Barranco de Masca

by hillelarkin

I will visit tenerife island next month. I was thinking to make the BARRANCO de MASCA treck from Masca to the sea and have some questions:
1) Is it suitable for quite fit, 63 old couple? (I assume it downhill..)
2) How do I get back to Masca (I will leave my car there)?
3) How long it takes (I have to get to Puerto de Santiago the same for overnight)?
4) Should/ Can I combine the treck with additional trip when down on the beach (Is there a boat trip I can take from there, say to see the Los Gigantes)?

Thanks a lot

Hi, you can leave the car at the small village of Masca. It's a nice walk, and if you're fit, you should be able to do it. The problem is, it's indeed down hill, but if you go on your own you have to walk back as well! It's a 6 hours walk, you have to start early in the morning if you want to spend some time on the beach. Don't forget to take enough water and food, there's only a bar/restaurant at the starting point. If you would like to combine the walk with a boat trip it's better to go on an organised trip. If you go with an excursion, you will be picked up with a coach or minibus, you have a guide who explains you everything about plants etc. and then a boat picks you up on the beach and brings you to Los Gigantes, where a coach/minibus waits again for you and brings you back to where you have been picked up.

I did the trip (as a 22 year old) in 3 hours and arranged with one of the whale watching boats in Los Gigantes to pick me up. The walk was very hot (mid summer) but definitely worth it. The whale watching boats always anchor at Masca bay and then drive back to Los Gigantes by the big cliffs. All in all, you should allow about 4,5 hours for the whole thing.

Travel Tips for Isla de Tenerife

Lovely Beach Los Cristianos

by top_vapour

Ideal beach if you have small children or if you don't like big waves like me. Kept clean and sometimes is host to volleyball practice and competitions. Close to restaurants and harbour. Has a small play area but is still nice Everything... i miss everything!

The Orchid and Botanic Gardens in Puerto

by wroclawiak

If you want to visit the LORO PARQUE visit it first and then consider visiting the Orchid Garden and the Botanic Garden in Puerto.
In the Loro Parque you will find a beautiful Orchid House and most of endemic and imported plants too. You can save up about 8 Euros.

Black sand

by Muya

Some people don’t like it because you can get quite dirty with the sand, but to me it represents the originality of Tenerife. The island is of volcanic origin, so white sand beaches is not really what you expect to find there. There are some, of course, that have been fitted out for tourists. A nice one, and probably the best of the island is Playa de Las Teresitas, next to Santa Cruz.
On this picture, little Mahé stands on a stone of the beach in Fanabe.

The Black Jaguar

by easyoar

This black female Jaguar lives with her normally spotted mate in an area of Loro Parque that has been set up to look like a volcanic crater.

Whilst the area had been well set up, I did fel that there were the animals in Loro Parque that look a bit unhappy. They semed to spend most of their time, just pacing up and down in front of the glass.

I'm not actually too sure how rare black Jaguars are (I have never seen one before), and as with the white tiger that lives with a normally striped mate, I am not sure what colour (or 'color' if you live in the US) young these pairs will produce.

Watch out for that Croc...

by easyoar

Crocodiles are considered to be the perfect animal. They are unchanged genetically since the time of the dinosaurs. They may be stupid (they have tiny brains and no logic), but what they do they do to perfection, and that is killing other animals in water.

Due to the ridges on their backs, the water just glides throuhg leaving hardly a ripple as they swim towards their prey. When they snap their jaws closed, it is with so much power that they shatter the strongest bone, and then they drag their prey under the water until it stops struggling, and then consume it.

The crocs in Loro Parque are behind a glass fronted wall so you can get right up next to them. One I saw had small fishes swimming into his mouth and eating the food in his teeth. The crocodile ignored them and let them clean him up.
