Fantastic Time at Balcon del Mar
we have just returned from a ten day stay at Balcon del Mar, over Christmas and New Year.
These appartments are clean spacious, there is a TV, but with a coin meter! Its a great location overlooking the sea and the old town. Great restuarants down there. There are quite a few cats around, however don't leave food out & they won't bother you, there is a cat sanctury nearby.
There is quite a steep hill to walk down to get to the old town, but going down is easy & its only a 2-3euro taxi fare, which reception are glad to call for you. New town & the main strip is prob a 20 min walk, I would get a taxi just to get your bearings.
There is a great pool bar at Balcon del Mar owned & run by Jason & Rachel, who I must say really made our holiday, it is worth staying there just to meet them, & try their great breakfasts & toasties. We were a party of 4 adults & 2 kids, they gave us some great advise to help our stay, the children were welcome, they even stayed open for us when we arrived, so we could have a drink. We will definately be going back this Christmas. The weather a nd company was superb.

Had a Brillant Holiday
Just back from 2 weeks in Balcon Del Mar apts and had one of the best holidays ever. The apts are basic but very spacious and clean. There is always laods of sunbeds as the pool is never metal.Jason Rachel Ruth and Steve in the pool bar where extremely helpful and a good laugh recommend the breakfast for sure.Ideal apts for couples pool not really suitable for young children. Location is excellent the hill is'nt too bad and there are always loads of taxi's for the lazy people(me being on of them at time's).I for one will defo be returning to balcon del mar.
Stayed in Balcon Del Mar for a week in September. The weather was great but there were quite a lot of flies and cats. Bar staff were great! Any queries went to them and they can direct you. The views from our apartment were amazing. There were a lot of hills though.
The receptionist could have been friendlier and there was a bit of a language block but other then that it was fine.
Would recommend it for couples or groups.
We stayed at the Balcon Del Mar Apartments in Puerto Del Carmen in Aug/Sept 2007. Brilliant location. Easy walk down the hill to the best restaurants in the nicest part of town. Clean, cheerful no fuss accomodation, with a couple of pools, great little bar by the pools with top food for snacking. Friendly cats, great views if a sea view apartment is booked. Quiet at night. Bus stops right outside. Perfect base to get out and about and explore Lanzarote from. hire a car for a couple of days and see the whole island. Beaches at Papagayo are a must. As is a trip to Isla Graciosa.
Great couple own the bar.....
...called Jason and Rachel and they made the holiday in the complex! It was quiet when we where there but they really made us feel welcome and have a great sense of humour. The drinks and food are reasonable and you can have a laugh in good company.
The appartments are basic but have all the necessary items and they are very clean. The maids are friendly, unfortunatley the receptionist isn't and the cats spoke better english !
I would recommend Balcon del mar, be be prepared it is at the top of a hill (although it's not that much of a hike!), but it's much nicer being in a slightly quieter area any way!
5th Visit here - and still superb!
Our 5th visit to Lanzarote - and to Balcon Del Mar - and as usual it was marvellous.
The accommodation and complex was spotlessly clean. Furnished as you would expect - cheap but more than adequate. Stunning sea views over to Fuerteventura. Friendly staff, close to supermarkets - a little further to the nightlife but that also meant it was nice and quiet. Taxi Rank is right outside and it's about 3-5 Euros to the busiest nightlife area. Pay Satellite TV - CNN was the only english channel of note.
One big bonus - parking outside - and in a perfect location for attacking the island by car! Which I would strongly reccommend you do!
On this visit, we did have cockroaches - unlike on any previous visit. We put it down to the hotter than usual weather. It didn't bother us anyway - you have to expect it. It became a sport spraying them to death ;-)
Love the cats (except the grey one that hissed a lot)!!!
Spot on - would thoroughly recommend Balcon Del Mar to anyone. We will be going back, again and again.
Love Lanzarote to pieces. Top tips - for food, you simply cannot beat the "Lani's" chain of restaurants - including the gorgeous "Cafe La Ola" in Puerto Del Carmen. For entertainment, try Titti Trollop's Music Hall Tavern - very funny drag queens. For a day out - it has to be the mountains of fire tour, around the Timanfaya National Park - and you simply MUST visit "Mirador Del Rio". Beaches - for tranquility it has to be Papagayo. For the kids, I would go to the beach at Famara. Many beaches have just received a 2007 EU blue flag. Personally, I would not reccommend staying at Costa Teguise. Seems like there is not much going on - and the weather always seems poor compared to Puerto Del Carmen and Playa Blanca.
I'll stop now, else I'll be here all day! lol
first time in lanzarote
just returned from a fantastic two week stay at the balcon del mar, appartments themselves although basic are very clean and tidy, with maids in every other day, appartments are set on quite a steep hill, but not a problem as there are plenty taxis,at very reasonable rates if you cant be bothered to walk, had read about a lot of cats roaming around the appartments, which was a bit of a worry as i am not a cat lover but no need to panic as i only saw about two or three the whole two weeks i was there, and they never bothered anyone, complex has two pools which are kept very clean, enough loungers if are up early in the morning, but i think the thing that really made the holiday so special was the pool bar, there you will come accross two of the nicest people you will ever meet rachel and jason, nothing is ever too much trouble for them, and everything is always done with a smile on their face, food is excellant as well so no need to go anywhere else for breakfast, hope to visit again next year, if you do decide to visit please tell rachel and jason, jim and darren send their love and hope to see them next year
Great but I think we were lucky!
We stayed in Balcon Del Mar for one week in July - I had read every review on this page before I booked it so I was aware of some of the problems that the hotel were having - ie cats and the hilly walk.
I was on hokdays with my mother. Firstly the hill everyone talks about is not that bad its about 15/20mins to the beach - there are short cuts you can take. It is not that steep so no need for hiking boots like some people have implied. We didnt mind the walk a bit - it was good to get the exercise!
Secondly the cats were fine - personally I dont like them but there was only one or two so its really not a big deal!.
The swimming pool was lovely while we were there with enough deck chairs if you were up bout 10/11.
The receptionist was not very nice at all to us but we didnt have to deal with her much.
Our room and Balcony were lovely - the view was amazing and it was lovely and quiet - the kitchen and bed room were basic but we know we werent staying at the Rtiz!.
I specifically asked for a room with a balcony and sea view as I had read enough review saying they were the best room ans I must stress that if you are staying here make sure you have one of the apts down the back of the complex with a sea view - i think the rooms are the room number 25 etc. These have lovely private balcony wth a little garden its so private - we had our own perfect Oasis - 2 loungers and a table and chairs for eating outside - it was heaven.
For our last day as our flight was not leaving until late we asked could we keep on the room til late (cost 25euro ) we were told no problem and asked to pay in the morning . In the morning we were told the room had been pre booked so we would have to move our bags out . This is where it got bad we were told we could leave our bags behind reception but we wanted to use a shower before we got on the plane so we were told we could have a spare room but we had to leave the key at reception incase any other guests wanted to have showers in there also -- we were not happy with this as anyone could then access our room and bags - eventually after a lot of hassle we moved our bags to another room (number 5) and were allowed to keep the key - we were happy with that but a bit inconvienced as we had to move all our bags. All was fine and we spent or last day at the beach and bough some perfume in the shops. when we got back to the room my mother went to the shower and i went to the supermarket to get some water when i got back the window beside the door had been smashed in. we though something had perhaps been thrown at it and thought nothing more of it as we were runshing for our bus to the airport - however it turned out someone must have entered the apt while my mother was in the shower and stolen the bag of shopping we had done - perfume and aftershave and moisturuser were taken - it really upset us.
Other then our last day the apts were brilliant we were so happy with our choice but the rooms at entrance are to be seriously the room we were moved to was smelly and dark with no private balcony and was very noisy. Demand one of the bigger rooms at the back of the complex with a sea view - you wont regret it - look after your belongings and be safe
Worst Holiday Ever
Hi, my self and my fiancée have just returned from 10 unforgettable days at balcon del mar. I’m afraid to say they were unforgettable because it was a complete nightmare! Where to start, well the location of the apartments is awful, at the top of a steep hill, which in 25c heat is horrible. it takes about 20~30 minutes to walk down to the main strip and beach (even longer if you can’t find the short cut) if you walk the long way round you find yourself walking over a building site, not easy for families with push chairs, small children or wheel chairs! Once you have finally made it to the “main strip” all you get is 1 road, and that’s it! The beach on one side and the shops/restaurants on the other. the beach is ok i suppose, it’s just sand and water, the 1st 20 meters of the beach is very pebbly and sharp, so be careful! Now the shops are not great, just the usual lucky lucky men standing outside trying to sell you a playstation 2. It is just shop after shop of this for a good ½ mile!
there is a decent choice of restaurants, but be cautious, all waiters and staff are very rude, customer service is something they do not know, there is no friendly banter, just a menu thrown in you’re face then they disappear again, we tried 15+ different restaurants and I’m sorry to say they were all a let down. The best food and service we had all holiday was at McDonalds. (I would recommend a trip there)
the situation of the apartments is terrible, after the 30 minute walk to the main road you have to find a place to eat or drink , but cannot use any toilets anywhere without buying, so parents beware. so after you have walked a good 45 minutes, eaten and drank until you are full, it is a 45 minute walk back home, again not conveint for children, elderly, and anybody who forgets about “the hill”!!
the pool was closed when we arrived, which we were not told by our tour operator or reception, the pool bar owners said it would be open again in 7 days, well after 10 days is was in a worse state than when we arrived, the 2nd pool is more like a blue pond, it is tiny and freezing, there is only room for about 10 loungers round the pool, but there are 80 apartments, so if you want to lie by a pool that is cold, half in the shade and has constant wind around it, get there early in the morning to save a lounger.
As for the apartments themselves, they are very basic, so basic in fact you begin to wonder how it got a 3 star rating. When we got our 1st apartment (yes I said 1st) it was a nightmare, absolutely awful, the furniture was broken and all seat covers were ripped, on both chairs and the sofa. the door to the balcony was in tatters, there were gaping holes all over it, the wood was rotting and broken on the door, window frames and sill, so there was a constant cold breeze, freeing in the mornings, but no a/c in the room, so put up with it and wear a jacket! As they are self catering apartments you should be able to cook a meal if you wish, but how can we cook a meal with a 2 ring hob, 1 saucepan, a kettle that stops working when the water is warm at best, and a 2 slice toaster. So we couldn’t actually cook anything worth eating, not that we could eat it anyway because we only had 1 fork!
the “cable TV” all brochures advertise is rubbish, 20 channels on the TV, the only English channels are “true movies” and “eurosport” so if you like watching either of those, make sure you have a supply of Euro coins as you have to pay to watch!
The bed sheets are old and tatty wool covers, they are ripped and have holes in, so on a cold night, which there are you are freezing all night. On the 1st night we both wanted a shower, only to discover that we got 1 minute of warm water then ice cold, we complained to the reception staff, and they said it would be sorted. On the 2nd day we still had cold water, so another trip to reception, they sent up just a staff member that had no idea what to do, so another cold shower that day. We asked if we could change rooms to save the hassle, but they said no other rooms were available for us, with a balcony and sea view that we already had, the only room they had empty was a double, this room was awaiting guests the next morning, so we couldn’t move. on the 3rd day they sent up a maintenance man who fiddled with the boiler and told us in 1 hour we would have hot water, after 4 hours it was still cold, at this point we were told the maintenance man had gone home, and lived too far away to come back that day, so we were given a key to another room to use that shower. they finally fitted 2 new boilers for our room but we still had no hot water, 1 person could possibly manage a 2 minute shower, but that’s it. The reception staff we saw (2 people in total) were incredibly rude to us and were trying to make it our fault that we had no hot water, we didn’t gat an apology at all. The next day we were very rudely told that we were not allowed to have the key for 2 rooms, so we had to change to a different room before 10 am the next day, bear in mind we were not told this until 20:30 that night. And what room did we get; the double room they told us had guests arriving. So these other guests’ obvious ally never turned up!! Once we got in the new other room, it was in a worse state than the previous, the main windows overlooking the street were broken, they didn’t lock at all and were not even on properly, so on 1 side we had an inch gap, so this apartment was also freezing.
You get no cleaning products in the apartments so cannot clean up after yourself, do washing up or at least make it livable. Underneath the kitchen counter was thick with dust, and food swept under there, the cleaner never once cleaned properly. The problems were endless.
In short, the apartments are dirty and old, under equipped and broken appliances, you are lucky if you get hot water. You need to be fit and healthy to get up the hill every day, or have enough money to get a taxi. The reception staff are rude ignorant and arrogant, your problems do not get sorted at all. They are not suitable for the elderly or families, and any couple wanting a relaxing holiday, please please steer well clear from balcon del mar. Save you’re money or go else where. You will just be as disappointed as we were
wow what a holiday!!
these apartments offered fantastic value for money and amazing views.
the room was comfortable and clean, it looked over the volcanoes which was really nice. there were steps up to the top floor, so this may have caused problems for some people. the kitchen had a toaster, kettle and 2 ring hob.
the apartments are on a hill, but there was a bus stop right outside, as well as a taxi rank just up this road. so for people that don't want to walk up or down the hill there are alternatives. the bus was only 1 euro each to the bottom/top of the hill, and a tax 2-3 euros.
there was a supermarket, Chinese, and lots of bars and restaurants within a short distance away from the hotel.
it was possible to book excursions at reception, and a bus came in the morning (or whatever time booked) to pick us up outside the hotel.
the taxi fare from the airport was just less then 14 euros.
all in all, these apartments are highly recommended
