Colombina Library

Vegueta is the oldest and most distinguished area of the city. Its beautiful houses are a fine example of "architectural symbiosis", colonial and local styles being merged into one. Of the wide variety of buildings which the visitor will come across in the area special attention should be given to the San Antonio Abad Chapel (15th century, rebuilt in the 17th), where Christopher Colombus prayed before he set off for America and which was moreover the original site of settlement in the city, the Casa de Colón (House of Colombus, see photo), where the Admiral stayed during his stay on the island, Santo Domingo Church (16th century) and San Francisco Church (17th century).

Cant say that I recommend this, but the children were really impressed by the sight of the sharks that the fishermen had caught. Kept them out of the sea for a few days. Hehehe.... Jaws had nothing on these pair

Open 12:00 -24:00 (Sunday closed) We ordered queso de Guia (cheese from Guia -a small town makes this cheese in the northern part of the island) and Vino tinto de la casa (red house wine)
The Cathedral - Santa Iglesia Catedral de Canarias
by Regina1965
The Santa Iglesia Catedral de Canarias - also called Cathedral Santa Ana, is a must see in Las Palmas as there is a fantastic panoramic view of the city from the Cathedral. And of course the Cathedral itself is breathtaking. It costs 1,50 euros to take the lift to the first level, then you have to walk some stairs to go to the roof.
Construction of the Cathedral began around 1500 but was stopped 70 years later due to lack of funds. As it was built over a long period its exterior is neoclassicism and its interior is late Gothic.
Opening hours are: Monday-Friday 10-17 and Saturdays 10-14.
Opposite the Cathedral is the lovely square Plaza de Santa Ana and next to the Cathedral is Casa de Colon (The house of Columbus).
Plaza de Santa Ana.
by Regina1965
Plaza de Santa Ana is a lovely square opposite The Cathedral Santa Ana right in the centre of Las Palma's old town of Vegueta. Its style is copied by squares which are all over Latin America. The square was built in the 16th century but was restored in the 19th century when number of political demonstrations where held there. It is now ideal for outside-concerts and meetings.
At the main entrance opposite The Cathedral there are several bronze statues of dogs.
