Arriving by ship and want to do Las Palmas on my own

by swamom

We will be in Las Palmas in December, arriving by cruise ship. I am seeking information regarding doing Las Palmas on my own, rather than taking a cruise tour. Any help is appreciated.

Las Palmas is really a nice historical city to just stroll around in.
And it´s a very walkable city too.

Haven't done Las Palmas yet but looks worth it in the guides! I can understand you wouldn't want to carry books about on your cruise, but why not get the Old City map in advance? We have found the tourist info offices and ayuntamientos have come on leaps and bounds on this in recent years, and if you e-mail they will send you a good map either by post or electronically, if there isn't a decent one online. That way you can plan your trip and where to start etc, to avoid wandering aimlessly and spending ages finding the right sector. Try:

There is a really interesting museumn about Gran Canaria in Las Palmas that focuses on the indiginous people who lived there before the europeans arrived.
That is really interesting.

Travel Tips for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

strolling high and low around Las Palmas

by shonzilla

Weather, a proper combination of city life and pristine place away from vibrant civilzation. Seems like a wonderful place to live in. Imagine living on the coastline, in the almost perfect weather all year long, together half of million inhabitants (hence, town has sufficient infrastructure for any city-spoiled person like me).

There are couple of places to check out: Benito Pérez Galdós birth house, house where Christopher Columbus visited on his trip to Americas and back, a cathedral, a couple of churches, market. Stroll around and you'll be immersed.

Scuba Diving in Puerto Rico

by Damien9

I can highly recommend diving with Top Diving, based in Puerto Rico. These guys are very professional, knowledgeable and above all Fun! They are PADI registered with the owners being very experienced PADI instructors, one is a Master instructor. From basic try-dives to the more challenging El-Cabron reef dive they go out of their way to make sure you enjoy al the diving safely.

They have recently opened an all new building right on the marina and can provide all good quality equipment. The owner personally drove my dive buddy and I up to Arinaga to do the El Cabron dive we wanted, you can’t ask for more than that! Give ‘em a try! You can use all or some of your own equipment or rent all that you need.

The Guia Cheese Fair,

by Birsen

The northern borough of Santa Maria de Guia gets into a festive mood at the end of April – beginning of May, when locals and visitors alike can enjoy a trip to one of Gran Canaria’s most traditional celebrations – The Guia Cheese Fair, where, everyone can enjoy Canarian folklore music, autoctonous sports and typical island products. The star of the show is, however, without doubt, the “Queso de Flor” (Flower cheese) from Guia.

If you are lucky enough to be in a hotel on the top, this is a kind of view you can expext, this was taken from our balcony in the Colina Mar Hotel, one down side getting to the beach, but they do provide a bus service, Phew!!!!

CASA DE COLON

by Maria_75

This is an old building from the 1400's. The islands first governor, Pedro de Vera, used to live here. In 1492 and 1493 Colombus (Colón in spanish) lived here when he was preparing his trip to the new world.

Today the house is a museum dedicated to his travels and explorations. You can also find paintings from the Prado museum in Madrid.

Located in the Vegueta district, surrounded by museums and other old and important buildings.
