stay in LP or move around?

by piglet44

We are a couple aged 50,60 and would like to take a short break in Gran Canaria in December. Not into partying or beaches, more scenery and history.Would like to ask whether it would be better to stay in Las Palmas (the city) and take day trips out to different parts of the island or whether it would be better to move from place to place. How easy would it be to get accomodation- I mean is booking ahead essential or can we wing it?

Also is the best way to go to hire a car or can one make do with public transport?

We would have around 5-6 days in all.

Stay in one place, hire a car to get around.
That way you don't have to lug all of your luggage from place to place.

Newly discovered problem- our flight arrives in Las Palmas at 1am. Do you think we will be able to get a car at that time? and if not what means of transportation will be available from the airport?
thanks

You probably won't be able to hire a car at that time, get a taxi to your hotel and then hire your car in the morning.

Travel Tips for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Santa Ana Cathedral

by C.GOROSTIAGA

Work on the Santa Ana Cathedral began at the start of the 16th century in the purest Gothic style. However, its construction was repeatedly interrupted and was not finished until practically four centuries later, though by then neoclassical influences had left their mark on the new facades. In the different Cathedral chapels important works of art are kept, including various pieces by the religious sculptor José Luján Pérez. Located in the southern wing of the cathedral is the Diocesan Museum which houses numerous highly valuable works from the last four centuries.

Surfing

by Birsen

The surf conditions that exist in certain parts of the coast of Gran Canaria have made it possible to develop various forms of water sports that are based on the exploitation of this phenomenon, the most notable being windsurfing, surfing and bodyboarding, the latter being better known as "boogie" on the island.

Tortilla sandwich

by Birsen about La Garriga

La Garriga is a delicatessen shop who makes wonderful tortilla sandwiches and many other styles as well . They have different style and a secret recipe for this tortilla sandwich it is so smooth and surprisingly not made from potatoe. The hours are really weird they open after 5 pm. There are few stores in the city one in Mesa y Lopez area, another is very closed to Parque San Telmo, another one closed to Las Arenas Shopping center in Las Canteras area. Tortilla de la Garriga

MUSEO CANARIO

by Maria_75

Here you will find the biggest and most important collection of things from the guanches. They have different kinds of tools, ceramics, pintaderas (for making symbols/patterns) and statues.

You can see maps and pictures that were drawn when the spanish first arrived on the islands. And paintings of how they think the guanches lived and looked like. You can also see small scale models of the guanche buildings and villages.

There is an impressive collection of skeletons and craniums, and even mumies that the guanches made. You can still see the hair and nails on the mumies.

The museum is not so big, and it's located in the Vegueta district where there are plenty of old buildings and other museums. You can easily check out this museum and many of the other things around here in one day.

Gabinete Literario

by C.GOROSTIAGA

Moving now towards the southern tip of the city, arts lovers in particular should not miss the opportunity to visit the Benito Pérez Galdós House Museum, one of the most famous names in Spanish literature, and the Gabinete Literario (see photo), a cultural club formed in the middle of the last century through whose doors passed all the leading names of the time and whose building has been declared a Monument of Historical Interest.
