nightmare

by A TripAdvisor Member

we have returned from the barcelo jandia playa. if you want a goood holiday don,t go there. the cleanliness of the cutlery and crockery left a lot to be desired. the menu is the same every night and is lukewarm. brussels sorouts for breakfast a complete joke. service is none exisistant in this hotel, also the food hygene leaves a lot to be desired. we were served raw chicken, when i complained about it to the sub director of the hotel, he told me the standard of cooking was checked every two months. salmonella is the same in the same in any country. this was a silver wedding present ruined. the bar service is very poor. we also e-mailed the barcelo hotels, and recieved a luke warm reply, same as the food. in all this hotel is only a 3 star hiding behind a 4 star mask

not worth the 4 stars

by TripAdvisor Member hedoniste

My husband and I have been to the barcelo jandia playa for a week, after a week in tenerife in another 4 star hotel.

Our first contact with the hotel was not good, which is never a good sign. When you arrive in a hotel, you want to be impressed and feel at the first sight that the hotel will be a nice place to stay in. That's why they usually put some money and effort in a great lobby.

But we arrived at 11pm, after a short plane transfer from Tenerife and found a very noisy and busy lobby, full of guests arriving at the same time and only 2 or 3 people at the counter, completely disorganised. The noise was loud and not pleasant. there was a piano player who was also singing and it was really really terrible.

We were staying at first in a standard double room. The room was ok large, with a clean bathroom, with a tub and hairdrier
There was air conditionning and a fan at the ceiling to spread the fresh air, which is a good idea.

The balcony was very disappointing. There was absolutely no intimacy since a 1/2 meter high tiny wall was separating us from our side neighbours and more, we were facing the corridor of another building ! Imagine, you are sitting on your holiday balcony and what yo see are neighbours going in and out of their roooms.
So, after a thought, we asked to be moved in a seaview room, for the price of 6 euros per day.
We had to wait for a day because the manager was out of the hotel (?). Anyway, we were transfered to seaview room, which had the same tiny wall to separate us from the neighbours, but at least we were facing some nice view.

We understood at night only how foolish we were. The room was up the lobby and the theater and thus we heared the show and the disco sounds and beats until 1 am. It's ok, if you are going to these shows, but the animations were really boring and the disco was reserved for teenagers. (there was another disco for adults further in the hotel)

In general, the hotel was really noisy, with thin walls. For ex. we could hear the mother of a baby next door sing for her baby. (and she was not singing loud)

the swimming pools were clean but there was not enough room and we had to wait sitting several times before a matress gets free.
The beach is really beautiful, clean, large, the sea is warm and some nice waves made it fun. It cost 9 euros to get 2 matresses (not linked with the hotel)
There is a free of charge shuttle bus to the beach because the hotel is 800 meters form the beach, but it is not flat at all.

The worst part was food. We had to queue for 20 minutes to arrive to the buffet, in greasy smoke because the air cannot go out of he room and they grill for every meal.

The dining room is small, we often could not find a place to sit although were only 2. The room between table was too small, people were bumping at each other or the people sitting had to push themselves to let them pass.

Every meal was absolutely not a pleasure.
We had to eat at the pool snack for lunch and went to an outside restaurant to enjoy a bit of calm although we were on all inclusive.

The quality of the food was less than ok, it was greasy and you had the same dishes every 2 days almost. There is a "diet area" which was good but not always very fresh.

The all inclusive was nice thiugh, you could drink until 11 pm any alcohol but dont' expect a tapas or a peanut, they don't want you to be thirsty and drink more

Finally, service was ok, some people were very friendly but many seemed overwhelmed and did not speak english
I would not recommend this hotel , it's ok but it's not worth the price and the 4 stars

An excellent two weeeks!

by TripAdvisor Member leanne123

I really liked this hotel it is clean and the staff are friendly. I don't know what everyone is complaing about the walls for because they aren't that thin. you can hear the odd conversiation from next door but it is not at all that bad! The drinks are great i especially liked the cocktails especially a tequila sunrise!!! Also you have to try a barcelo cocktail as they are very nice and they get you very drunk!!

I liked the food some nights and some nights i hated it! They have pasta and bolonaise every night and chips. They will have different vegetables and then they cook different meat every night. They main meat is veal-which i am sick of!!! and chilcken, turkey and pork are the main dishes. You also have different fish every night-you should try the swordfish it is really lush!!! overall the is something to suit eveyone!! Also i would make the effot and go on for lunch as it is very nice and sometimes nicer than dinner!

Now lets talk about the HILL! It is indeed very steep and it can be a pain to walk up and down in the boiling hot heat so what we did was cut through the other hotel!!! You come out of the back of the hotel and then walk through the sister hotel which is called Barcelo jandia playa. It takes a little bit longer but you can skip the massive hill by using the lifts in the hotel and also get a cup of water from the machines! nobody knows because you have a barcelo band on like everyone else!!! We found it a big help-and you get to nose at what the other hotel is like!! lol

The pools are very nice and clean and a little bit cold but very refreshing when its hot! you cannot reserve sunbeds and when we reserved sunbeds we got our towels remeoved! So you have to get in get your breakfast and then get out and get a sunbed to lay on!

I have to say the lifts are rather dodgy so try not to use them!! we got stuck in one of them and it wasn't a pleasent experience! When we got stuck we ran the alarm button but they couldn't understand so my boyfriend had to force the doors open himself to get us out!!! We did complain but they didn't seem to care. The recpetion staff are like that-not very efficent!

There are very little brits here and mostly germans, french and ducth. You tend to get looked down upon by them and brits are very much out numbered!!

The spar down the bottom of the hill comes in very handy and it quite cheap to and if you get a chance to walk into the town it is qiute pleasant! The beach is a must it is lovely!!

I would not recommmend this hotel for older teenagers from about 16-20 as you will get bored of things to do and if you get drunk you get very very dirty looks! i would definatlty recommmend this hotel to familes, romantic couples and older couples to. It is a very pleasant and lovely hotel and i would definelty go to it again!!!

A very enjoyable holiday

by A TripAdvisor Member

I stayed in the hotel with my friend for 2 weeks 6th May- 20th May 2006, we both found the hotel & the lovely beaches a really enjoyable holiday so much so we would go back to the same Hotel for another holiday, the rooms were large,we thought the food was first class, you could have as much food as you wanted, the entertainment staff were helpful, because we were English they would go out of their way to make sure we understood in the Salsa,Bachacha and Merenga dance lessons, all in all we were very pleased with our stay.

loved the place

by TripAdvisor Member ricky13

We stayed for the first week in june and what a place, fantastic pools, excellent service
and great food. We upgraded on arrival from half board to all inclusive for 70 euros each for the week and what a good idea that was.

The location of the hotel is set back from the sea but in under 10 minutes you can be on the beach walking in the surf and what a beach, best i`ve yet been on. Just outside the hotel are a couple of nice freindly bars but walk 15 minutes and you come across restuarants bars shops, its all there.

Our opinion close enough to everything when you want it but far enough away for when you just want to sit by the pools and recharge your batteries.

great. second year running

we flew out of birmingham with no problems to arrive to perfect 27 degrees.we booked online with Mytravel(airtours) not having used the operator before found the aircraft new and more spacious than the thomas cook aircraft of the previous year.Brochure stated 1.5 hours transfer time which turned out to be 2 hours but that really is my only niggle, but the tour rep was a mature ,very knolagable happy go lucky woman that made it durable.we luckily new the hotel layuout so found our room easily but some other Brits said the reception did not show them to the rooms adequetly and at 10.30 at night a hillside hotel can be a bit tricky to suss. The hotel is totally geared for all inclusive and my advice is book half board because this year is barcelo hotels 75 anniversary and they are offering all inc. for 10 euros pp/pn and airtours was to charge £200 pw in our case(get it there) so you do the math.As i mentioned hillside setting so pack good shoes for treks to the beach and town gift shops 10-15 mins beach(downhll)15-20mins to the shops except an english stye "Spar" supermarket below the hotel.Food is well presented and varied but try to get there at 6.30-7.00 or the main walkway to the buffet gets busy.Get a spanish frase book coz they speak good english but we found you served quicker at a bar with a "poco espanjol".If you wan`t a sea veiw allways book one ,it`s worth it, rooms are well air-con`ed+ ceiling fan maid are courtious and proficient and do bother paying the 14 euros for the safe in the room ,we did and the instructions are on the safe so you can use anyway.pools excelent, plenty of loungers, you still get the early morning towel brigade(sad) Thats it really we hope this gives some good advice.`Adious Amigo`s.

Butlins in the sun

My wife and I spent a week in this hotel. It's supposed to be four star, but it is definitely not. It would be lucky to get two stars in any other country.
Some food was not fully cooked, and it is geared for Spanish, Italian and German taste. Not many British people at the hotel, in our case about a dozen.
However, the main problem is the other guests. Thousands of cockroaches. We had the unfortunate experience of going into the dining area at 5:00 am. The hotel had made arrangements for an early breakfast as we were going on a trip to Lanzarotte. Big mistake. We arrived in the dining area and I promptly fell full length on the floor. I had slipped on a pile of dead cockroaches. There were very neat piles of them, approx 12"x6"x2" high. These piles were all the way down the dining room. The cleaners were sweeping them out from below the buffet stations.
The hotel offerred to pay for a doctor and upgraded our room, but it put a damper on the holiday. The rep (Thomas Cook) was excellent. She told us that some people had found cockroaches in their food. Not a good thing for a 'four star' hotel to do. But for the rest of the holiday we examined every morsel very closely.
The glasses and cups were covered in insecticide, but still the cockroaches crawled around them with impunity. So only go here if you enjoy extra protein in your food, love the taste of insecticide and don't mind non human company for dinner. When you do go for food, it's a battle to get a table and food. the dining area is just not big enough and there is an insufficient number of staff. The other guests elbow you out of the way and load their plates with more than they can eat.
The place is built on the side of a mountain. The walk to the main road is tortuous in the heat. The coach is really a mini bus that runs on a hit and miss timetable.
The hotel has a main building and then nine concrete barracks, each containing 60+ bedrooms. The walls however, were made out of paper. You can hear every word next door. Babies crying, parents shouting etc. at all hours of the day and night. These barracks are linked by concrete pathways that vary in incline from steep to very steep. Not very good if you've done your back in slipping on a pile of dead cockroaches.
The one good point are the swimming pools. Clean and kept that way.
If you want a good holiday, value for money then do not go here. For what you get, it's daylight robbery.

Fantastic!!!!

by TripAdvisor Member SJUK

We have just arrived back from a wonderful week here and before we even set off this trip was a bit of a worry for me as it was the first time my parents had been abroad and I was dreading it after reading the reveiews posted on here, but, we were not disappointed one bit and my folks loved it.

For those who say that this is not worth the 4 stars it is acredited then you must have extremely high standards as we have stayed in some awful places claiming to be 4 stars and this was by far the best. The food was spot on, plenty of variety if you are a little adventurous with plenty of meats, fish, vegetable and salad dishes on offer. Most of them cooked infront of you so you could see how the meats were prepared etc. Breakfast was always fantastic with plenty to choose from for even the fussiest of eaters. My Mum & Dad are typical Lancastrians and tend to stick to the same foods but they absolutley loved everything they tried.

The rooms were cleaned daily and towels changed on a regular basis, (there was a little mis-hap where one of the maids took the towels but did not replace them but one call to reception and we had clean towels brought to us within half hour),air con and fans were a must in the rooms and worked a treat. We also had access to some sky TV channels - granted mainly Spanish & German but BBC News and Eurosport where on there which meant my Dad could still watch his Superbikes sunday morning and lets face it who wants to sit and watch TV when its 30 degrees outside, not me!

The pool areas were tidied each night and then throroughly cleaned each morning. The all inclusive drinks were great with all branded soft drinks and San miguel on tap and a wide variety of wines and spirits readily available. Pina Calada's were Yummy!!!

We ventured out one day to Correlejo at the north end of the Island and we were glad we chose South rather than North as it was not as nice - although the Sand Dunes up there were stunning.

Overall we had a fantastic holiday & none of us wanted to come home! We all want to book to go back next year, and I can safely say that I would recommend this to anyone!

Asked travel agent for a middle of the road winter sun holiday

by TripAdvisor Member hovercrafter

I asked the travel agent for a middle of the road winter sun holiday package. Not too expensive but still with reasonable standards and facilities. That is pretty much what we got and consider we had value for money.

Apparently all the hotels on Fuertevenura are large units, 500 beds not being uncommon. Certainly this one was huge, cascading down a hillside to the beach. The layout of the hotel with the four swimming pool complexes and eight bedroom blocks (plus the hotel itself) set at different levels meant that you never felt crowded.

However....Breakfast in the main dining room was bedlam. The first two days the service in the dining room, generally, was awful. The management crash team arrived on the third day (two suits and three under managers with walky talkies) quite entertaining to watch. More waiters and better service followed in short order....still no teaspoons though........and the tea bags fifty paces from the hot water is the stuff of holiday legend.

Food, I enjoyed it. My wife is more English in tastes (prefers meat and two veg ) so was less enthusiastic. She did remark on the good steak she had.

The beach below the hotel is a trek across a small belt of salt marsh. A quick sprint back to the hotel pool bars for more Sangria is not really practical and would involve some serious exercise.... If you plan to use the (nudist) beach go prepared for the day. Even the beach bars / cafe are situated some distance from the water on the other side of the salt marsh and coast road. Despite the beach being a good one, we elected to remain close to the (all inclusive) Sangria supply.......

A good holiday... The dining room organisation needs a major rethink and cost the rating 1 star.. shame as the food was good. If they fix that and give some thought to wind breaks around the pools during the winter season they could have scored Excellent....... given that this was an off season booking and priced to match.

Welk Canarisch eiland bij u?

by avdb1948

NATUURRIJK TENERIFE:

Dan is Gran Canaria the place to be.
