.

Our room rate didn't include breakfast, but upon checking into the hotel the receptionist informed us of a special offer. Ordinarily, breakfast costs €16 per person per day if purchased on the day, but if you purchase it in advance it costs just €10. We only had breakfast on one of the four mornings we were there; New Year's Day, when many of the surrounding cafes were closed.

Breakfast included a fairly extensive buffet selection and a variety of hot items (different types of eggs, bacon and sausages) that were cooked to order.

The buffet included a choice of cereals (with dried fruits and other accompaniments), a selection of breads and pastries, cold cuts of meats, a variety of cheeses, yoghurts, fresh fruit, cakes and churros with hot chocolate sauce. A variety of fruit juices, teas and coffee were also available.

The breakfast was great as a one-off, but even at the reduced price of €10 per person it was expensive compared to the local cafes.

There is a nice bar area, with comfy seating and a TV, on the ground floor of the hotel. Despite its rather upmarket appearance, the prices are very reasonable. I paid around €3 for a glass of Rioja.

We were able to store our luggage, free of charge, between checking out of the hotel and travelling to the airport later in the day.

A good value 4* chain hotel with modern, comfortable rooms. Very convenient for catching the airport bus, exploring the city by Metro or catching buses to other towns from the nearby Termibus station. Free wi-fi throughout the hotel. Plenty of shops, cafes and pintxos bars within walking distance. Recommended!

Directions: Located on Gran Via, just a short walk from the Metro stations at San Mames and Moyua.

    Stylish & comfortable

The rooms have a modern décor and are very attractive. Loads of closet space and work space. The room had 4 lamps and a pair of reading lights, and enough outlets to charge everything you own. The bed was comfortable, and you can choose what kind of pillow you want. The bathroom had a good assortment of toiletries, including a bath sponge. As I was settling in, a staff person came to the room with an assortment of chocolates!

There are a few steps up to the lobby from the street, but there is a chairlift for handicapped guests.

Unique Quality: The location is great—Casco Viejo (old town) is about 20 minutes walk, and the Guggenheim is 10-15 minutes away.
