Plaza de la Constitucion

by bmariluch

When was the earlier bullring on this site transformed into the Plaza?
My Grandfather told me a story about going to San Sebastian from Aldudes, France about 1900-1902 during a Basque Festival (might have been San Fermin) and running with the bulls with his brothers. What might have been the route of the running? Perhaps Calle San Jeronimo or Calle Narrica? He met my Grandmother at the dancing at the Festival and was a little sketchy on the details of the bull running. More important things on his mind, I would guess.
Thank you for your review and response.

I bit of preliminary research indicates that in the early 1900's running races against other humans were held in the bulls rings "At the end of the century competitions began to cover longer distances, such as Aia-to-Getaria and back. Numerous Basque athletes tested their endurance in this race, but "Napar-zarra" showed his absolute supremacy in 1908. Napar-zarra, the racing name of Francisco Echarri, had beaten the French runner Neven in the bullring of Donostia-San Sebastián in September, 1907. Pitted against the "Juanagorri" father and son team over the Aia-to-Getaria and back course, who ran the race as a relay, he still came through to win. However if the father in the Juanagorri team was Domingo Igarabide, he would have been close to 80 years old by then." Karl

Travel Tips for San Sebastián

La Contxa

by Peret

The "Contxa" beach is one of the most beautiful sigths that i've ever seen. Specially in the night, to take a stroll for it have something magic. You get an "oceanic" sentation. The city of Donosti has its centre close to this beach. Sure you'll find i you go toDonosti. Don't forget, in the day great, in the nigth incredible.

Good food in a comfortable setting!

by ilovespain about Urola

One evening I was scouting for a place to have dinner in Old Town. If not for the crowd noise, I would have missed this wonderful restaurant. Quite inconspicuous on a street called Fermin Calbeton, the bar was swamped with locals when I happened to walk by. I had a good feeling about this joint so I went ahead and tried. The food was good. The portion they offered was hearty. I had tomato salad, duck liver terrine and filets of duck breast (poco hecho, of course). They were all delicious. Overall, a very satisfying dining experience.

The beaches

by PookieRabbit

The beaches in San Sebastian are superb. The picture here shows the view from Playa de Ondarreta looking towards Playa de la Concha in the distance. Playa de la Concha is named after its shape. Concha = Shell.
One word of advice though. When we visited the beach was fairly quite, however the tide comes up along way so beach space is at a premium at this point in the day.

Puente Maria Cristina

by mikey_e

The Puente Maria Cristina is an elaborate construction from the Belle Epoque that adds to the numerous other installations either named after or inaugurated by this Queen. It crosses the Urumea, joining the Ensanche on the south-west side to the train station on the north-east side. It was officially inaugurated in 1905, and took something like 12 years to build. The bridge is remarkable for the four gigantic (18 metre high) obelisks that mark the ends of the bridge. It was designed to be a copy of the Alexandre III Bridge in Paris, and its opening was marked with great fanfare. Today it is used as an ordinary bridge by the people of Donostia, but you just can’t help feeling like you’re part of some sort of procession as you walk down the bridge, especially if you’re on your way to the train station for your triumphant departure from this beautiful city.

Donostia- San Sebastian

by DaniBachmann

"Saturday Night"

Donostia is a beautiful city in Euskal Herria- or the Basque country. I immediately fell in love with its three, white beaches and the old part of the town with its bars and small lanes...

have a look for yourself :)...
