Gran Canaria, or Tenerife South? Which airport?

by song99

I have to choose the arrival airport (Tenerife South, or Gran Canaria), the period is just before Xmas, around Dec 13, my question is which airport should I choose, I know Tenerife South is where all the resort tourists arrive, and perhaps it's a quieter option to land in Gran Canaria, but the nice natural places to visit are on Tenerife, i will visit all the islands, but which to arrive first? It is 60km distance between Tenerife South airport, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife the main town, however Gran Canaria's airport is closer to the main town of Las Palmas, only 25km.

Las Palmas on Gran Canaria is a really nice town in my opinion while most resort towns on Gran Canaria are very tacky if you ask me.
The central part of Gran Canaria is quite nice though.

Tenerife south is not very nice if you ask me, but it does carry the advantage that you can take the ferry to La Gomera from there and that is a very nice island.

I agree with Claus Las Palmas is a civilised city with lots of culture. It too is very popular with northern Europeans and has a good number of ex-pat residents. So the airport is likely to be receiving lots of visitors around 13 Dec.

I do not like the south resorts on Tenerife at all - just not my scene. But the Ferry is convenient (have you checked winter sailing times btw?)
There is also a good bus service from near the airport up to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. We drove along the coast road, lovely drive and a much shorter distance than we thought - it only took us a little more than an hour. about 36 miles.

Where can i find the online timetable of winter ferries (between all islands/all boats).

This is probably the most comprehensive -

Tenerife-La Gomera is operated by the Fred Olsen Company but I do not have the web site to hand. Should be easy to find with Google though.

Above the clouds

by agarcia

A thick layer of clouds cover the feet of El Teide most days of the year, although the clouds rarely reach the top of the mountain. That creates some exceptional conditions for astronomic observations, and I'm sure the guys who placed a couple of top class observatories there where fully aware of that fact. It also creates the ideal location to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets I've ever seen. It's something difficult to describe with words, or even with pictures. As the Sun goes down, the layer of clouds turns slowly into an intense yellow and orange tone, while the siluete of the mountain remains like a mysterious pyramid, placed in the middle of nowhere. An absolutely breathtaking image.

the glorious sunsets...sighhhh...

Being able to walk out onto the pool and patio area behind our hotel room along PLAYA DE LAS AMERICAS and enjoy this kind of natural beauty, these are definitely in my Happy Memories column. We actually saw the firey sun move as it slipped below the horizon. Or was that the earth and ocean doing the moving? Science. Who can tell. Just enjoy. ;-}

Tourist Office

by ncfg

In Puerto de la Cruz the Tourist Office is located in Plaza de Europa, nearby the cost sea, in a beautiful building.
I think it is one of the first places to visit; there you can inform yourself about what to visit. Don't forget, Tenerife is not only beautiful beaches; it has other things to see and to enjoy.

Puffins from Iceland

by easyoar

There are quite a few Puffins in Loro Parque. They are all relatively young at the time of writing (around two years or so old). They therefore don't have their beaks in full colour yet as might be expected for Puffins. This won't happen until they are about 4 years old, when their beaks will become much redder. Apparently before the word Puffin was used to name these birds, they were reffered to as Swimming Parrots!

The Puffins here all come from Iceland (they arrived when they were about 2 weeks old). I was pleased to see them, because although I have been to Iceland, and went looking for Puffins, I didn't actually see any there, so it was nice to see these in Tenerife, even if they aren't fully mature yet.

The Puffins are kept in the Penguin House, and you can get very close to them. This picture was taken through the glass wall that is in front of their area.
