Zenit or Arana?

by gug23

Third trip to Bilbao - stayed at Miro and Hesperia before.
Trying to decide Zenit or Petit Palace Arana? Don't mind the metro/tram, so not figuring location into the decision as much as the property/price (price is also fairly close).
Any thoughts on either or both of these hotels? Travelling in April.
Thanks for any info at all!

Hi, I live in Bilbao and suggest Arana with no doubt. It has been restored recently and the situation is miles away better than Zenit hotel (old quarter just round the corner, you can walk along the river to Guggenheim, etc..). Both of them should be of similar characteristics (modern, functional, etc)

If you need any info about Bilbao, don´t hesitate in asking or e-mailing me: aupathletic@hotmail.com, it will be a pleasure for me to introduce to the world´s nicest city....

All the best.

Arana is probably better location.

I have stayed in Zenit in Seville and quality was good. Don't know the Arana.

Hi,

Does anybody know the hotel "Petit Palace Arana" in Bilbao (in front of the Arriaga theatre and Plaza del Arsenal, near Plaza Nueva)?
How is the area like (it's located calle Bidebarrieta in front of Arriaga theatre, at the border between Casco Viejo and el Ensanche)?

Thank you very much for your help.

I have never stayed there, but the location is perfect: Bidebarrieta is one of the main commercial streets in the historic area of Bilbao. Just opposite the square of the Sandbank, so to say the heart of the city. The New Square is one of the most popular places to have tapas and drinks in the casco viejo. To reach the Ensanche (Abando) you will just have to cross the Arriaga bridge.

There is a metro station a few hundred meters away (Casco Viejo), the trams also stop at Arriaga and the train stations (FEVE and RENFE) are both across the river. Bizkaibus buses to the airport and other towns also used to depart from the Sandbank (tinglados del arenal), but the area was under construction the last time I was in Bilbao (April).

Something for everyone

by timtregenza

Bilbao offers something for everyone, art (modern, classical, and Basque), shopping (high end such as Gucci through to local markets), and a range of dining experiences from High cost stylish menus to simple menus, and don´t forget the pintxos (tapas) that you graze going from Bar to bar.

Often bars and restaurants cluster together, facilitating the eat, drink, and move eating habit that the the bilbao people use.

Try the casco viejo (old quarter), or around Pozas / Indautxu

Los Reyes

by timtregenza

The Spanish celebrate Los Reyes (Epiphany) as the time to exchange presents at Christmas. [The Basques celebrate on the 25th December with the Olantxero].

In Bilbao, there is a grand parade at 6pm on the eve of Los Reyes (5 January) down Gran Via.

This bright event is very popular with children as sweets are thrown from the passing floats.

Check shirts and jumpers

by timtregenza

If you want to blend in, gentlemen should bring a large supply of check shirts and a jumper (pullover/jersey) to drape artistically accross the shoulders.

No, I'm not joking, have a look when you are here
