Advice on which part of coast to stay...

by bagehot

Hello all,

Will take a 4-day break in Tenerife in mid-June. Having gone through some info. about the island I still have a few doubts on where to stay.

I would prefer to be near sand beaches and preferably avoid the crowds. Is there any chance that the Southwestern part of the island will be somewhat "quieter" in June ? I assume not, but...

It would seem that the northern part fits the requirement better, but I'm struggling a bit to find competitive accomodation by the sea in that part of the coast.

Would appreciate your thought on which part of the territory best suits a short beach-looking break.

Maybe if you go as far as Playa Callao (Southern end of Los Cristianos beyond Arona Gran Hotel), near Montaña de Guaza. See
I am not sure they will be much quieter in the North, but I thought the nicest beach I saw in Tenerife was Playa de las Teresitas near San Andres, north of Santa Cruz (although it was quite busy..).
You could take a look at these:

Don't take Playa de las Terresitas !!!! They are doing big transformation works for the moment and on top you don't have hotels nearby . This beach has been made for the homelanders of Santa Cruz.
I should take Los Cristianos, Gran Arona, Princessa Dacil, or even Oasis Moreque. Los Cristianos is indeed a holyday place but a lot quiter than Playa de las Americas , Fanabay, Costa Adeje etc...
In Cristianos the roads are nearly flat , that is the only place on Tenerife. All the other places have quit a lot of differences in level from the sea to the hotels.
If you should need more info you can contact me in private, I'm on Tenerife 4 or 5 months a year and this since more than 20 years.

Travel Tips for Isla de Tenerife

Take secondary roads

by Muya

Instead of riding on the highway, take secondary roads, it is much more pleasant to enjoy the landscapes... You’ll ride through lovely villages not mentionned in your travel guides... It takes a bit more time, because roads are quite winding, but you’re on holidays right ? And you always can find the highway again as the roads are often parallel to it. Highway signs are regularly visible along the road. Riding on side roads to Guïmar, we passed next to this old women working in her garden. She didn't want me to take a picture of her face, which she told me she found too old... But she was such a cute grandma !

Mount Teide

by Helga67

Mount Teide is the highest mountain in Spain and measures 3718 metres and it lies into one of the world's largest volcanic craters. It's a volcano into a volcano.
It is situated in the centre of the island, and is known as the "Jewel in the Canarian crown".

I enjoyed my trip to this volcano very much. It's a great experience, driving through bizarre landscapes of twisted lava-rock and pine forests. Don't miss it.

Amazing flora

by Helga67

What I remember best about the island, was the changing flora. It was just amazing driving from the beach to the centre of the island, where you will find Pico del Teide.

It all starts very green with lots of cacti. When you reach the clouds, the vegetation is kind of spooky, and above the clouds (above 2000m) the pine trees disappear and the landscape becomes volcanic with colours of black, green, ochre and yellow.

The water

by ncfg

I almost forgot to say to you that the water in those beaches is worm and beautiful.
The most tourists’ beaches are located in the south and it’s where holidaymakers crowd onto beaches, such as Playa de Las Américas and Los Cristianos.

Red Admiral Butterflies

by easyoar

Although Red Admiral butterflies also live in England, these ones seemed a bit bigger. You als certainly wouldn't see them over Christmas time! If you enlarge the picture, you can see the butterflies tongue going into the flower to drink the nectar.

This one was flying around the gardens in the Piramides de Guimar and I could see quite a few people paying more attention to the gardens here than to the Pyramids.

I'm not sure what the purple flowers were, but they were attracting a ot of attention from all sorts of different butterflies.
