San Sebastian to Italy (Florence)

by jeremyg

Hi,

I'm intending to get travel by land (preferably by train) from San Sebastian to Italy (Florence to be exact) in June. I wondered if anyone has done this or can tell me if it is possible to do easily. I've never traveled by train in Europe so not sure how easy it is. Looking at raileurope.com it looks very possible but could involve lots of changes. Could I do it in a day?

Any help most welcome

Jeremy

Might be tough to do it in a day. My friends took the night train sleeper to get from SS to Barcelona. Admittedly it leaves late at night and gets into Barcelona early. Then I would check say Barcelona to Milan, then from Milan to Florence.

This rail tour is feasible in one day but there are some transfers along. It would be nice to shake a loose leg around the TrainStations...
I am sending below the concerned link in italian railroads:

There is a Bahn german raildoad service as well:

Thank you for your replies. Lot's to think about!

You're right not to do it all in one go - it's a long trip

I'm now thinking of hopping into France and getting a train from Bayonne to Marseille, staying the night there (Marseille) and hiring a car to Florence.

Basically I am going to San Sebastian Jazz festival with a friend and continue my holiday with me girlfriend in the Tuscany area of Italy. We reckon she could fly to Marseille and meet me there - kind of half way. The trip to Bayonne to Marseille is about 7 hours (http://tinyurl.com/4y4uqn).

see any red flags in this idea?

Go up to Monte Igüeldo

by timtregenza

Monte Igüeldo is the hill at the left hand end of the bay, at the foot of which is the Playa de Ondarreta.

Walk past the tennis courts and get the furnicular railway (about 2 euros return, running every 15 minutes) to the top to see the splendid views, have a drink in the fairly miserable cafe, and wonder why there is a (closed) funfair up there!

Askatasunaren hiribidea

by mikey_e

Askatasunaren hiribidea or Avenida de la Libertad is very similar to the one in Lisbon, with the exception that it has a lot less traffic. It extends from the Udaletxe or Ayuntamiento and the Bahia de la Concha all the way across to the Urumea, effectively providing a buffer between the Alde Zaharra and the Ensanche. It is one of the primary commercial streets in the city and is also where the main tourist office is located (so make sure to mark it down on your maps). The street has a wide park that follows the traffic and shields the walkers and the shops from the cars. This is one of the best places to come to in the evening if you are looking for somewhere to promenade before dinner. Donostiarrak (the people of Donostia) of all ages come out here in couples and families to eat ice cream and pass the time while listening to the various buskers and musicians. Many times you’ll see the same people (or pretty much the same people) you saw in Barcelona and Madrid: the Andean musicians, the break dancers and those people who do some sort of cross between martial arts and the samba. Occasionally, however, there will be traditional performers and Basque singers who perform folksongs in the various dialects of the North. You can tell them apart – the tourists usually create a throng around the Brazilian-cum-taichi dancers, while the Basques, especially those trying to pass on the language to their children, seek out the traditional Basque performers.

Donostia

I first visited this place in spring time, April is I remember correctly. I liked it so much that I decided to return but to learn Spanish. I had the most amazing 2 weeks at the Lacunza International Language School. Pictures to follow
