The hoopoe bird.
We saw hoopoe birds for the first time on our fence at the los Naranjos Apartments. We watched the feathers on the top of the hoopoe's head go back in a characteristic fan and loved watching them from our balcony.

Hi, Two senior citizens visiting for one week in Teguise in December. Can't be bothered to Google. Will I be able to hire a car for three days when I get there ? Will the company deliver car to my hotel ( Barcelo Lanzarote ). Would be great if someone could list one or two places to visit by car.
I hired a car in Lanzarote and was also in Teguise, you will probably find a car to hire within 200m where you are staying.
I would book the car in advance just for peace of mind. We don't have crystal balls so no one can assure you can really find the kind of car you want (or any available car at all) once you're there, besides it will be probably more expensive. When are you traveling in December? First weekend of December is a long weekend in Spain and it will be kind of peak season, so it's around Christmas, and most of the month will be quite busy.
When in the Canaries I usually rent with a local company cicar.com, but some times with others in case I find a better offer (I'm not "bothered to Google", I actually enjoy it ;)
By the way, you are not staying in Teguise (lovely old capital of Lanzarote, inland) but in Costa Teguise (a new development area)
You can easily see all the island a few times if you stay for a week. Of course should not miss Timanfaya (you will have to leave the car and take the bus to see the natural protected area, it's well worth it). La Geria and its vineyards. The house of Cesar Manrique. The beach of "El charco de los Clicos"... etc
Hello,
When I was in Lanzarote a few years ago we also rented a car. I don't know the company anymore, but there are many companies that rent cars.
On my Lanzarote page you'll find the places we visited by car in the tip section (things to do). My off-the-beaten-path tips describe three hikes that you could do (depending on how "senior" you feel ;-)
Take enough water with you!
Especially the "short hike to two volcanoes" made a big impression on me.
The hike "Camino de las Vueltas: Hike to a deserted beach" can be combined with a car-trip along several sights, described in the tip.
Have fun, I had a reaaally good time in Lanzarote!

Ronmiel is the local liquer. It is basically rum mixed with honey. It is very tasty and you will most likely be given a glass on the house when you pay for your meal. I always liked the glass of Ronmiel after a meal.
You will not see too much wildlife in Lanzarote mainly due to the harsh enviroment. But some species are found here that are really interesting. There are quite a variety of birds to be found on the island including raptors, however I never got the chance to spot any eagles but I did get to see a few Hoopoe which are very colourful. Here is a link to an interesting site for you bird watchers

The tropical park is located in the north of the island, near the Mirador del Rio. It is an interesting place for a visit, especially if the weather is cloudy or you cannot possibly sit for another minute in the sun.
Half of the park is devoted to caged tropical birds, and some of them are very poorly kept and displayed in old and worn cages. The area called the 'breeding station' I found disturbing - with dirty old cages with very depressed birds. They had no natural features to give them a good lifestyle, but at least they looked well fed.
On the other hand, the other part of the park was very different. An enormous area was developed in an attempt to give the birdlife as much of a natural environment as was possible. Visitors are allowed into this area with a controlled entry and exit system. Inside there were trees and water features and the birds were flying overhead and nesting. They seemed very happy. It is worth a visit. I do hope the company are slowly developing the whole site to provide a quality natural environment.
There are some animals also, monkeys and meerkats.
There is a cafe on site. And there is a parrot show twice a day, 11am and 3pm which was funny and entertaining, if you dont mind seeing beautiful and intelligent birds pulling up national flags, roller skating and riding on a cycle!
Canarian Wresling is a very old sport practised throughout the canary isles. No WWF here ! just plain skill and strength.
