Puerto Del Carmen: Lively?

by firemanphil

I'm thinking of staying in Puerto del Carmen over the Christmas period, but a friend has heard that the town is not what is was a few years ago and thinks it will be very quiet at night, with not many people out and a lot of places closed. We are 4 middle aged guys who aren't clubbers but like to travel between good and busy pubs and bars.
I visited there 13 years ago in 96 and quite liked it then, so can anyone tell me if it has changed a lot.

Hello,
Having spent last Christmas and New Year in Puerto Del Carmen I can tell you that it was just what you are looking for!
We went as a family so like you wasn't into clubbing but found the town to be very busy with every place that we saw open. I have been to Lanzarote many times and never found it quiet.

Hope you have got this post in time and enjoy your stay in Lanzarote.

Travel Tips for Isla de Lanzarote

Weather and Climate

by teguise

Timanfaya Volcano Park It´s not always obvious when the best time of year to visit Lanzarote is. I´ve found a website here Lanzarote Guidebook
that gives not only up to date weather readings but also in-depth climate information. So other travelers might find it useful when planning their trip.

Coffee

by timtregenza

It is not that easy to find a decent cup of coffee on the Island. Certainly the many bars for foreigners do not deliver. I would recommned heading into a local's bar (can be found in Arrecife) and trying your luck there.

[PAPAS ARRUGADAS - simple but yummy]

by pikuu

I ate Papas Arrugadas in several places: in hotel, luxury restaurants, tourist tapas bars and of course in the local "native" bars. Although most of them served good dish the best was in the small bar located in Tinajo (central Lanza part). Unfortunately I don't remember its name but this place is situated between centre of Tinajo and Mancha Blanca village exactly opposite of the hill called Montana Tinache.

Simply Papas Arrugadas are small potatoes boiled in water with terrible quantity of sea salt. In the Net you can find many recipes but preparing this dish you have to remember: 1/. potatoes must be small; 2/. boil them with the skins; 3/. do not make any holes in the skins (salted water can't go directly inside); 4/. potatoes can't be too soft after boiling - check them but remeber point 3, 5/. serve them with mojo sauces: green (with quite large addition of coriander herb) or red (with spicy red pepper).

Bon appétit :)

Cesar Manrique

Lanzarote's famous architect/ artist. His influence on the development of Lanzarote has had a lasting impact. Without him, Lanzarote would probably look like all the other high rise holiday resorts. As it is, most of rural Lanzarote contains white washed, low structured houses with strict building controls.

Look for his unusual mobile constructions seen around the island, mostly built on roundabouts near the main roads. Sadly he died when he was hit by a car in 1992 and is buried in Haria.

His bizzare house which he constructed from a series of volcanic bubbles in now open to the public, it is located a short distance from the town of Tahiche, buses run there everyday from Arrecife. It also contains some of his artwork, as well as paintings by his contempories, Picasso and Matisse.

Follow signposts from Arrecife to San Bartolome and look out for a sign pointing to FUNDACION CESAR MANRIQUE at Tahiche.

[HONEY RUM is in real only sweet liqueur]

by pikuu

I like honey and I like very very much rum. Can you imagine how I was content reading (before the travel) that one of Canarias strong points is local ron miel (Honey rum). This product is made on Gran Canaria and it isn't specific thing for Lanzarote.

I bought quite a large bottle, found proper place with mountain view and I started to taste it. Sorry! This drink is a sweet liqueur with only small similarity to the authentic Carribean products. Almost no fantastic rum aroma, no rum taste. Even lovely sunset didn't change my opinion :(

I have to admit that the manufacturer labeled bottle with the info that this is a liqueur contains about 20% alcohol. SO, if you like sweet drinks without distinct taste........
