More about Dunas Mirador Hotel

Bad food

by TripAdvisor Member NSandion

After reading the reviews on trip advisor we decided to take a chance and booked a weeks half board accommodation at the Dunas Mirador. On arrival the hotel seemed quite busy, reception seemed to be a little disorganised but once we were seen check in was over within a matter of minutes.
Our room was clean and comfortable, but our balcony was facing a dual carriageway. We asked if it was possible to be moved which was fine and we were moved to a pool facing room the next day (much nicer).

There were two main downfalls with this hotel- food and entertainment.

The other reviews described the food as bad but I have to say I didnt think it would be as bad as it was. The restaurant can only be described as a limited and disorganised canteen. Hygiene was certainly not one of their top priorities. The selection was poor, one night the hot food selection consisted of Greasy Hake Fingers, over cooked brussel sprouts, Cannelloni and chips and that was it!!!!!! I felt sorry for the All Inclusive guests. Breakfast was no better but at least you can get away with eating bread- the water machines weren't working and the selection of juices and hot drinks were terrible. We forced ourselves to eat dinner there for 2 nights of our stay and that was hard. Also, we could not purchase lunch or snacks at the poolbar but would have had to upgrade to All Inclusive which didn't make sense as the menu was so limited. It was nicer and cheaper to eat out.

Entertainment was available but not interesting- the animation team were unenthusiastic and boring. Unfortunately, they didn't really know how to get people interested. We heard All Inclusive guests complaining about the pool bar not serving drinks after 2230 and that they had to sit outside as that was the only place with a bit of atmosphere.

This hotel was basic but nice as we just wanted to relax. The pool areas were clean and the pools fairly big, the large main pool was freezing but quite nice after laying in the sun for 20 mins.
We did not expect the weather to be as nice as it was and we enjoyed 25C heat with lots of sunshine without a cloud in the sky all week.

Spent 2 weeks chilling out on this all inclusive holiday. Read a lot of reviews before going and now agree with most said. At the end of the holiday I filled in the hotel questionaire and couldn't give it poor marks in any respect but nor could I highly praise it either.

The food was ok, drinks were a mixed bag but were satisfactory.
All inclusive finishes at 10.30 and drinks thereafter are expensive. The local supermarket and newsagents are close and well priced so the odd bottle on the balcony went down well.

We stayed in block D and it was reasonably quiet but the opposite block to us was close to a main road!

The staff were generally good but this is a busy hotel and I suppose it's hard to smile all day. If you go say hello to Miguel at the bar for us, that is if you get the chance, he was without doubt the most obnoxious and rude member of staff we met- maybe he jjust doesn't like the british !

Swimming pools are well kept and pleasing to the eye, but only the smaller one is heated and the larger , due to the cold, not realy used. Getting a sun bed was no trouble but if you want one next to the pool (we have small children who we wished to keep an eye on ) then be prepared to compete with the Germans.

The hotel guests were from everywhere and although there were a lot of Germans and Spanish, there were a also quite a few Brits, Dutch and Belgiums - no problems and nice to mix with other nationalities. However, i don't think the Germans have quite mastered the technique of queueing !

The entertainment was ok for the kids, my children particularly enjoyed the evening disco 8.30 to 9.30. The adult entertainment was ok around the pool and the entertainment staff are good fun, but they unfortunately provided the evening entertainment which was energetic but poor - I would suggest you don't bother unless brain dead.

The hotel is approx 2 miles from the beach, we got taxis at 3 euros, why bother with buses. Enjoyed strolls along the promenade but to be frank the weather was so good we spent most of our time around the swimming pool.

We did however, manage to get to Aqualand - a little expensive ( 22 euros adult and approx 16 euros for kids) but great fun. We also went to Holiday World one evening- quite pleasant. Both within Maspalomas.
Have fun.

4 star pool, 2 star food

Stayed here 16 - 23 April 07, all inc.
I pretty much echo the majority of the other reviews.
The hotel is clean, tidy, pool area is 4 star, plenty of (new) sunbeds, no reserving taking place.
Staff are ok, speak English (and german, dutch etc) and are helpful.
Rooms are slightly larger than average (I can only comment on block A)
The hotel is situated just a bit too far to walk into town, only a couple of shops/bars in the immediate area.
The food on offer, in my opinion, is below average for this standard of hotel.
I say this as the 'hot' selection of breakfast is too cold, and the Lunch and Dinner selection is just too repetitive. 3 types of fish for lunch, 3 types of fish for dinner on the same day, that sort of thing.
After breakfast ends at 10.30, there's no food or snacks available until 12.30 (no you can't even buy some).
Don't get me wrong, you won't starve, but it *could* be better, and is better at similar standard hotels that I've stayed at.
There is a snack bar next to the pool bar open 12.30 - 15.30, serving burgers, hot dogs, toasties, chips etc, so the kids will be happy enough... done me as well some days!
The other slightly odd thing is the drinks set up for all inc.
I don't think i've stayed at any other all inc where drinks cease at 22.30, and you can only get them from one bar (pool bar) and can't take them in with you to the disco bar.
Still, just get 3 or 4 before they close and carry on until whenever!
Bar remains open for buying drinks until silly o'clock it appears.

I would have added more photo's, but the size limit is against me.

a lot to be learnt about all inclusive

We have just returned from a fortnights holiday at this hotel(myself ,my husband and two 16 year old teenagers) Ihad read the mixed reviews before going but decided to take a chance. The hotel is set out in blocks of rooms around a central pool. I would not recommend this hotel to disabled or people with walking difficulties as there are too many steps, however there were disabled people in wheelchairs and they seemed to manage?
We did get one of the rooms overlooking a busy dual carriageway but we do not spend much time in the rooms so this did not prove a major problem to us. The only negative here was the noise when you had to open the balcony doors at night as the hotel has no air conditioning. To avoid this do not have rooms in Block C. and hire a fan from reception.
I found the staff helpful and anything requested was dealt with efficiently.
The hotel is on a steep hill a 20 minute walk or a 3 euro taxi ride to maspalomas, there are a very small amount of shops and a supermarket around the corner from the hotel but night life here is limited. We have been to many all inclusive hotels and this hotel has a lot to learn. There are too many rules regarding where you are allowed to drink, not everyone wants to sit outside every night ,it would have been nice to sit in one of the other bars and lounges with our all inclusive drinks. You were allowed to drink in the disco until 10.30 but the mini disco went on here till this time and the children were then on hand to witness some very adult entertainment.
All inclusive drinks ended dead on 10,30 and then you had to purchase your drinks, the pool bar staff work extremely hard and are friendly, however the snack bar is situated next to the bar limited opening times again and it can get difficult to get a seat as eveyone is sent here and the rest of the hotel is empty???
Now to the food a week would be okay a fortnight too long as it was very repetetive. There was sirloin steaks, pork roasts, and plenty of fish dishes with salads and vegetables but it became bland. Desserts were poor although there were cakes, ice cream, and fruit but again it was repeated. There was always plenty of food and plates but beware do not leave your food unattended as it will be cleared away in an instant. We experienced extremely hot weather and on the last two days were subjected to a scirocco wind i can only liken it to being in a fan oven, this heat brought out the cockroaches in the pool bar area and we did see two in the restaurant., but the hotel was clean and maidservice was very good. All in all i think you get what you pay for and although the pool was lovely and the hotel well kept they need to take some tips from the Taurito Princess Hotel in playa taurito where we went last year ,a fantastic 4star hotel and the extra star makes all the difference.Although we enjkoyed our holiday and it is what you make it I would not go to this hotel again unless they relaxed their all inclusive rules and improved their choice of food. I hope this helps?

OMG........stay away!!!! U have been warned.....

Well just got back from a weeks hols to this hotel and i can say im totally not impressed! i must say incase you think i am a snob, im common as common can be :o) We booked fairly last minute and DID NOTget a discount paid £900 for 2 of us all inclusive so expected a reasonable holiday for what we paid....Boy were we upset. After booking decided to check out the reviews and thought....no surely cant be that bad, looks lovely....some people there is no pleasing ;o(....so ignored most of the reviews and went there with an open mind!

Negatives: All inc does not mean AI! The Hotel was at full capacity and still they did not open the whole of the restaurant, only opened sections which was a complete pain as had to wait for tables AFTER you had got your GRUEL (see below) so by the time you actually got a table your food was cold and heaven forbid if ya left that table unattended for a mere second to get a drink etc your table would be gone, even happened when i left my drink and bag on a table....yeah rudeness!!!
The food was just unbearable, i do not have high expectations but come on a bit of nice grub would have been a god send! Their beef is actually just fat on a bone cooked rare chicken and pork is no better, if you like salad then you are well catered for because that is basically the whole of it!! It is repaeated day after day no variety. Dessert was good, restaurant staff are very rude UNLESS you are German or French (did not meet one single other English person all week!) pool food is ok. Staff here are just overworked, underpaid. The maid is absolutly lovely, very polite. Stop serving drinks at 10.30pm then you have to buy, bit of a joke really id say. can only get drinks from pool bar all day, always a que. The hotel is very noisy, beware you will not get a good nites sleep as doors constantly banging where they are so heavy. Was meant to be a double room but got 2 single beds so had to push together. They say ya cannot reserve sun beds but as soon as they take the rope of the pool area everyone is there like jack flash with towels putting them on bed after bed so be quick...they put them on there and some dont even return till later afternoon..again another joke...

Possitives:
Pool is great as long as you can get a sun bed you dont have to move, apart from the bed situaltion our room was ideal Block E, had pool view and was huge. The maid was lovely, very helpful. reception staff helpfull too!! can get a taxi strait away, will need lots of these as you are in middle of nowhere...

My advice is if you are going to gran canaria, go to Playa des Ingles, there is lots to do there, and will save a few bob on taxis as in one week we spemt 90 euros on taxis! bit steep!!

Happy holidays, hope you have fun, GOOD LUCK :o)

Gran Canaria

by manuela1

Hi
Can anyone give their experience/opinion about which resort is the best for 2 adults travelling to Gran Canaria with no kids? We're thinking of going beginning of March 2011, for about a week for some winter sun and we would preferably like to go self catering and not be in close proximity to holiday makers with children! We don't want a very quiet resort and we don't want anything too mad either. A few bars and restaurants with a bit of culture thrown in and a beach and spas nearby will do. Any suggestions/reviews welcome.
Thanks

A: "Taxi shouldn't cost more than 40 euros or there is a bus just outside the arrivals hall, number 66 i think. It will cost a couple of euros. (every 15 minutes)"
