first time visitor

by natansz

Hello,
a family of three (2 adults and one 16 year old) will be for the first time in Bilbao (in September). Main reason is to visit the Guggenheim. What are the memebers' suggestions for a stay in Bilbao and for how long?

Few good ideas for a visit could be: 1)San Sebastian, a town to the east of Bilbao famous worldwide for a very simple reason: the food they make. Every bar has tapas, or pinchos, that go down well with a glass of local wine or sider.2)Coast villages dedicated to fishing like Bermeo, Lekeitio, etc, etc, with lots of bars and places to taste that famous basque cooking and surroundings matching accordingly with that delicate and often generous cuisine. And many more places, I´ll leave space for others to write too. You´ll have a blast of a holiday!

thanks so much for your answer.
Is it possible to get to San Sebastian and back at the same day?
Best,
N

We stayed at a B&B - http://www.iturrieneaostatua.com/iturrienea_uk.htm which is in the old town and easy walking distance to the 2 rail stations. The coach to/from San Sebastian is about 1.25 hours and runs every hour.

IMO unless you are really "into" modern art the Guggenheim is a waste of time - the building however is spectacular. Like another poster said, 2 nights in Bilbao is enough if you really want to go to the Guggenheim. The old town is worth a visit, but don't get lost. We were advised not to wander too far as the area next to the old town is unsafe and particularly at night.

A Creepy Procession?

by daryll

Some may find this picture offensive.
There must be some significant and reason why the procession was done in this way.
I really admired the effort done by the locals to organise this procession for the whole long week. Really moving and touching experience.

Green Parking Meters

by johngayton

The city planners have done quite a good job of creating a relatively uncongested city centre and traffic signals are noticeably pedestrian-friendly. Public transport, basically the Metro and Bilbobus, is good with frequent, inexpensive services.

There is however no escaping the ubiquitous infernal-combusting engined machines and whilst most car parking is underground there is some street parking available for which tickets have to be bought from the machines. At least the machines are doing their green bit by being solar powered!

Bilbao Jocundity

by DanielF

Bilbainos are a humorous bunch of people. Their easily recognisable accent and their ebullient personality have turned them into the target of thousands of jokes told all around Spain, including Bilbao. In these jokes, Bilbainos are depicted as exaggerated and boastful people who show, in particular, an immense proud of being from Bilbao. These jokes are spiced up with the peculiar tune that Basques have when speaking Castilian, truffled with a great quantity of swear words, and therefore hardly translatable into other languages.

A typical Bilbaino conversation would be something like:

- Which was the greatest proof of humbleness that Jesus Christ gave us?
- Well, while he could have chosen Bilbao, he chose to be born in Bethlehem.

Athletic Club of Bilbao

by illudiumqh36

The local football team completely respect the pride of this great people...
It's a team that has only Basque players and trainers and no sponsors' logos contaminate their shirt... I think that no other teams do that all over the world.
This notwithstanding Athletic Bilbao is one of the most valuable teams in Spanish Premier League ("La Liga") even if the choice of players can be very limited respect to other teams (Basque region VS. the World!!!).

At Bilbao as almost all Spain...

by lucyguajardo

At Bilbao as almost all Spain the citizen are catholic that's why you can find a lot of churches and beautiful Cathedrals. But the true is that if you go at sunday to a mass it will be difficult to find young people.
